Born September 24, 1916, in Binghamton, NY, she lived in Sidney and Binghamton before moving to Syracuse in 1925. After graduating from the old Central High School, she obtained a teaching certificate from the Syracuse Normal School. Thereafter she taught in the Syracuse elementary school system before going on to Syracuse University where she met her future husband, Gustus Amrose (December 1988), a lifetime Syracuse resident, who had maintained his own law practice. Her son Dean commented that, "Even though my father won the gold medal as New York State debating champion when he was at Central High School, I don't think I ever saw him win a debate with my mother." Although following her marriage she devoted herself to raising her family of four, she never gave up her love of teaching. She stayed active at the schools as a longtime participant and leader of the Sumner school "Mother's Club". Thereafter she volunteered regularly in the Reading is Fundamental program as long as she was able. She believed any child could learn and followed the thought of Horace Mann, (educator, 1796-1859), "A teacher who is attempting to teach, without inspiring the pupil with a desire to learn, is hammering on a cold iron." In addition she supported her husband's involvement in the Eye Research Foundation of Central New York and was a longtime activist with the Syracuse League of Women Voters. She is the mother of four children, Janet, deceased 1992, and three sons who survive her, Frederick of Beverly Hills, MI, Mark of Denver, CO, Dean of Arlington, MA; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A service will be held on Sunday, February 13, 2005, at 10 am. at the Syracuse University Hillel Center, 102 Walnut Place (corner of Harrison St.), Syracuse, New York. Donations may be made to the "Syracuse School District - Reading is Fundamental", and mailed to Syracuse Schools Volunteer Office, 725 Harrison Street, Syracuse, NY 13210, attn: J. Lancaster.
