July 7, 2005 James L. Boyle, 84, of 3740 County Route 57, Oswego, died Thursday evening at his home. Mr. Boyle was born in Brooklyn, the son of the late James and Mary (Thompson) Boyle, and he has been a resident of East Northport, Long Island, until moving to Oswego in August of 2004. Mr. Boyle was employed as an installation supervisor for Western Electric, in NYC. He was a communicant of St. Joseph Church, Oswego, and the Knights of Columbus Council #4810, Long Island. Mr. Boyle served with the 27th Division of the United States Army as a Staff Sergeant from 1940 until 1945. He was the recipient of the Bronze Star, and the Purple Heart. Mr. Boyle was a member of the Long Island Veterans of Foreign Wars. Mr. Boyle is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marie Boyle of Oswego; his children, Michael (Susan) Boyle of Long Island, Jeannie Sweeney of Baldwinsville, Kate (Pete) Colucci of Oswego; his brother, Thomas Boyle of PA; his sisters, Catherine Baumer of Brooklyn, Rose Domo of VA, Joan Bessey and Annmarie Eick, both of NJ; and his loving grandchildren, Kerry, RJ, Erin and Christopher Sweeney, Jim Boyle, and Carson Colucci; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Monday, 8:15 a.m., from the Sugar and Scanlon Funeral Home, Oswego, and 9 a.m. in St. Joseph Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. James Cesta. Burial will be in All Saints Mausoleum at St. Peter's Cemetery. Calling hours will be Sunday 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home, 147 West Fourth St., Oswego. Burling II, 75, of 2301 County Route 7, Oswego, died Thursday, July 7, in the Oswego Hospital, after a long illness. Jim was born in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of the late Dr. F. Temple and Katherine (White) Burling. Jim received a degree in physics in 1952 from Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa. He received a master's degree in mathematics from SUNY Albany, after which he served as Assistant Professor of Mathematics at SUNY Oneonta from 1957 until 1960. Jim attended the University of Colorado from 1960 until 1965 where he received a Ph.D. in mathematics and met his future wife Lee Chadbourne. Jim was Professor of Mathematics at SUNY Oswego from 1965 until his retirement in 1995. In addition to his passion for teaching mathematics, Jim was an avid vegetable gardener and a lover of classical music. He was a longtime supporter of both the Syracuse Symphony and the Oswego Opera. Jim spent many happy hours canoeing in Canada with his family and fellow mathematicians. He shared his lifelong love of the outdoors with his children, nieces and nephews at the family's summer cottage in Northern Ontario. Jim was predeceased by his sister Helen Burling Ottaway. He is survived by his wife Lee Chadbourne Burling of Oswego; his daughter Koren Burling and son-in-law Richard Smith of Wyoming; his son F. Temple Burling II and daughter-in-law Leslie Cameron of Wisconsin; his brother Robbins Burling of Michigan; and by his grandchildren, James Aidan, Chadbourne Marcus and Catherine Esme. Hill, Benjamin James July 7, 2005 Benjamin James Hill, 23, of 101 Woodbine, Avenue, Syracuse, and formerly of Main Street, Poland, died unexpectedly on July 7, 2005 at his residence in Syracuse, following a courageous struggle with Cystic Fibrosis. Benjamin was born in Mahattan, Kansas, on March 14, 1982, a son of Jonathan and Cynthia (Casper) Hill. He graduated from Poland Central School in 2000 and from LeMoyne College, Syracuse, with bachelor degrees in Psychology and Biology. Ben was recently accepted to study Environmental Law at Syracuse University in the fall. While enrolled at LeMoyne, Ben was actively involved with drama productions. He was currently working part-time as an assistant at the Mary Lou Corcoran Physical Therapy Center in Fayetteville. Survivors include his parents, Jon and Cindy, of Poland; one brother, Jonathan M. Hill, Jr. of New York City; maternal grandparents, William and Elizabeth Casper of the Town of Russia; paternal grandparents, Frank and Bernice Hill of Poland; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Smith, 70, of Central Square, died Thursday, July 7, 2005, at St. Joseph's Hospital, Syracuse, after a long illness. Born in Central Square, he had lived there his whole life as well as a few years in New Smyrna Beach, Fla. He was owner of Bob Smith Building Supply in Central Square for 30 years before retiring in 1990. Prior to that he was manager of Otto Supply, division of Syracuse Lumber Co. Bob was a graduate of Central Square High School and had attended St. Lawrence, Cortland State, Oswego and Florida State Universities. He was a U.S. Army veteran, a member of Fuller-Taylor American Legion Post #915 of Central Square, past member of Central Square Men's Golf League at Greenview Country Club, past president of the Central Square Athletic Booster Club, and a member of the P.V. Moore High School Sports Wall of Fame in basketball and football. Surviving are his wife of 46 years, the former Elizabeth (Bud) Oatman; a daughter, Cindy (David) Jeffries of Central Square; four sons, Robert (Linda) Smith and David (Melissa) Smith, both of Central Square, Mickey (Merry Chris) Smith of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., and Terry (Tracy) Smith of Lilburn, Ga.; a sister, Dorothy Fox of Mallory; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mary is survived by her husband of 47 years, Howard; a cousin, June Skinner of Williamstown; and several nieces and nephews.
