Blasi, 87, of Syracuse, passed away Monday in St. Joseph's Hospital. A life resident, she was a communicant of Our Lady of Pompei Church and was a Eucharistic Minister and also a member of the Legion of Mary. She had formerly been em-ployed by the Lennox Co. for 25 years and then by the Onondaga County Sheriffs Dept. for eight years. She is survived by two nieces, Maria (Ray) Hantsch of East Syracuse and Joanne Anthony of Liverpool; a brother, Daniel Blasi of Rochester; several other nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 9:15 a.m. in the Pirro & Sons Funeral Home and 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Pompei Church where a funeral Mass will be celebrated. Bomstein, Edith January 24, 2005 Edith Bomstein, formerly of Syracuse and Manlius, died on January 24 at the age of 82 of natural causes. She and her husband, Joseph Bomstein, relocated to the Philadelphia area almost four years ago when his health began to decline. Mrs. Bomstein and her family moved to Syracuse in 1960 when her husband took a position with Bristol Myers as a chemist. An accomplished pianist, she especially loved to play Beethoven and Chopin pieces. She was active at Temple Adath Yeshurun both in the sisterhood and Hadassah. She later helped run a food program for the needy that was funded in part by the national Jewish charitable organization, Mazon. For many years, she and her husband participated in a monthly Jewish study group. When she was not raising her children, she enjoyed playing bridge and traveling with her husband. In the summers, she loved to go to Green Lakes to swim and spend time with her friends. In the fall and winter, there were drama productions on campus and performances of the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra to attend. Mrs. Bomstein's decline began with the deterioration of her husband's health and was accelerated when he died in June, 2004. Funeral services took place on January 27 outside Philadelphia. She is survived by her brother; and her sister; as well as, three children; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Bubendey, Shirley Smith January 23, 2005 Mrs. Bubendey was born in Syracuse, NY, July 15, 1921. She attended Rosemary Hall, Greenwich, CT and Syracuse University, College of Fine Arts majoring in Illustration. She was a member of Alpha Phi. She was married to Henry Abert Orrick III of Baltimore from 1942 to 1952. She was a trustee of The Syracuse Museum of Fine Arts (now Everson Museum) and taught and exhibited there. She was an original Trustee of The Rosamund Gifford Foundation in Syracuse for over 30 years and a member of the Junior League. She married William Holbrook in 1954 and moved to Darien, CT where she became interested in ceramics at The Silvermine Art School. This interest led to making wrought iron tile tables depicting homes, gardens, boats, etc. for individual customers. In Darien, she was active in The Republican Club, The Tokeneke Club and Wee Burn Country Club. Two years after the death of William Holbrook, she married James Ramsey Minor of Cincinnati, Ohio. They moved permanently to Vero Beach, FL spending summers in CT and Traverse City, MI. She continued her art doing mainly portraits. She belonged to the Vero Beach Art Club, Rowayton Art Center, American Impressionist Society and The American Society of Portrait Painters. In Vero Beach, she was also a former Board Member of The Riverside Theatre and belonged to The Riomar Country Club. Mr. Minor died in 1983. In 1987, she married Paul Frederick Bubendey who survives her. Also two sons, Peter Montgomery Orrick of Vero Beach, Christopher Kenyon Orrick of Raleigh, NC; two grandsons, Peter Orrick Jr. and Preston Orrick; also a stepdaughter, Dr. Shirley Holbrook Wick; and two stepgrandsons, Leland Smith and Peter Smith of Mystic, CT; stepdaughters, Madeleine Geohegan, Clara Baur; and stepson, Paul Bubendey Jr. A memorial service and reception will be held on Monday, January 31 at 2 p.m. at Oak Harbor with Father Lorne Coyle of Trinity Episcopal Church officiating. Gardner, 83, formerly known as Rena Gardner Clapp, died peacefully at Crouse Hospital after a brief stay. Born in Caughdenoy, NY, she lived in the Central Square/Brewerton area most of her life. She was self employed as a beautician for many years before she worked as a teller and installment loan clerk at the First National Bank of Central Square. In her later years, Rena helped her daughter Barbara raise her two daughters, Samantha and Jessica. Rena was actively involved in her community. She was a longtime member of the Universalist Church of Central Square, serving as treasurer for many years, and she enjoyed working with the Central Square Lioness Club. Hirsch, age 93, of North Syracuse, NY, died Sunday in St. Joseph's Hospital & Health Center, Syracuse, NY. Mr. Hirsch was born in Croghan, NY; he was the son of the late Martin and Matilda Pelow Hirsch. He served in the Army Air Corpsduring WWII. Mr. Hirsch's favorite hobby was gardening. Although he enjoyed hunting and fishing, his garden topped it off. His wife and his son, Robert predeceased him. Mr. Hirsch spent most of his latter years at home caring for his garden. He was in the 94th Fighter Wing. He died peacefully in his sleep at St. Joseph's Hospital. He spent his military time at the Air Force base in Texas. He was a supervisor at Imperial Gardens. Mr. Hirsch was a member of American Legion Post 1297, North Syracuse, NY. She was a member of the Antique Dealers' Association, the United Methodist Church in Manlius, and a 59-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 141. Kutzleb, 80, 3988 Route 11, Pulaski, died January 9, 2005, at home with his family around him. He was a retired Commander in the Navy, serving in three wars. He was a world renowned search and recovery expert. Laskoski, Henry A. January 23, 2005 Henry A. Laskoski, 83, of Canastota, passed away Sunday at St. Joseph's Hospital. Born in Hamilton, NY, he moved to Syracuse as a child. He was a veteran of WWII and served in the U.S. Air Force. He was a carpenter by trade and retired from North Syracuse School District as a maintenance supervisor in 1988. Henry moved to Oneida Lake in 1961 and was an avid fisherman. He was a parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi Church, Bridgeport. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Lena Cali, in 1995, and also three sisters. Morse, James Leland January 22, 2005 James Leland Morse, 95, of St. Petersburg, Florida, died Saturday, January 22, 2005, at his daughter's home in Savona, New York. Mr. Morse was born June 22, 1909, at home in Riverside, Town of Corning, New York, the son of William and Lela Henry Morse. He graduated from Northside High School in 1927 and Syracuse University in 1931. He married Hazel Irene Bratt on April 15, 1933, in St. Paul, Minnesota. Mr. Morse retired with 30 years active service from Ingersoll-Rand in 1971 as an order analyst. He was a past master and 60-year member of the Savona Masonic Lodge #755. He owned and operated a local dairy farm. He and his wife moved to Florida in 1971. He was president of the Savona Central School Board of Education. Mr. Morse is survived by four children, Henry of Daphne, Alabama, Louise of Coopers Plains, New York, Carl of Abrams, Wisconsin, and L. Adair of Elmira, New York; and his lifelong friend, Carl West of Tioga, Pennsylvania. He is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Vera of Arizona and Delores of Minnesota. He was predeceased by his wife of 68 years, a son James, and his son-in-law Robert L. Wilson. His sisters, Jessie and Ethel, and in-laws, Tom, Dan, Harry, E. She was born April 14, 1911 and resided in Auburn her entire life. Isabel had been employed at the Columbian Rope Company as a credit manager. She retired in 1976 after 46 yearsof service. She later volunteered her talents as auditor for St. Mary's Church and was a self-employed income tax return preparer for many years. She was a graduate of Auburn Academic High School and attended Cortland Normal School. In her earlier years, Isabel was very involved in community activities and was especially active as a volunteer with both the Auburn Memorial Hospital and Mercy Hospital Auxiliaries. She played golf and bridge with equal gusto, and was able to remain active in local bridge groups until recently. Over the years, she was a member of both the Auburn and Owasco Golf and Country Clubs, and one year won the Auburn Country Club President's Handicap Cup. She was the daughter of John E. and Anna McDermott Stapleton, both deceased. She was also predeceased by her sisters, Anne I. Stapleton and Helen S. Demming, and her brothers, John Stapleton and Dr. Thomas D. Stapleton. Isabel is survived by her nephews and nieces, T. David Stapleton and wife, Helene, Sheila M. Stapleton, Miriam M. Moynihan and husband, Kevin, J. William Stapleton and wife, Kathrine, and W. David Demming; and nine grandnieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Friday, January 28 at 10 am. at St. Mary's Church. Tom, 89, died Sunday, January 23, 2005 in Syracuse, after a brief illness. Mrs. Tom was a lifetime resident of Syracuse and a retiree from General Electric Co. where she worked for 20 years. She was a devoted communicant of Our Lady ofSolace Church where she was a member of The Altar and Rosary Society and the Legion of Mary. She was predeceased by her husband, James D. Tom, Sr.; and seven sisters and brothers, Barbara Czachowski (Klisz), Helen Klisz, Stella Lebiedzinski (Klisz), Irene Petorek (Klisz); Leo Klisz, Edward Klisz and John Klisz. She is survived and loved by her sons and daughter, James D. Tom, John N. Tom and Ann K. "Jo" January 25, 2005 Josephine "Jo" C. Varre, 90, Lind Ave., Mattydale, passed away in the company of her family at St. Joseph's Hospital. A native of Syracuse, she resided in Mattydale since 1975. Jo was a communicant of St. Margaret's RCChurch, a member its Socialites group, and a member of the Salina Civic Seniors. She was a loving and caring mother and worked for eight years at Electronics Pkwy. for the General Electric Co. until 1972. She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, James D. Varre, in 1991, and her daughter, Betty Galambos, in 2003. She is survived by two daughters, Patricia (Ralph) Sacco of Lyncourt, Barbara Hundshamer of Jamesville; two sons, Louis Varre of Mattydale, James Varre Jr. formerly of Syracuse; a brother, Al Capato of the Nottingham; 12 grandchildren, Michael, Stephen Colleen, Susan, Sherry, Sheila, Janice, Ralph Jr., Lisa, Sheila, Jillian, Kristen; several great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. Vassallo, Anna B. January 21, 2005 Mrs. Anna B. (Polifroni) Vassallo died on Friday, January 21 in Regents Hospital, Minnesota. She was born in Syracuse on February 26, 1925. She was the beloved wife of Peter Vassallo who died in 2002. She retired in 1985 from Crouse HindsCo., Syracuse. She was the loving mother of two daughters, Almerinda (Dennis Pallocco) Pullano of North Syracuse and Sharon (Ron) Koslofsky of Burnsville, MN; cherished grandmother of Stacy (Rick) Prairie of Rosemount, MN and Peter Beatty of South Carolina; seven great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; three sisters, Catherine Ruggireo of Clay, Rose Palencar of Mattydale and Connie Mastry of Arizona; and two brothers, Anthony Polifroni of Lyncourt and Michael Polifroni of Syracuse. January 25, 2005 Trifly E. Wood, 91, of Tully, passed away on Tuesday after a short illness. Trifly served in WWII and was a member of the LaFayette VFW. He is survived by two sons, Joel and Timmothy Wood, both of Tully; sisters, Mary Bilbe of Syracuse and Lillian Shute of LaFayette; brother, Donald Wood of N.
