Upon graduation, he served in the U.S. Army during the 2nd World War and participated in the invasion of Normandy. After the war he then worked for 33 years with New York Telephone as a teletype specialist. He was also a communicant of St. Therese Church. He was born in Rochester and lived in Syracuse most of his life. Gerald was formerly employed by Continental Can Co. for 19 years and Acme Metal Prod-ucts. He was a Navy veteran of both WW II and the Korean War. He was a lifetime member of the Pastime Athletic Club. Gerald enjoyed vacationing with his family on Wolfe Lake in Westport, Ontario. He also enjoyed fishing and was an avid New York Yankees fan. His wife, Elinor Maresca Cyr, died in January and daughter, Deborah Cyr Myers, died in 1998. Born in Troy, she was a former resident of Buffalo, Niagara Falls, and Syracuse. She received her BA in Education from SUNY at Oneonta, her MA in Counseling from Syracuse University, her CAS in Educational Administration from SUNY Oneonta, and her Doctorate in Educational Organization and Administrative Policy from the University of Buffalo. She began her professional career in the Syracuse City Schools as an elementary school teacher and continued as an administrator, curriculum coordinator, and affirmative action officer for the Niagara Falls Board of Education. She founded Southside Preparatory Association, Inc. in Syracuse. She was co-founder of Niagara Movement Coordinating Committee, served as president of Niagara Community Center & Girl's Club, and served on the Board of International Magnet Schools. She was the founder and president of Niagara Alliance of Black School Educators and also founded the NY State Alliance of Black School Educators. Niagara Falls dedicated November 1, 1999 as "Dr. Gloria Fuller-Kimbrough Day". She was a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Gamma Phi Omega Chapter where she held many offices. Hammerle, Christie Cunningham Hammerle July 10, 2005 Christie Cunningham Hammerle, 89, of Syracuse, passed away Sunday evening in the Crouse Hospital of Syracuse. Born in Buffalo on October 5, 1915, Christie was the daughter of David (Chris) and Ora (Hatt) Cunningham. Growing up in the Syracuse area, she was a graduate of Central High School and earned her master's degree in business education at Syracuse University. Christie was married to Alan Hammerle, who passed away in November of 1982. Christie taught for a time at the Percy Hughes School and the Nottingham High School, both in Syracuse. Following her teaching career, she became the head accountant and bookkeeper for her family-run business called Economy Book Store of Syracuse, which she sold in 1987. A spirited lady who didn't like to let her passport sit idle, Christie had traveled the world over several times and savored every trip. She was also a very devoted member of the Reformed Presbyterian Church on South Salina Street. She was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, George (Jug) in 2000, and her brothers, Stephen, John (Doc), Robert and Andrew Haddock. She is survived by her son, Jack (Sherry) VanHoesen of East Syracuse; daughter, Pat (Tim) Sullivan of Tully; eight grandchildren, Tim (Emily) Sullivan of Westport, CT, Jim Sullivan of Providence, RI, Mike Sullivan, USN of LeMoore, CA, Kelly (Peter) Reppenhagen of Tully, Colleen (Bobby) Gambitta of Cortland, Jeff (Chris) VanHoesen of Birdsboro, PA, Eric VanHoesen of San Diego, CA, and Steven VanHoesen of Cold Water, MI; four great-grandchildren, Erin and Sara Reppenhagen, Connor and Reese Sullivan; four sisters-in-law; several cousins, nieces and nephews. Topp July 10, 2005 Patricia M. Topp Virag, 54, beloved wife, mother, daughter, and sister, died Sunday, July 10, 2005, at Rex Hospital in Raleigh, NC, with her husband, son and future daughter-in-law at her side. Born on December 23, 1950, she had been a lifelong resident of Syracuse, NY, and moved to NC on May 25, 2005. Patricia graduated from Corcoran High School and then proceeded on to Syracuse Beauty School where she became a hairdresser, and served as such for several years, before "retiring" from that to be a full-time wife, mother, and hairdresser to the family. She was an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys and NY Mets. Surviving: her loving husband of 32 years, John T. "Jack" Virag; son, Daniel W. Virag and future daughter-in-law, Erin Schuster, of NC; stepchildren, John C. Virag and his wife Nadina of Jamesville, Sheila K. Virag of Syracuse; mother, Nancy Topp Miller of Syracuse; sister, Nancy Topp Morrison of Syracuse; brothers, William R. Topp and his wife Holly of Skaneateles, Peter D. Topp of Arizona; grandchildren, Shana Beth, John C. Jr., Ryan and Evan Virag; step-grandchildren, Josh and Ashley Littleboy; several cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends. Born in Newfoundland, Canada, he resided in Otisco Valley prior to moving to Skaneateles. He was a veteran of the Canadian Air Force. He was employed at the Cates farm in Otisco Valley and retired custodian with the Marcellus School District. Born in Ira, NY, he lived most of his life in Liverpool before moving to Constantia a year ago. Mr. Wiggins retired in 1989 as an Accountant with General Electric after 30 years of service. He was a college graduate of St. Lawrence University and was a retired Lt. Col. with the U.S. Army Reserves. Carl is survived by his former wife, Barbara Wiggins; three daughters, Deborah Schroeder of Phoenix, AZ, Lynne Wiggins of Baldwinsville, and Karen Scott of Constantia; one son, Richard Wiggins of Binghamton; a sister, Sylvia Lee of Liverpool; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and his cat, Baxter. Zahm, Nancy Boggs July 6, 2005 Nancy Boggs Zahm passed away at the Nottingham Residential Care Health Facility on Wednesday. A lifelong Syracuse resident, she was born on March 4, 1918, to Thomas E. Boggs and Hilda (Weeks) Boggs. She was predeceased by her parents and her brother, Thomas E. Boggs Jr., formerly of Spartanburg, SC. In 1945, she married Anton Hier Zahm, a partner in the law firm of Bond, Schoeneck & King. He died in 1984. She is survived by their two children, Eric Hier Zahm, who resides in South Hadley, MA, with his wife Barbara, and Linda Zahm Buxton, who resides in Bristol, VT, with her husband Edward. Nancy also leaves behind four grandchildren, Joshua Buxton, Breanna Buxton, Marlena Zahm and Kathryn Zahm. Nancy was a life member of St. Alban's Episcopal Church and its Saint Margaret's Guild. She was an honored past president of both the Garden Center Association of CNY and the Onondaga Garden Club. She was also a member and held offices in the Sherman Park Garden Club. Nancy was also active in the National Cathedral Association, a member of the Canal Museum's Weighlock Guild, and the Corinthian Club. She and her husband were also avid Syracuse University sport fans and members of the Orange Pack. Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday in St. Alban's Episcopal Church, with a gathering of friends and family immediately following in the Fellowship Room. Burial will be at Oakwood Morningside Cemetery.
