January 6, 2005 Anthony A. Alfano, 94, of Syracuse, formerly of Oxford Rd., Havertown, PA, beloved husband of the late Anne (nee Linsalata) Alfano, died Thursday. Tony was a three-sport athlete at Southern, participating in football, basketball and baseball. After graduation, he went to Temple, where he played basketball. He was on the national championship N.I.T. basketball team in 1938. He taught at Camden High School from 1942 to 1976. One of the great high school basketball coaches in the country, his Camden teams never had a losing season in his 20 years of coaching. He posted over 350 wins and won two state championships and 10 South Jersey championships. After retiring from Camden, Tony worked in the Villanova University library. Survivors: son, Tony Alfano (Michele); daughters, Annette Tobia (William) and Patricia Tobia (Loren); six grandchildren: Ensign Justin, Devin, Matthew, Brian, Tara and Christopher; and sister, Mary Merrill. Curtiss, 102, formerly of Leonard Ave., Nedrow, died Tuesday at the Syracuse Home Association in Baldwinsville. Born in Kingston, NY, Mrs. Curtiss was the widow of Orrin Park, who died in 1956, and Mason Curtiss,who died in 1994. Mrs. Curtiss retired in 1965 as the switchboard operator with Key Bank. She was a member of Bondafide-Hiawatha-Solvay Chapter #567 OES, past queen of Ilderim Temple #15 Daughters of the Nile and St. Paul's United Methodist Church. She enjoyed traveling, entertaining her guests, playing Scrabble and watching the birds and squirrels. Curtiss, "Pete," "Jack," 76, of Liverpool, died peacefully Wednesday with his loving family at his side. He attended St. Lucy's Academy. He is a veteran of WW II and the Korean War, serving with the U.S. Army. He retired from theSyracuse DPW. He is predeceased by his longtime companion, Leona Roberts. Together they were competitive rollerskaters and became national champions. They went on to teach and judge competitions. Foster, Florence "Tommy" January 6, 2005 Florence "Tommy" Foster, 92, died on Thursday, January 6, 2005 in Houston, TX. She was born in Solvay, NY, on October 20, 1912, to Dora and Ernest Kurtz. She was a loving mother, sister and grandmother with a constant smile on her face. Florence grew up in Solvay, where she was a secretary at Solvay Process and a member of the Solvay Mountain Top Fire Department Auxiliary. After marrying, she moved to Fulton, NY, where she was active in the Fulton Garden Club during her long marriage. She moved to Houston in 1998 to be closer to her son and his family, where she made many new friends with her warm heart and cheerful outlook. Mrs. Foster was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Leslie Randall Foster; her sisters, Mary Miller and Dorothy Dwyer; and brother, John Kurtz. Quatrino, of Mattydale, entered eternal rest on January 7, 2005, at the VA Hospital in Syracuse, with his loving family by his side. He was born May 11, 1929, in Yost, NY, the son of the late James and Antoinette Quatrino. He was educated in Little Falls schools. He was a master baker with degrees from United States Army/Quartermaster Baking School, Oklahoma A&M College, Baking Science and Management degree from the American Institute of Baking and a Master Baking Degree. His marriage to Estelle Mae took place December 7, 1951, in Chicago, Illinois. She predeceased him on January 7, 1980. He was a United States Army veteran, honorably discharged on July 15, 1948. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Commanders Club, Italian American Veterans, American Legion, American Society of Bakery Engineers, American Association of Cereal Chemists, Chicago Bakers Club (president 1966), Oklahoma State Alumni Association secretary from 1964 to 1969 and was the Alumni of the Year in 1969, then president in 1970. He was also a member of the Retailers Bakery Association for 30 years. He was last employed by Syracuse University. He enjoyed doing volunteer work and was Onondaga Volunteer of the Year. He was a member of many Neighborhood Watch Groups, Weed and Seed Board Member, Catholic Charities, Syracuse Northeast Community Center, and he recently retired as head usher of the Cathedral Church of Syracuse in September 2004. He is survived by three sons: Charles and his wife Janet, Dennis and his wife Margo of Little Falls, David and his wife Zaynab of Springfield, MA; two daughters, Roberta Quatrino of Albany and Denise and her husband Jeff Kirchofer of Germany; one brother, Philip of Herkimer; 19 grandchildren: Jessica and Justin Quatrino, Nina, Mia and Gina Quatrino, Scott, Sean and Rochelle Starring, Jason, Amanda, Jerrad, Amber, Ariel, Joshua, James and Abrianna Kirchofer, Sara, Abraham and Joseph; one very special friend, Marion Mazzuca of Syracuse. Born in Ft. Wayne, she graduated from South Side High School in 1932. She was active in several clubs and other organizations in Ft. Wayne, including being a past Queen of Jobe's Daughters. She was predeceased by a son, Dr. Rodney Springer, in 2002 and her husband Charles in 1985. Surviving: a daughter, Susan J. Roberts of Central Square; son-in-law Leonard Roberts; grandchildren: Diana Cornell, Lisa Fox, Charles Roberts, Julie Murphy, Rodney Springer Jr.; and 10 great-grandchildren. Theel, Cindy Anderson January 5, 2005 Cindy Anderson Theel, 42, of 29 First Drive, Weedsport, died Wednesday in Florida. She was formerly employed at Tessy Plastics. Surviving are her daughters, Stacey Staring of Jordan and Rachael Kinch at home; two grandchildren, Brianna and Brayton Staring; her fiance, William Halstead; her father, Charles Anderson of PA; three brothers: Charles Anderson of Plumville, PA, and John Anderson and Albert Milks Jr., both of Weedsport; two sisters, Bonnie Anderson of Auburn and Jennie Milks of Fair Haven; several nieces and nephews. Services: 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Bush Funeral Home-Elbridge, with Pastor Floyd Duger officiating. Spring burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery.
