Casey, 81, passed away Thursday at the Fahey Building of Loretto in Syracuse. Mr. Casey was a lifelong resident of the city of Syracuse. He was a graduate of St. Patrick's School, and served in the U.S. Army during WWII. John worked atthe U.S. Post Office for over 30 years. As a quality control officer, he was instrumental in developing plans for the operation of the Taft Road Post Office in N. Syracuse. Mr. Casey was a longtime communicant of St. Lucy's Church in Syracuse and St. Michael's Church on Onondaga Hill. Mr. Casey is survived by his wife of 57 years, Arlene (Morrison) Casey; two daughters, Kathleen (John) Bonner and Patricia (Robert) Toohey; his son, John L. Casey; his brother, Thomas P. A native of Mattydale, he was the son of the late George and Florence Eifler and resided in Cicero for the past 44 years. He was a 1955 graduateof North Syracuse High School and served in the U.S. Navy for more than three years aboard the USS Sierra. Walt retired in 1993, after more than 30 years as maintenance supervisor at Crucible Steel in Solvay. He was a life member and past president of the South Bay Volunteer Fire Department. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, the former Carol Crandall; a daughter, Deb (Dick) Stephenson of Phoenix; three sisters: Eldora (Claude) Miller of W. Fran was retired from St. Camillus Health & Rehabilitation Center and was formerly employed by Loblaw's, Brinks, Daw's Drugs and BishopLudden. She enjoyed traveling. An avid golfer, she was a past member of Pine Grove Country Club. Fran was a devoted wife, and a loving mother and grandmother. Tom served as Camillus First Ward Town Cuncilman for 5-1/2 years. He served in the U.S. Army Airborne Division from 1962 to1965. Tom also served the New York State Police for 27 years, retiring as a zone sergeant in 1993. He was vice president of the Camillus West Homeowners Association. He was a member of the VFW Knifetown Post #1540, Camillus Rod & Gun Club and the Association of Former NYS Troopers. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. January 20, 2005 Dr. John David Halverson, 63, of Manlius, passed away Thursday. Born in Owatonna, MN, he graduated from Fayetteville-Manlius High School in 1959. He graduated from Hamilton College and received his M.D. from SUNY Upstate. He did aresidency in general surgery at Washington University Medical School, St. Louis, prior to serving on its faculty. He was Professor of Surgery at SUNY Upstate Medical University the past 14 years. He was the director of the Bariatric Surgery Center. Retired January 1, Dr. Halverson was appointed Professor Emeritus of the Department of Surgery. Dr. Halverson was former president of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery and was a member of many national and international professional associations. He was a member of DeWitt Community Church and the Cavalry Club. An annual teaching day has been established at Upstate Medical University in Dr. Halverson's name. In 2002, he was named to the F-M High School Hall of Distinction. He served in the Army Medical Corps at Kenner Army Hospital at Ft. Lee, VA. A graduate of Corcoran High School Class of 2000, Eric was a full-time music student at OCC. A talented artist, Eric had many passions, including music and glass artistry. Paratore, 77, of Liverpool, died peacefully on Saturday at home with his family by his side. He was born in Syracuse and educated in the Syracuse schools. He was a veteran of WWII in the U.S. Army and served in the Pacific Theatreof Operations in Japan. Anthony was a communicant of Clay Presbyterian Church, Clay, NY. He enjoyed fishing, his vegetable garden, his grandchildren and his home life. Sharpe, of the Valley, passed away Saturday at Crouse Hospital. Born in Binghamton, she lived in Syracuse since 1938 and was the widow of Troy "Tex" Sharpe, who died in 1982. Dorothy was a communicant of St. James Church. She was a registered nurse. Surviving are her sons: James T. (Kay E.) Sharpe of Jamesville, Robert E. (Joan) Sharpe of Liverpool and Terrance F. Taber, 76, passed away Friday, January 21, 2005, at Community General Hospital. He was an Eagle Scout and graduated from Onondaga Valley Academy in 1946. He later graduated from Syracuse University in 1950, where he was amember of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. He was in the U.S. Navy Naval Reserve from 1946 until 1950 and then served two years of active service aboard the U.S.S. Salem in 1950 and 1951 during the Korean War. He was employed 19 years at Crucible Steel Co. in the Industrial Engineering and Computer Systems departments. In addition, he was employed 19 years at Crouse-Hinds Division of Cooper Industries as a senior systems analyst until he retired in 1993. He was a communicant of St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church on Onondaga Hill, where he was a lector, eucharistic minister and a member of the Parish Council. Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Claire R. (Tormay); a son, Richard Jr., and daughter-in-law, Mary (Magill), of Liverpool; four treasured grandchildren: Mary O'Connor Taber, Richard M. Taber III, James O'Connell Taber and Paul Magill Taber; as well as several loved nieces and nephews. A service will take place on Tuesday, January 25, at 9:30 a.m. at Butler-Badman Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Michael's Church at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Agnes Cemetery. January 21, 2005 Anthony J. Vecchio, 80, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2005, at his home in North Syracuse. Born in Canastota to parents Salvatore and Lucy (Logiudice) Vecchio, he graduated in 1943 from North High School. As a memberof the 899th Field Artillery Bat-talion, he served his country with distinction during World War II in the Battle of the Bulge and other European locations, earning a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Upon his honorable discharge, he went on to graduate from Syracuse University College of Law and joined the New York State and Onondaga County Bar Associations. With a reputation for honesty, fairness and moral character, he was a partner in the law firm of Rizzo, Aloi, Grasso & Urchioli in Syracuse and later with Vecchio & Clark in North Syracuse. He served as North Syracuse Village Justice for 10 years and was a member of the New York State Magistrates Association. An avid boater, he served several terms as Commander of Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 2-1, in which he remained active until his recent illness. A devoted father and husband, he enjoyed spending time on the water and at home with his family, where he enjoyed gardening, reading and socializing. He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Cicero. He was predeceased by his wife of 34 years, Patricia (Brothers) Vecchio, with whom he raised two daughters, Valerie (Frank J.) Falso of Fayetteville and Vanessa (Brian) Sands of Liverpool. Anthony was the beloved grandfather of Andrew (Sarrena) Falso of Fayetteville; Timothy Falso of Bolton, Vermont; and Kimberly, Tyler, Rachel and Zachary Sands, all of Liverpool. He was also great-grandfather to Morgan (daughter of Andrew and Sarrena). He is survived by his caring wife of 18 years, Gloria Vecchio. Other survivors include his brother, Thomas Vecchio of North Syracuse; his sister, Concetta (Leo) Napolitano of Liverpool; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles. He was predeceased by his brother, Rocco Vecchio, in 1991. Survivors also include stepdaughters, Cindy (Gorden) Lewis of Lafayette and Barbara (Ed) Szlamczynski of Star Lake; stepson, Robert (Kim) Trudeau of Palm Springs, CA; stepgrandchildren: Joshuah Lewis, Todd (Jody) Szlamczynski, Lisa (Jim) LaRocque and several stepgreat-grandchildren. He is fondly remembered by his daughters as an example of integrity, love, faith and strength; by his wife as a faithful and genial companion; by his grandchildren and stepgranchildren for his playfulness and kindness; and by all for his warmth, humor, optimism and character. Winters Jr., William January 19, 2005 William Winters Jr., of Syracuse, died on January 19 at Community General Hospital as a result of a fall. William retired from Bristol-Meyers Squibb Co. in 1993. Winters; sisters, Helen Petrowski of Syracuse, Janet Wohlrab of Greenville, OH, and Delores Bruce of Syracuse; three grandchildren, Zoe, Sydney and Bodhi of Big Rapids, MI; and several nieces and nephews.
