He was a native of Syracuse and the son of the late Edward John and Thelma Seeley Backus. Leeland was a retired truck driver and a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was a member of Teamsters Union #707 in Hempstead, NY, and a member of the National Riflemen's Association. He was also an associate member of the National Aeronautic Association, enjoying planes and flying since his youth. Survivors include his wife, Bessie Appell Backus of the home; daughters, Dawn Marie Backus of Liverpool, Colleen Backus of Syracuse and Brenda Backus of Oklahoma; stepdaughters, Robin Fuller, and her husband, Mike, of Greensboro, NC, and Dawn Sutton of Pleasant Garden, NC; stepson, Bill Robertson of Greensboro, NC; brothers, David Backus of Pennellville, George Backus of Bridgeport and Donald Backus of Minoa. Bertini, Ann Vino July 2, 2005 Ann Vino Bertini, 82, of Cortland, passed away Saturday, July 2, 2005, in St. Joseph's Hospital, Syracuse. She was born in Syracuse and lived in Mattydale, Romulus, Skaneateles, Cortland and Syracuse before moving back to Cort-land in 1981. A graduate of Skaneateles High School 1940, St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing 1944, and Simmons School of Mortuary Science 1974, she also took graduate courses at Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI. Mrs. Bertini served as a 1st Lt. in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps during WWII. She owned Bertini Funeral Home in Skaneateles and in Cortland (1975-1995). She was a communicant of St. Mary's Church, Cortland. She was a member of St. Joseph's Alumni Association, Catholic Daughters of America, Cortland Historical Society and Skaneateles Historical Society. Also she was a former member of Smith School PTA, NYS Funeral Directors' Association, American Legion-Cortland City Post 489 and a former director of Caring Community Hospice of Cortland Foundation Board and Department of Social Services of Cortland County Advisory Board. She was a co-founder with her late husband of the Cortland YWCA swim team. She was employed by St. Mary's Hospital, Syracuse; St. Joseph's Hospital, Syracuse; Mercy Hospital, Auburn; Cortland Memorial Hospital, Cortland; and Biggs Memorial Hospital, Ithaca. She was an active volunteer at St. Mary's School until her death. John served with the Timberwolves 104th Infantry Division of World War II, from which he received several medals. Gulley, James July 3, 2005 James Thomas Gulley, 80, of Hixson, TN, passed away at Memorial Hospital on July 3, 2005, of complications from Alzheimer's disease. Mr. Gulley was born in Chattanooga, raised in Soddy-Daisy and Dunlap, TN, and Columbus, GA, and was a communicant of St. Jude's Catholic Church in Chattanooga. He was an 18-year veteran of the U.S. Army Paratroopers and the U.S. Marine Corps, serving in WW II campaigns in North AFrica, China and several Pacific islands. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a 4th-degree member of the Knights of Columbus and a loyal member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. Prior to retirement in 2000, he was a long-haul truck- and intercity bus driver. He was also proud of his contributions as a welder and laborer at Solvay Process in Geddes. He was preceded in death by his son, Michael Gulley, and his daughter, Jane Gulley Otero. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Marguerite T. Kennedy Gulley. He was the devoted, respected and loving father of his children, Lynn (Fred) Jolly of Nicholasville, KY; Francine Parsons of Birmingham, AL; and Jim (Rose) Gulley of Penfield, NY. He was a retired postal clerk with the U.S. Post Office, a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, a communicant of St. Vincent dePaul Church and a memberof the DAV and VFW. He was predeceased by his wife, Josephine, in 1978 and daughter, Mary Drew, in 1999. He is survived by his sons: John of Vermont, Joseph (Ro) of Syracuse and Thomas (Lynn) of Indiana; daughters: Kathy (Michael) Byrnes of Jamesville, Marge Vargo of Syracuse, Liz (Jeffery) Smith of Minnesota and Anne Cheney of Kingston, Ontario; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a niece, Carol Newton of North Carolina. Funeral services are Thursday at 9:30 a.m. at Goddard-Crandall-Shepardson Funeral Home and at 10 a.m. in St. Vincent dePaul Church. Burial is in Assumption Cemetery. Weiermann, Pauline Mary July 2, 2005 Pauline Mary Weiermann, 76, of Greenway-New London Rd., Verona, NY, passed away peacefully into the arms of the Lord on July 2, 2005, surrounded by her loving family. She was born January 9, 1929, in Rome, the daughter of Frank and Pau-line Gymburch Barber. She married Herbert on July 2, 1949. He predeceased her on May 14, 2003. Pauline spent her life devoted to her family and friends. She was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ and the Lee American Legion Women's Auxiliary. Surviving are two daughters and one son-in-law, Sandra and Gene Woodcock, Manlius, and Diane Weiermann, Baldwinsville; one son, Gary Weiermann, Verona; granddaughter, Amanda, and grandson, Brandon, both of Manlius; one sister and brother-in-law, Anne and John Seidel; one brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Leona Barber, Rome; sister-in-law, Bernice Barber, Maryland; several nieces, nephews and many special friends. She was predeceased by a brother, John Barber, in 1974. A special thank you to Dr. Robert Carhart and staff at 550 Harrison Center and the Coronary Care Unit (6C) at University Hospital. Mrs. Williams was a former resident of Bellevue and had lived in Washington since 1967. Born December 24, 1936, in Scranton, PA, she attended school in Dalton, PA, and later moved to Fayetteville, NY, graduating from Fayetteville-Manlius High School in 1955. She enjoyed boating on the waters of the Pacific Northwest, sewing, gardening, crafts, visiting Colonial Williamsburg and spending time with her many friends from the Bellevue Sail and Power Squadron. She loved her family and was passionate about her responsibilities as a wife, mother and grandmother. Ann graced us with her calm, gentle spirit and will be missed by all who were touched by her presence. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Donald G. Williams; her two children, Greg (Carol Ann) Williams and Tracyann (Larry) Anderson, all living in the Seattle area; her three grandchildren: Ali Williams of Phoenix, AZ, and Dylan and Haley Anderson; her mother, Mabel Games, and her sister, Margaret Games, both of Arlington, VA. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, July 12, 2005, at 3 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, 127 State St., Kirkland, WA 98033.
