She was a music educator and a singer who pursued a career of six decades in Iowa, Oklahoma, and New York City. Ms. Birkhead studied singing with several American teachers and with the great Austrian/German soprano, Lotte Lehmann, and she was also coached by Fritz Lehmann. She sang in concert and musical theater throughout the Midwest. She was a professor of music and musical theater at the University of Iowa (Cedar Falls) and Oklahoma (Norman). She sent her graduating students to teach at other universities in states including Iowa, Oklahoma, Florida, California, Colorado, and Missouri. Other students sang at theaters in New York City, and other cities. Her greatest love was for the Lieder of Bach, Wolf, and Schubert. She developed that love under Lehmann and passed it on to her students. She was especially proud of them and their many accomplishments. Ms Birkhead was born in Holden, Missouri, and was educated in the public schools in Jefferson City, Missouri. She graduated from Christian College and the University of Missouri with bachelor's and master's degrees. She is survived by her brother, Guthrie S. Birkhead, Maxwell School, and three nephews, Guthrie, Richard and Evan, and their children. Services will be private. She retired in 1980 after 32 years of service as a Bookkeeper and Secretary at both Curtis Circulation and Kupperman & Wood Real Estate. Fenora was predeceased by her husband, James G.; a son, James C. Carno both passed in 1982; and a grandson, John M. Fortino in 1988. She is survived by a daughter, Mary (John) Fortino of Syracuse; three grandchildren, James L. Casey, 81, passed away Thursday at the Fahey Building of Loretto in Syracuse. Mr. Casey was a lifelong resident of the city of Syracuse. He was a graduate of St. Patrick's School, and served in the U.S. Army during WWII. John worked atthe U.S. Post Office for over 30 years. As a quality control officer, he was instrumental in developing plans for the operation of the Taft Road Post Office in N. Syracuse. Mr. Casey was a longtime communicant of St. Lucy's Church in Syracuse and St. Michael's Church on Onondaga Hill. Mr. Casey is survived by his wife of 57 years, Arlene (Morrison) Casey; two daughters, Kathleen (John) Bonner and Patricia (Robert) Toohey; his son, John L. Casey; his brother, Thomas P. Charlebois, Philip J. January 19, 2005 Philip J. Charlebois, 87, died on January 19, 2005. He was a longtime resident of Syracuse. Philip was born in Ottawa, Canada to Joseph L. and Noreen Giblin Charlebois. He was raised by his Uncle and Aunt, Michael and Mary Giblin after hisparents' death in 1925. He was a graduate of Most Holy Rosary School in 1936. Philip and Helen Phelan Charlebois were married for 58 years before her death in 2001. He served in the US Army during WWII and rose to the rank of Lieutenant. For many years he was associated with Westinghouse Corporation, serving as district manager in Syracuse, Binghamton and Rochester. He retired from the City of Syracuse code enforcement division in 1982. He was later associated with Normoyle Real Estate as Broker and Sales Trainer. He was an active member of Most Holy Rosary Parish. He was an original member of the Oxford Street Sandwich Project, Senior Citizens and volunteered at Most Holy Rosary School. He was predeceased by his sister, Maureen Giblin Klementoski; brothers, Michael Giblin and Joseph, Gerald, Cicil, Brendan and Vincent Charlebois. Fero, 61, of Camillus, died Thursday. He was born in Syracuse and lived in Camillus since 1968. Tom served as Camillus First Ward Town Cuncilman for 5-1/2 years. He served in the U.S. Army Airborne Division from 1962 to1965. Tom also served the New York State Police for 27 years, retiring as a Zone Sergeant in 1993. He was vice-president of the Camillus West Homeowners Association. He was a member of the VFW Knifetown Post #1540, Camillus Rod & Gun Club and the Association of Former NYS Troopers. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. Lindo, 86, of Palm Harbor, died on November 21, 2004 at home under the care of Hospice of the Florida Suncoast. He was born in Panama City, Republic of Panama. He spent his formative years in New York City and attended Choate School graduating in 1936. He was also a graduate of Cornell University with a degree in Engineering. He was a highly decorated officer of WWII and served in the U.S. Army Reserves until 1970 when he retired with the rank of Colonel. He also developed one of the first discount retail building supply material companies in the Northeast, Minfelt Wholesale and Stelican Kash & Karry, in Mattydale, Rochester and Watertown, NY. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Jacqueline Fidanque Lindo of Palm Harbor, and by the children of his marriage to Sharon Griffin Lindo (deceased): Richard, Jr. (Toby) of Chicago, Stephen of Montclair, NJ, Candace Sanchez of Palm Harbor, and Lisa Story of Tarpon Springs, FL. Niciu, Constantin "Coasty" Niciu January 20, 2005 Constantin "Coasty" Niciu, 73, passed away January 20, 2005, at Sunset Nursing Home, Boonville, NY. He was born August 2, 1931, in Osceola, NY, a son of Andron and Elena Anghelache Niciu, and was educated in the Osceola and Camden Schools. Coasty served with the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Arthur S. Moran American Legion Post #66, a Charter Member of the Redfield Fire Department, a member and Past President of the Osceola Rod and Gun Club and was also a member of the Mud Flats Chapter I.O.O.B. In 1958, he married Virginia Audus; they had four children. In 1981, he married Gala (Gail) Ranger in Osceola. Coasty retired from the Camden Wire Co. as a Strander. He also worked as an independent contractor for many years. Coasty could fix anything. He loved to fish and play pitch. He was a kind, generous man who was always willing to help when needed. He is survived by his wife, Gail; two sons, Ben and Benita Niciu, Camden, NY, Scott and Marilyn Niciu, Ashtabula, OH; a daughter, Velda and Chris Willson, Osceola, NY; a granddaughter, Carrie, Osceola, NY; a sister, Iliana Niciu, Osceola, NY; two brothers, Victor and Maretta Niciu, Washington Court House, OH, Mihai and Esther Niciu, Ashtabula, OH, and several nieces and nephews. She was born March 24, 1922 in Mohawk the daughter of the late Fredrick and Martha Spurr Jackson, and was a graduate of Mohawk School. On February 11, 1947 she married Richard Parker in Mohawk. He passed away August 9, 1995. Mrs. Parker was employed as a clerk with the W.T. Grant Co. in Ilion until her retirement. Mrs. Parker was a member of the Mohawk United Methodist Church and was active in the church. Mrs. Parker is survived by a son, Kenneth R. Parker of Ilion; two daughters and a son-in-law, Nancy Geer of Rotterdam, Marilyn and Timothy Stalloch of Cicero; a brother and sister-in-law, Rev. January 19, 2005 Alvin L. Reed, 62, of Martville, died Wednesday, January 19, 2005, at A.L. Lee Memorial Hospital, Fulton. Born in Syracuse, he had lived in Fulton before moving to Martville almost two years ago. He was a Vietnam War Army veteran and had been a mechanic at D & T Motors, Hastings. He had also worked at the Eckerd Warehouse in Liverpool. Surviving are his wife, Charlotte; three daughters, Michele Reed, Colleen Stout and Roberta Reed; a son, Michael Reed; two stepdaughters, Elisha Hull and Angela Shetler; four stepsons, Charles and Carl Reichel, Elijah Hull and Douglas Shetler; 10 grandchildren; and a brother, Herbert Reed of Philadelphia, PA. Born in Syracuse, she lived in Camillus for 48 years. Lucille was a homemaker and past leader of the Camp Fire Girls. She was also a communicant of Holy Family Church. Surviving are her husband of 50 years, Harold; children, Joanne Harvey of Merrimack, NH, Harold R. of N. Hampton, MA, John M. of Bedford, NH and Mary Curry of Camillus; sister, Marian Sampo of Syracuse; four grandsons; one granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be at 12:30 p.m. Monday at Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus and at 1 p.m. in Holy Family Church where a funeral Mass will be celebrated. January 15, 2005 Mark D. Romano, 47, of Westvale, passed away on Saturday after a long battle with a heart disease. A lifelong resident of Syracuse, he graduated from Syracuse University School of Law and was a self-employed attorney, practic-ing all aspects of law. Mr. Romano served his country as a Quartermaster & Chaplain in the U.S. Navy, where he received several meritorious medals for outstanding achievement. Predeceased by his father, Joseph N. Romano Jr. who passed away October 12, 2004. Survivors: his loving mother, Rose Caramella Romano; sister, Susan (Mark) LaFaver; godson and nephew, TJ Widas; two nieces, Nichole and Mary; many aunts, uncles and cousins. Sischo, 66, 30 Wardwell St., Adams, retired Watertown School District math teacher, died Wednesday in Watertown. Survived by three sons, David R., Rodman, Brian C., Syracuse, and Kevin F., Guilderland; two sisters, Mrs. Ron (Judy) Newton, Adams, and Mrs. Larry (Cathy) Hudnall, Russellville, Arkansas.
