Born in Syracuse on January 2, 1912, to David F. and Lena (Carlisle) Costello. David F. Costello was one of the founding partners of the Syracuse Law Firms of Costello, Cooney, and Fearon. Mary Frances Costello married Charles S. Allen on September 9, 1939, in Syracuse. They were the parents of six children. Predeceased by her husband and son Charles Ellery Allen. After retirement she and her husband Charles became expert weavers, producing many beautiful woven products. Their hobby grew into a small business called Warp and Weave. Survived by her children: David (Mary) Allen of Fayetteville; Daniel (Joan Kolp) Allen of Oswego; Marjory (George) Perez of Lyons; Joanna (Archie) Nelson and Laura (Thomas) Donovan both of Oswego. Ten grandchildren, Julie Cecile, Kathleen Allen, Matthew Allen, Andrew Allen, Christopher Nelson, Jennifer James, Jennifer Lavan, Mary Donovan, Mark Donovan, Heather Ainsworth, and 11 great-grandchildren. He enlisted in the Navy during WWII and served in Pacific Theatre and the Japanese Occupation. He retired at age 70 as a self-employed electrician and had worked at General Electric 22 years,and 2 years, at Carrier. He was a member of the American Legion, the 40 & 8, the VFW, and the Cleveland Fire Department. He also served as a leader of the Boy Scouts of America. He was named VFW Citizen of the year in 1977. Gilbert, 71 of North Syracuse passed away Saturday at her home after a courageous battle with cancer. A life resident of the Syracuse area and a graduate of Assumption School, she was a member of the Cicero Senior Center Young at Hearts Club. She is predeceased by her husband Robert S. Gilbert (1987) and a brother John Wilhelm. She is survived by one son, Robert B. (Marjorie) Gilbert; two daughters, Justine P. Mereness, 83, of East Syracuse , died Saturday, July 16, 2005, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Syracuse. Mr. Mereness began working with his father in the Mereness Funeral Home in Cobleskill, NY. He owned and operated this business from 1950 until retiring in 1990. Mr. Mereness married Hazel M. Osterhout on Dec. 20, 1946, who passed away Sept. 13, 1993, and later married Elizabeth (Betty) Keddie Bard of East Syracuse on June 3, 1998. In addition he is survived by four children, Penny (Alan) Linck, Queensbury, NY, Margaret (John) Collins, East Greenbush, NY, David O. Mereness (Maureen), Castleton-on-Hudson, NY, and Lori (Harry) Tomlinson, Sharon Springs, NY; seven grandchildren, Nathan, Jared, and Darren (Jamie) Linck, Sean Collins and Brian , Paul, and Brenna Mereness; one sister, Agnes R. Mereness, Unadilla, NY; one brother, Fenton R. He was born in San Francisco, California, and grew up in Brooklyn, New York. He served in the Army during the Korean War. In 1960 hegraduated from Manhattan College. He moved to Syracuse in 1962 to work for General Electric and also worked for Syracuse University Research Corporation. In 1997 he retired from Inficon Inc. During retirement, he worked part time for Two Plus Four Management Company. He was an active member of Holy Cross Church. Surviving are his wife of 40 years, Nancy; his daughter Cathy Reid and her husband Joe, of Carlsbad, California, and grandsons Finn and Owen Reid. Turtura, Richard July 15, 2005 Richard Turtura, 79, a native of Mattydale, NY, longtime resident of Liverpool, NY, and resident in Poquoson the past several months, died Friday, July 15, 2005 at the V.A. Medical Center Hospice in Hampton, VA. He was member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Liverpool; and a WWII Army veteran, serving in Africa, Italy, France, Germany, and Austria, earning three purple hearts. He retired from Syracuse Cold Storage after 45 years, and later retired from Onondaga County Public Utilities. He was a 50 year VFW member, and was an avid hunter and outdoorsman. Mr. Turtura was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara; his parents, Grace & James Turtura; and siblings, Edna, Lena, Josephine, Joseph, Ralph, Mary, Virginia, Richard, Grace, James, and Robert. He is survived by two sons, John Turtura & fiance, Marge Snyder of Michigan, and Richard Turtura & wife, Rose of Oregon; one daughter, Mary Lindberg & husband, Jim of Poquoson; a brother, Roger Turtura & wife, Helen of New York; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and god-children; and many dear friends and neighbors. July 14, 2005 John C. Woodruff, 74, of Olive Branch, MS, formerly of Fabius, NY, died Thursday, July 14, 2005, at Baptist Memorial Hospital, Desoto. Mr. Woodruff was born in Duluth, MN, and was a former dairy farmer in central New York. He also worked with the Fabius Pompey School District and the LaFayette Central School District, both in New York, and the Desoto Central School District in Mississippi. He was a judge for the American Quarter Horse Association, the American Paint Horse Association, and the Appaloosa Horse Association, and was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Korean Conflict. Mr. Woodruff, the husband of Patricia Woodruff, also leaves four daughters, Tracey Riva of Olive Branch, Julie Miller of Ft. Myers, FL, Lori Lantz of Fremont, MI, and Jennifer Burton of Grays Lake, IL; two sons, Douglas Woodruff of Camillus, NY, and Christopher Woodruff of Ocala, FL; one sister, Nance Kreidler of Duluth, MN; nine grandchildren; and 12 nieces and nephews. Young, Shirley Ann (La Plante) Young July 11, 2005 Shirley Ann Young, born May 8, 1936, passed on July 11, 2005, to be with her sister, brothers, mother, father and friends, where there is no fear, no sadness and no illness. Shirley was a very ambitious and productive woman for most of her life.She co-owned Sherry's Fabric Store in Bridgeport with her sister-in-law, Terry Young, who she is now with. She owned Shirley's Diner in Jamesville and Shirley's Diner on Rt. 31 Canastota. We have missed this Shirley for a few years now but she will be forever in our hearts. She may have been petite in size but she was enormous in courage and strength. She never complained or asked "why me?". She just accepted what was and did the best that she could. Shirley is survived by her husband of 51 years Fred Young of Canastota; her children, Paula (Mark) Robinson of Bridgeport, Sheila (Paul Almond) Young of Canastota, Brett (Kathy) Young of Canastota and Fred (Nicole) Young of Canastota, six grandchildren, Michelle Pooley, Jamie Robinson, Kimberly DeGrazia, Christina DeGrazia, Alexandria Young and Spencer Young.
