Amish, Kenneth S. July 1, 2005 Kenneth S. Amish, 97, of Hackett Hill Rd., Manchester, NH, formerly of 100 Circle Rd. in Syracuse, died Friday, July 1, 2005, following a period of declining health. Born on the family farm in Ogden, NY, on August 30, 1907, he was the son of the late Louis and Lavina (Miller) Amish. Mr. Amish was a 1927 graduate of the Brockport Normal School of Brockport, NY. He was a 1931 graduate of the Maxwell School at Syracuse University, where he was an active member of Delta Kappa Epsilon (DKE) fraternity. After graduation he worked for the W.T. Grant Co. in New York City and later managed their store in Chambersburg, PA, where he met and married his wife of 57 years, Marie (Schaff) Amish, who died October 24, 1995. In 1945, he returned to Syracuse and founded Upstate Distributors, Inc., which supplied appliances and merchandise to stores in central New York for 30 years. After selling his majority ownership of Upstate Distributors, Mr. Amish owned and operated the L.J. Kelsey Paint Company of Syracuse, NY, for 15 years. Mr. Amish created a financial need-based scholarship in April of 2000 at DKE to be awarded annually to a student who exhibits a heightened sense of spirit and commitment to the brotherhood of the chapter. He remained loyal, involved and supportive of both Syracuse University and DKE. He was also an active member of the Syracuse Rotary and remained an active senior member into his early 90's. He was a Paul Harris Fellow and established Paul Harris fellowships in his wife Marie's name and those of his children. After retiring to Greenville, SC, he remained active in the small business community by becoming an accredited representative of the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) program, providing start up help to local business entrepreneurs. He maintained his ties to Syracuse by spending summers at the family cottage near the old Selkirk Lighthouse on Lake Ontario, and he made a point of staying into early fall to cheer on the S.U. football team. "Ken" was loving and loyal to family and friends, respectful of the environment and nature, quick to "kid around" for a laugh, and filled with a need to be busy. He took advantage of every opportunity to pass on those values to each person he met, but especially to his children and grandchildren. He will be remembered as a true gentle man and for the vigor with which he lived the gift of life. Members of his family include a son and his wife, Peter and Lynn Amish; a daughter and her husband, Becky and Doug Morse a daughter, Gaye Korbet; five grandsons, Jon and his wife Vivian Nielson, Steve Amish and his wife Sally Painter, Scott and his wife Cece Morse, David and his wife Kathy Amish, and Mike and his wife AnnMarie Amish; six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was employed by the Onondaga County Dept. of Social Services for 30 years, retiring in 1973. She was predeceased by her husband Clarence in 1979, and two brothers, Nicholas and Alfred DiStaola. She was a native and life resident of the area. For the past 25 years she resided at L-151 Centerville Court, North Syracuse. She was employed at Lamson Cor-poration and then Diebold Co. where she worked for nearly 50 years. She later volunteered at Community General Hospital for another 10 years, retiring when she was 80 years old. She was an active member of the Atonement Lutheran Church of Syracuse for over 80 years. Auntie Helen was a very devoted and loving Aunt to several generations of young people in the family and to many others she came in contact with during her long, productive life. She was an exemplary example of kindness, love and generosity. She was predeceased by her brother Vernon H. Busher in 1939 and a sister Mildred Kelly Crego in 1995. She is survived by two nieces: Carol Falise of No. Syracuse, and Nancy Taylor of Owasco; a nephew John Kelly and his wife Bonnie of Marcellus. She also had 10 great nieces and nephews: Brian (Kristen) of Mattydale, Joey (Lenore) of Florida, Ronald (Lisa) of Syracuse, and Timothy (Karen) Falise and Caitlin, Megan, Molly, Neil, Paul and Sarah Kelly. Casa, Elizabeth July 8, 2005 Elizabeth Casa, age 84, of Walnut Street Extension, Auburn, NY, passed peacefully into eternal rest on Friday, July 8, 2005, at home with her beloved family by her side. She was born in Auburn to Dominick and Michelina Palermiti, both of whom were natives of Italy. She lived most of her life in Auburn, but also spent time in Chicago when her husband attended school. She also lived in Germany for a year with her husband and children in the early 1960's. Liz, as she was known, was an exceptional student and graduated from both Auburn High School and Auburn Business School. She spent most of her career working in Auburn. She began by helping her parents at their store, Palermiti Grocery, at 132 Clark Street. She also worked at Firth Carpet in Auburn. Most of Elizabeth's career, however, was spent at the administrative office of the Auburn Enlarged City School District, where she was the personal assistant to Paul Kleiber, who became the longtime superintendent of schools. Later she worked for several years as the legal secretary to Richard Malcolm, Esq. She was predeceased by her parents and by her two brothers, Leo Palermiti, M.D., and Frank Palermiti, Ph.D. Liz is survived by her husband of 59 years, Thomas Casa of Auburn, and two children, Michele (Robert) Allan of Skaneateles, NY, and Michael (Ruby) Casa of Johns Island, South Carolina. "Gram", as she became known, had five grandchildren and one great-grandson, all of whom she loved, cared for, and respected deeply. Her grandchildren include Michael Allan, Esq. of Alexandria, Virginia, Elizabeth (Edward) Moro and Katharine Allan of Skaneateles, NY, and M. Jacob (Tammy) Casa and Alexandra Casa of Charleston, South Carolina. Her great-grandchild is Alexander Moro of Skaneateles, NY. Liz was famous for her love of old movies, trivial pursuit games, and her amazing culinary skills. She was beautiful, decent, honest, caring, and she doted on her family. She conducted herself with a sense of grace and elegance and infused a sense of calm and love in all those who encountered her. Even in her last days she had a smile and a word of encouragement for those around her. For all that Liz was, she will best be remembered for her absolute commitment and devotion to her children and grandchildren. She brought her family's history into the present so that each of her descendants knew that they were part of a much larger family. To all who knew her, she was unforgettable. Celke, 93, died Wednesday at James Square Nursing Home where he was under the care of Hospice of CNY. He was a longtime resident of the Valley area on the south side of Syracuse. He spent 51 years as an executive in the bus transportation industry, first with the Greyhound Corp., and later with Syracuse & Oswego Coach Lines. He was a member of the original group that founded and established the Intercity Bus Association of New York State and served as its president from 1952-1959. He retired in 1980. He will be forever remembered for his great love and devotion to his family and friends as well as a lifetime of dedicated service to the Syracuse community. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 65 years, Zena A. Celke, in 1999. Survivors include his son, Erick M. Celke of Syracuse; his daughter, Alexandra C. Erkenbeck, James F. June 15, 2005 James F. Erkenbeck, 56, of Lake City, FL, formerly of East Syracuse passed away on Wednesday, June 15, 2005, in Florida after a long illness. James was the son of the late Donald and Ida Erkenbeck of E. Syracuse. Jim served honorably in the Marine Corps and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a brakeman for the railroad before retiring after 25 years of service. He had previously been employed by the N. Syracuse School District as a part-time bus driver and he was also employed by the Village of E. Syracuse before moving to Florida. Surviving are his three children; Marie (John) Stoutland of PA, Garrett and Emily Erkenbeck, of E. Guszcza, John July 7, 2005 John Guszcza, 77, of Standart Woods Apartments, died unexpectedly Thursday, July 7, 2005, at his home. Born in Auburn, the son of the late Konstantine and Julia Sroczyk Guszcza, he was a resident of Central New York all his life. He received hisbachelor's degree from Syracuse University and his master's degree from SUNY Albany. He also earned an administrative certificate from SUNY. John had a long-standing interest in history, classical music, and European culture. He was both a Marine Corps and Army veteran, serving in the military from 1945 to 1946 and 1952 to 1955. John was a member of the First Marine Association, the V.F.W. and the American Legion. John had a long and distinguished career at the Syracuse School District, where he was liked and respected by colleagues and students alike. He began as a history teacher, became a guidance counselor, and eventually rose to the position of administrator of the Schools' vocational program. Surviving are his sons, James of California and Joseph of Weedsport; his former wife, Helen Sue Guszcza of Weedsport; three brothers, Joseph of Lowville, NY, Walter of Texas, and Bernard and his wife, Hui Cha, of Oneonta; two sisters, Mary Antonucci and her husband, Frank of Oneonta and Victoria Kyrtak of Auburn; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews. A Syracuse native educated in dentistry, he pursued various talents including a profound interest in New York State history with special focus on the Erie Canal, its boats, and theirconstruction. A practicing dentist, published author, artist and photographer , he served during WWII, joining the National Guard and later the U.S. Army Reserve earning the rank of Lt. Col. After retirement in 1976, his volunteer spirit kept him active as a teacher of dental hygiene at Onondaga Community College and member of the Onondaga Historical Association. The canal boat displayed at the Erie Canal Museum in Syracuse, NY was crafted from his research and design along with other models scattered the length of the Mohawk River, Erie Canal, and the Blackstone Canal in Oxbridge, MA. His legacy and love of history lives on at the Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum. This developing project stands as a tribute to his perseverance and vision as a founding member. Their Historical Library has been named in his honor. Bob is survived by wife of 64 years, Barbara (L. Bliss) Hager; two daughters, Lucia Strasburg and husband, Frederick of Ashland, Oregon, Linda Older and husband, David of Norwich, NY; and son, Robert E. Marcellina enjoyed cooking for everyone, and traveling to Las Vegas with her friends. Her grandchildren and great-granddaughter were the light of her life. She was a member of Church at the Cross Roads in Cicero. During the 1970's and 1980's she was active with the Town of Cicero Young at Heart Seniors. Eva sang with the Cicero Choralier's Choir and was a member of the Cicero Grange and the Central Square Seniors. She was predeceased by her husband, George in 1976 and by her son, Robert in 2004. Maroney, 86, of Camillus, died at his home. Born in Syracuse, Vincent attended Most Holy Rosary School and was a former communicant of Most Holy Rosary Church. He was a Sergeant in WWII serving in New Guinea and received the Medal of Good Conduct. He worked for the New York Central Railroad for 30 years before moving in 1971 to Blythe, CA and then to Richland, WA where he worked in construction. He then retired to Kingman, AZ, returning to Syracuse with his wife Esther in 1989. He was predeceased by his wife Esther in 1996. Anthony was a steel worker for Goulds Pump, retiring in 1985. He was a communicant of St. Daniel's Church. An avid car enthusi-ast, Anthony was a member of the Prison City Ramblers Car Club. He was affiliated with the Right Coast Association/Syracuse National since its inception in 2000. A true gentleman, Anthony was admired for his perseverance, and above all, will be remembered for his kindness and generosity. Shirley was a very ambitious and productive woman for most of her life.She co-owned Sherry's Fabric Store in Bridgeport with her sister-in-law, Terry Young, who she is now with. She owned Shirley's Diner in Jamesville and Shirley's Diner on Rt. 31 Canastota. We have missed this Shirley for a few years now but she will be forever in our hearts. She may have been petite in size but she was enormous in courage and strength. She never complained or asked "why me?". She just accepted what was and did the best that she could.
