A 1971 graduate of West Genesee High School, she was a wedding cake designer and decorator for 22 years. Nancy was formerly employed by the Onondaga County Health Dept., the YMED Program Clinic and the Onondaga ARC as a teacher aide, and volunteered for the Dream Foundation since 2001. Surviving are her husband of 33 years, Ronald; daughters, Sienna Holl of Murfreesboro, TN, and Melody Calley of Syracuse; son, Ram Calley of Ithaca; sister, Barbara (James) Aureli of Camillus; brother, Anthony (Chris) DeFoster of Skaneateles; grandchildren, Ramsey and Aidan Holl; and several nieces and nephews. "Bert" January 8, 2005 Bertha E. "Bert" Tafel Capsello, 98, of Liverpool, passed away peacefully with her family by her side at the home of her daughter on Saturday. Bert was born on September 6, 1906, in Syracuse and was the last of 12 children. As a young girl, shehelped with the house and caring for the children of her former school principal and Dr. Farmer. She also worked for several area farmers, including Dixon, Hafner and Keshley Farms. Mrs. Capsello was retired from Ward's Bakery, where she worked for 25 years, and also worked several years at Penny Curtis Bakery. She was a member of the Bakery and Confectionary Union. Bert was best known for her homemade grape jelly, chicken soup and hot peppers and cared for herself until she was 97. She was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Vincent J., in 1979; infant daughter, Emilia Elizabeth, in 1930; infant son, Leonard, in 1927; and son, William James, in 2002. Joe retired in 1990 after 20 years with Alltel Corp. of Fulton. He was previously employed with the family business, H.G. Ceratt Constuction Co.Joe was a former member of the Jordan Fish & Game Club, the Elbridge Rod & Gun Club, the Tuesday Night Golf League in Cato, the Wildwood Archery Club, Friday Night Couples League and the Rainbow Lanes Bowling League. He was an accomplished woodworker and cabinetmaker. January 9, 2005 Dorothy Gralow Jorgensen, 88, died after a long struggle with Parkinson's disease. A resident of Syracuse since 1967, she was the head librarian of the Fayetteville Free Library from 1968-82. She was active in the Coterie Club (Fayette-ville) and May Memorial Unitarian Society, and she was a founder of the Syracuse chapter of the U.S.-China People's Friendship Assoc. A 1940 honors graduate of Antioch, Dorothy held the MLS from Rutgers. She spent two periods in China: 1946-50, while her husband Charles was working for the International YMCA; and in 1985 when they returned to teach college English in Wenzhou. She enjoyed camping, canoeing, travel and the arts. Her friends and family remember her loving, generous spirit, her optimism and courage in times of illness, her concern for others and her wonderful talent as a storyteller. Ruth was employed in the accounting department of Syracuse Supply Co. for many years and enjoyed painting, gardening and cooking. She was a member of the Eastern Star. Born in Malone, she was the daughter of William B. and Annie E. Donovan. Mrs. Mahoney was a graduate of Franklin Academy in Maloneand the Parsons School of Design in New York City. For many years she was the fashion editor of the Syracuse Herald Journal. She had lived in Cazenovia since 1987 and previously lived in Jamesville, where she and her husband raised Morgan horses. Mrs. Mahoney was an antiques dealer and doll collector and belonged to the Mid-York Doll Club and the Senonda Doll Club. She was also a member of the Lake Titus Protective Association, the Bellevue Country Club, the Corinthian Club and the Morgan Horse Club. She was predeceased by her husband, John D. Mahoney. Rappaport, Helen Lapides January 9, 2005 Helen Lapides Rappaport died at the Jewish Health and Rehabilitation Center at Menorah Park. Born in Syracuse on March 29, 1917, Helen was the daughter of Samuel and Betty Cooper Lapides. After graduating from Central High School in 1934, Helen began a long and respected career as a sales associate, first with H. Fishman Co. and then with Rudolph Brothers Jewelers and was employed by Dey Brothers in its downtown location for over 30 years. She was a member of Temple Adath Yeshurun and the sisterhood of the temple. She was married to her husband Sidney for over 26 years, until he died in 1967. He was a former village judge of Ossining, NY, a member of the Columbia Crew Committee, a lifelong avid train enthusiast, and proudly served his country in the Navy during WWII. "Bud" Ryther, 80, of 212 Stoney Dr., Syracuse, and formerly of Fulton, died Friday, January 7, 2005, at Community General Hospital after a brief illness. He was born in Fulton and spent his early years there before moving to Long Beach, CA, for his early teen years. He returned with his family to Fulton and attended Fulton High School until enlisting in the U.S. Navy. He served in the Pacific and Caribbean theaters during World War II and in the Atlantic and Pacific during the Korean War. After his discharge, he remained involved in the U.S. Naval Reserve in Oswego for several years. Mr. Ryther advanced seven grades in the Navy, retiring with the rank of Sr. Chief Petty Officer. Mr. Ryther was employed at the former Sealright Company (Huhtamaki) in Fulton, Central Packaging Supply Co. in East Syracuse, and was part owner and founder of Central Industrial Packaging Supply Co. in East Syracuse before retiring in the late 1990s. He also was an advertising salesperson for The Valley News in the 1970s. Mr. Ryther was an avid history buff, particularly U.S. and military history. He was a voracious reader of nonfiction, mystery and biography books as well as the daily newspaper. He enjoyed playing golf and watching baseball and college basketball. He was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, the former Barbara Stanton, in 1995. He is survived by his second wife, Rosemarie (DeSocio) Ryther of Syracuse; his son, Stanton Ryther of Fulton; his daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Charles Copps of Fulton; and his grandchildren: Katherine (Jason) Smith of SC; Benjamin Ryther of Fulton; Aaron Stoughtenger of Oswego; Matthew Drane of Washington; and Kenneth and Amanda Copps of Fulton. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 12, at 10 a.m. in Episcopal Church of Saints Peter and John. Interment will take place in Sunset Hill Cemetery, Clinton, NY, in the spring. Published in the Syracuse Post Standard on 1/10/2005. Wood, Francis X. January 8, 2005 Francis X. Wood, 92, formerly of Dewitt, died on Saturday in Rochester under the care of Hospice of Rochester. He retired from Thomas A. Murphy & Son in Syracuse, was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and was a communicant of Holy Cross Church in DeWitt. He was predeceased by his wife Mary, who died in 2002. Survived by his son, Richard E. of Woodridge, IL; his daughter, Carol Fellows of Spencerport, NY; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services are Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Goddard-Crandall-Shepardson Funeral home and 11:30 a.m. in Holy Cross Church. Burial is in St. Mary's Cemetery, DeWitt.
