Calpeter, Mary July 9, 2005 Mary Calpeter, 95, died Saturday at Loretto Nursing Home. She was a resident of North Syracuse for the past 60 years and a former 15-year resident of Mattydale. She retired in 1970 after 15 years as a packer for Borden's Ice Cream, Syracuse (formerly Best Ice). She was an auxiliary member of the Edward Weaver VFW Post, N. Syracuse; a member of the Salina Civic Seniors; the St. Rose of Lima Senior Citizens; and was a communicant of St. Margaret's R.C. Church, Mattydale. Mrs. Calpeter was predeceased by her husband, Joseph, in 1981 and by her brother, Stanley Lenn of Syracuse. Surviving are her daughter, Jeanette Crandall of Hightstown, NJ; a son, Robert J. Calpeter of N. Goodband, Clayton B. July 7, 2005 Clayton B. Goodband, 57, of 38 Flat Iron Rd., Brooktondale, NY, died Thursday, July 7, 2005, at University Hospital, Syracuse, as the result of an automobile accident. Clayton, known as "Mike," was born June 14, 1948, in Ithaca, a son of Albert D. Goodband of Brooktondale and the late Eleanor H. Hotaling Goodband. Mike served honorably in the Vietnam War with the U.S. Marines from May 1968 to June 1969 and was decorated with several medals and awards, including four Bronze stars. He served in the Army reserves until March 28, 1993. He was employed at the Syracuse Regional Veterans Administration Hospital in Syracuse as a medical clerk for the last 12 years. His family is grateful for the support of his Syracuse VA family. He was a member of the NRA and was a member of the American Legion. Mike was an avid hunter and NASCAR race fan who enjoyed writing poetry, gardening, camping and spending time with his family. Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Doris Boynton Goodband of Brooktondale; his children, C. Gorman, 96, of St. Petersburg, FL, formerly of Pulaski, died Monday, July 4, in St. Petersburg. She was valedictorian of her high school class in Pulaski. She also graduated from Cornell University. She served in the U.S. Army from 1942-66, retiring as a colonel as the sixth director of the Women's Army Corps (WAC). She was also part of the Allied Control Government in Berlin after WWII. After her retirement from the Army, she worked for the newly formed Office of Economic Opportunity. She received the Distinguished Service Medal; she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma at Cornell. Emily was honored with a chair at the Women's Army Museum at Arlington National Cemetery. The money for the chair was raised by the village of Pulaski, to which former state Senator Douglas H. Barclay was an active contributor. She was a member of Robert Edwards Post #358 American Legion, Pulaski; a member of the Monday Historical Club; NOCA; and a volunteer at the Pulaski Public Library. Surviving are one niece, Nancy Gorman, St. Petersburg, FL; and four grandnephews. She is predeceased by one brother, Clarence J. Gorman, who was an Oswego County assistant district attorney. He died December 14, 1946. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, July 15, at Pulaski Congregational Church, with Rev. James Tschudy officiating. Pellegrino, Georgia June 21, 2005 Georgia Pellegrino, 72, of Naples, FL, died Tuesday, June 21, 2005, after a year-long battle with lung cancer. Born Georgia Rose, daughter of the late Abe and Esther Rose, she became Georgia Young after marrying the late William Young. Mrs. Pellegrino was born and raised in Syracuse and had lived in Westchester County for many years before retiring to Palm Desert, CA, in 1980, then moving to Naples, FL, in 1994. She is survived by her husband, Albert; children, Kevin (Allison) Young of Manassas, VA, and Hollie (Sohan Gambhir) Young of Newport Beach, CA; stepchildren: Tony (Rosemary) Pellegrino of New Fairfield, CT; Charles (Nancy) Pellegrino of Labertsville, NJ; James (Anne) Pellegrino of Charlotte, NC; and Elisa (Phil) Packard of Fort Wayne, IN; sister, Linda (Bill) Hershkowitz of Venice, FL; 17 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Purpura, Lucy July 10, 2005 Lucy Purpura, 73, of Wilson Dr., East Syracuse, died Sunday morning at her home, where she was under the care of Hospice. Mrs. Purpura owned and operated the Harbor Inn Restaurant in Henderson Harbor for 20 years. She had been a resident of East Syracuse for 42 years. She was born in Watertown on September 25, 1931, a daughter of Anthony and Josephine Puccia Palumbo, and was a graduate of Watertown High School. She married Frank Purpura. Mrs. Purpura is survived by three daughters: Paula Purpura, and her companion, Kris Biazzo; Maria and Terry White, all of Adams, NY; and Ann Marie and Scott Warner, East Syracuse; three grandchildren, Christina and Bryon French, Sackets Harbor; Teresa and Adam Brehm, NC; and Anthony White, Adams; a brother, Frank Palumbo, Washington, DC; four sisters: Rosalie Cavise, Andrianna Cavallario and Mrs. Raymond (Ann) Dorr, all of Watertown, and Mrs. James (Georgina) Pecori, North Syracuse; several nieces and nephews. He was a member of Sheet Metal Workers for 50 years, a communicant of St. James Church and its Holy Name Society, and also one of the first altar boys at St. James. Teles, Ida July 9, 2005 Ida Teles, 96, of Syracuse, passed away Saturday July 9, 2005, at the Jewish Home. Born in Syracuse on April 5, 1909, she was a lifetime resident. She was a longtime member of Temple Adath Yeshurun and the Temple seniors. She was honored for her years of service in the Ladies Auxiliary Post 131 of the Jewish War Veterans, where she had served as vice president and treasurer. For the past 50 years Mrs. Teles worked at the polls every election day, including 2004. She was predeceased in 1962 by her husband, George Teles. Survived by her loving son, Ronald Teles; sisters, Mollie Wertheim of Utica and Evelyn Fox of Pembroke Pines, Florida; stepgranddaughter, Elaine (Richard) Dallari of Long Island; also several loving nieces, nephews and caring friends. Zahm, Nancy Boggs July 6, 2005 Nancy Boggs Zahm passed away at the Nottingham Residential Care Health Facility on Wednesday. A lifelong Syracuse resident, she was born on March 4, 1918, to Thomas E. Boggs and Hilda (Weeks) Boggs. She was predeceased by her parents and her brother, Thomas E. Boggs Jr., formerly of Spartanburg, SC. In 1945, she married Anton Hier Zahm, a partner in the law firm of Bond, Schoeneck & King. He died in 1984. She is survived by their two children, Eric Hier Zahm, who resides in South Hadley, MA, with his wife Barbara, and Linda Zahm Buxton, who resides in Bristol, VT, with her husband Edward. Nancy also leaves behind four grandchildren, Joshua Buxton, Breanna Buxton, Marlena Zahm and Kathryn Zahm. Nancy was a life member of St. Alban's Episcopal Church and its Saint Margaret's Guild. She was an honored past president of both the Garden Center Association of CNY and the Onondaga Garden Club. She was also a member and held offices in the Sherman Park Garden Club. Nancy was also active in the National Cathedral Association, a member of the Canal Museum's Weighlock Guild, and the Corinthian Club. She and her husband were also avid Syracuse University sport fans and members of the Orange Pack. Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday in St. Alban's Episcopal Church, with a gathering of friends and family immediately following in the Fellowship Room.
