Clemens, Sylvia June 29, 2005 Sylvia Clemens was born in Trinidad, West Indies, to Cleveland and the late Grace Beckles. After graduating from high school, she continued to show the resilience and determination to succeed, which had been evident during her early years, by immigrating to Italy, England and Canada before finally joining some of her family members in Brooklyn, New York. While in New York, she worked for several major companies and was a very active member of St. Theresa's Parish, becoming a member of the church choir and a Sunday school teacher. On October 13, 1985, she entered into holy matrimony with Paul Clemens and later relocated in 1992 to Syracuse, New York. She became an active member of Our Lady of Solace Parish, joined the choir and taught Sunday school while obtaining her degree from Bryant and Stratton College. Her passion for being involved and the enormous love and pride she possessed for her heritage would again have her actively involved in the Syracuse West Indian Carnival celebration. She was not afraid to reach out to the private and public sectors to raise funds, all with the hope of continuing to promote her culture, all the while battling the ravages of an insidious disease that at times would be quite debilitating as it continued to ravage her body. Yet she never complained or looked for sympathy. In fact, few people knew of her illness, for she accepted every aspect of her life as part of God's greater plan for her as she went about her daily activities with all the enthusiasm and strength she could garner to achieve success at whatever she did. Sylvia fought an incredible fight to the end, always with a positive outlook and with faith and trust that the Lord is the ultimate decision maker, but on Wednesday, June 29, she succumbed to her illness at her home with her family at her side. She was truly a remarkable individual, and all those who knew her are blessed to have crossed her path. A devoted wife, a loving and caring daughter, and an unbelievablly great sister and aunt, she cared unselfishly for her family and always had a smile, sharp wit, and words of comfort and support for all. She leaves to mourn her passing her husband Paul; her sisters, Marcelyn Epps, Isadora Cowie, Earleen Beckles Frederick, Hazel Ross; brothers, Horace, twin brother Sylvan, Selwyn and Earl Beckles; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers and sisters-in-law, and good friends. Services will be Thursday, 11 a.m., at Our Lady of Solace Church, with burial in Tunapuna Trinidad, West Indies. Calling hours will be 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Burns-Garfield Funeral home.
