Palmer, 92, of Baldwinsville, passed away on Sunday, July 3, 2005, at Syracuse Home. He joins his beloved wife of 67 years, Aileen (nee Patterson), who predeceased him in 2000. He resided most of his life in the Baldwinsville area and is a former mayor and trustee of the village, and was Baldwinsville's first (Volunteer) Man of the Year recipient in 1961. He retired from the diner in 1978, but not from cooking, as his many friends loved to remind him on seeing him at the nursing home. His volunteering, mostly through his pie baking (estimated to be over 300,000 during his life), has helped such organizations as the Baldwinsville Public Library (trustee in charge of fundraising when funding came from public donations only), Meals on Wheels, McHarrie's Legacy, the Baldwinsville First United Methodist Church as well as other area churches, Bal-On-Sen Triangle #65 (of which he was also a Daddy), Seneca River Lodge #160, as well as those in need of a hot meal. A friend recently shared that she remembers people lying in wait in the parking lot of local bake sales for him to arrive, because they wanted his pies so badly. He was also a trustee for the first Onondaga Library System Advisory Board, a trustee of the Riverview Cemetery Association and on many committees for the Baldwinsville First UMC, including designing the church kitchen. He received the Masonic Dedicated Service Award for his outstanding work. He also was the first honorary male member of the Female Charitable Society, for which he helped maintain the Loan Closet, a place where the residents of Greater Baldwinsville may borrow home medical equipment. This is also an honor he held with the United Methodist Women. Family and friends extend their deepest thanks to the entire staff of Syracuse Home for their devotion to his care and their support of all of us in Al's final years.
