January 4, 2005 John C. Amrose, 79, the son of Matt and Grace, died unexpectedly at Community General Hospital. After graduating from Central High School and attending Syracuse University, he joined the Army and served with distinction in Japan. Upon hisreturn he and his brother Howard managed the family leather business and Botinka's Shoe Store. Most days he got in nine holes before opening at seven. After the business closed, John was able to devote more time to his first passion, golf. Dolores Gooth Amrose, his wife of 54 years, predeceased him in 2002. His memory will be cherished by his four daughters, Lynn Marie Amrose, Nancy Amrose, Jane Jackman of Syracuse, and Virginia of Denver, Colorado; his sister and brother-in-law, Gloria and Dr. William Delaney; several nieces and nephews; and all of those whom he made smile. His passing will also be mourned by the Syracuse golfing community, the Moose lodge, and his beloved companion, Dommicella Schultz. No calling hours at the request of the deceased. Mr. Benz was born in Oswego, the son of the late Russell and Katherine (Burt) Benz. He had lived in Dewitt for 40 years. Mr. Benz was a veteran of the US Army, serving in WWII. He was the husband of the late Barbara (Carroll) Benz, who died in 1995. Prior to his 1991 retirement, he was a dispatcher with the Clark Concrete Co. in Syracuse. Surviving are a daughter, Evelyn (Francis) LiVoti of Fulton; a son, William (Suzanne) Benz Jr. of East Syracuse; and three grandchildren, Bridget Benz, Tessa LiVoti, and Marisa LiVoti. "Beth" Clapp, 89, formerly of Teall Ave., died Monday in St. Joseph's Hospital. Born in Camden, NY, she resided in Ithaca 20 years prior to moving to Syracuse. She graduated in 1938 with honors from Keuka College. Member of Al-pha Psi Omega, National Honorary Dramatic Fraternity. She was employed for 17 years in the College of Agriculture at Cornell University. She also did editorial work for the Duncan Hines organization. Mrs. Clapp was associated with the local American Red Cross for 38 years, first as a social worker, and after her retirement, she was a volunteer. She also served a term on the Red Cross Board of Directors. She was a member of Clara Barton and Legacy Societies. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, past president of United Methodist Women at the former First United Methodist Church. She was a member of Questers Antiques Club and Literary Club. She was predeceased by her husbands, Oliver McLean in 1954 and Lewis A. Clapp in 1981. For the past few years she split her time between her home in Syracuse and her condo in Laguna Woods, CA. Marie was an avid Bridge player and a member and officer of many clubs over the years including Syracuse Fire Departments Ladies Auxiliary, Twins & Triplets Club, St. Joseph's Senior Citizens Guild of the Town of Geddes. She was a communicant of St. Charles of Borromeo Church, Westvale. He attended the University of Buffalo and was awarded the Order of the Arrow by the Boy Scouts for his leadership role. He enjoyed traveling, and taking cargoliners (passenger-carrying freighters) with his wife to South and Central America and Europe. While in Europe they would travel before coming back on ships. He was a volunteer at Baltimore Woods and an elder at the Marcellus Presbyterian Church. He also enjoyed woodworking. He was a Navy veteran of WW2, serving on the USS Pasadena during the Pacific Theatre Operation. Survivors: his wife of 52 years, the former Audrey Smith; four sons, Daniel P. of Marcellus, Thomas M. of Douglasville, GA, Richard A. of Clay, and Donald E. Early in her marriage she worked as a secretary at Cambell Soup Co. in Camden, N.J., then helped her husband in his real estate and motel/restaurant businesses. She retired from Buxton in Agawam, Mass., in 1985. In Syracuse, she was a member of the Missionary Alliance Church. She was predeceased by her husband, Norman G. MacCauley in 1972. She enjoyed sewing, family and church. We will miss her dearly but celebrate her arrival to Heaven with Jesus Christ. Frushell Schoen, 86, of Mattydale, died Wednesday at Loretto's Fahey Building. She was a native of Syracuse and a 1937 graduate of North High School. She was a communicant of St. Margaret's Church, Mattydale and amember of the Legion of Mary. She was the first President of the former American Legion Auxiliary Post 1832 of Mattydale and was a life-member of the Pearls of Pearl Harbor. Mrs. Schoen is predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Bernard G. on December 12, 2000 and by her daughter, Beverly J. McDonald on January 13, 2003. Surviving are her daughters, Sandra L. Slattery, Sally (Paine) (Paine) Slattery January 3, 2005 Mrs. Slattery, a resident of Manlius, NY and formerly of Melrose, MA died at the Stonehedge Health and Rehabilitation Center in Chittenango, NY, on Monday evening January 3, 2005. Sally was born in Providence, RI, June 12, 1916 daughter of the late Sidney S. Paine and Audrey Lydia (Lake) Paine. Sally was raised in Massachusetts and later moved to Greensboro, NC. She attended Ward-Belmont Junior College and later became an Occupational Therapist (OT) with the American Red Cross. It was through her OT career that she met a special patient, John Slattery who later became her husband of nearly 34 years. Sally, an artistic person, who was known for her outstanding sketching and drawing abilities, also served as an aide at the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital in Melrose, MA in the 1970's. She and her late husband made their home in Melrose, MA from 1955-1993. Sally was the beloved wife of the late John J. Slattery. Loving mother of John P. Slattery and his wife, Lori of Fairfax Station, VA and Kathy Slattery of Manlius, NY. She was the cherished grandmother of Shannon N. Slattery, Riley C. Slattery and J.
