July 16, 2005 Dr. Carl Oscar Anderson, 87, resident of Fayetteville since 1949, passed away Saturday, July 16, 2005. He was born on July 7, 1918, in East Hampton, Long Island, the only child of Oscar Herman Anderson and Marie Amelia (Johnson) Anderson, who had emigrated to the United States from Sweden in the early 1900's. Carl graduated from East Hampton High School in 1935 and attended Syracuse University where he earned his B.S. in 1939 and M.S. in 1940. From 1940 to 1942, he taught science and mathematics at Peru NY Central School and Radar Maintenance under the Government Electronics Defense Training Program. While teaching in Peru, he met Gladys L. Davison, the daughter of Samuel and Mary (Sartwell) Davison, and later married on September 19, 1942. In 1942, Carl entered the Army Signal Corps as a Radar Engineer and attended the British College of Science in advanced radar engineering. He then was assigned to London and was in charge of the radar defenses of London, north of the Thames River. After returning to the United States, he served the rest of WWII in the Air Force at Drew Field in Tampa, FL, and Camp Pinedale in Fresno, CA, as an Electronics Specialist Air Inspector Officer. After his discharge as a captain at the end of the war, Carl took advantage of the GI Bill to attend the University of Buffalo Dental School from which he graduated with the highest honors in 1949. He set up his private practice at 304 S. Manlius St. in Fayetteville in December of 1949 and continued in this profession until his retirement in October of 1998. During his career, Carl was a member of the American Dental Society, NYS Dental Society, Fifth District Dental Society, Onondaga County Dental Society and the Syracuse Dental Study Group. Carl had a lifelong enthusiasm for boating and learning "the ropes" on Long Island Sound as a teenager which served him well as his family shared his interest on Oneida Lake and for 44 years in the Thousand Islands. Carl was a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary and the U.S. Power Squadron. Through the years Carl was also a member of the United Church of Fayetteville, the Lions Club and the American Legion. Survivors: his wife Gladys of Manlius; a son, David Anderson of Fairbanks, AK; four generations of nieces and nephews and many cousins living throughout the country. July 17, 2005 William R. Arman, 68, of Pompey, died Sunday at his home. Born in Syracuse, William lived most of his life in Pompey. He retired in 1999 from Crucible Specialty Metals. Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Carol; his daughters, Cynthia Arman of Rindge, NH, Patricia Brickman (Paul) of Weston, MA, and Deborah Arman of Manlius; his grandson, Benjamin Fisher of Weston, MA; and his brother-in-law, Joseph Krause of Fayetteville. Malvasi, 85, of Liverpool, a lifetime Syracuse resident, passed away Sunday in the James Square Health & Rehabilitation Center. He was born in Syracuse and served with the U.S. Army during WWII. He was a member of the Lincoln Republican Club and the Old Newsboys Club. He was also an avid fundraiser who participated in many charities. Peter was a distribution manager with the Herald Journal for over 25 years and then retired from the Onondaga County Department of Social Services after 25 years. Peter was a devoted and beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, and a die-hard New York Yankees fan. He touched many lives and will be deeply missed. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marie Grace (Manzi) Malvasi; a daughter, Evelyn (John) Nelson of Baldwinsville; a son, Robert P. He moved to Syracuse in 1962 to work for General Electric and also worked for Syracuse University Research Corporation. In 1997 he retired from Inficon Inc. During retirement, he worked part time for Two Plus Four Management Company. He was an active member of Holy Cross Church. Robinson, Alayna Nicole July 14, 2005 Alayna Nicole Robinson, 11, departed this earthly life too soon on July 14, 2005, near her home in Cortland, New York. Alayna was born May 25, 1994, in Syracuse, NY. Three years ago she moved to Cortland with her family. She loved school and was very involved as an Honors student at Barry Elementary, recently completing the fifth grade. She participated in band, chorus, basketball, Girl Scouts, and cheerleading. She recently won the TEAM Award for Tolerance. Alayna's interests included reading, swimming, horses, and activities at both the Cortland Youth Bureau and her church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was a loving and caring big sister, as well as a dear daughter. Alayna had friends everywhere and she will be sorely missed by many, but most of all by her family; to them she was an angel and a princess, and forever will be. Young, Shirley Ann (La Plante) Young July 11, 2005 Shirley Ann Young, born May 8, 1936, passed on July 11, 2005, to be with her sister, brothers, mother, father and friends, where there is no fear, no sadness and no illness. Shirley was a very ambitious and productive woman for most of her life.She co-owned Sherry's Fabric Store in Bridgeport with her sister-in-law, Terry Young, who she is now with. She owned Shirley's Diner in Jamesville and Shirley's Diner on Rt. 31 Canastota. We have missed this Shirley for a few years now but she will be forever in our hearts. She may have been petite in size but she was enormous in courage and strength. She never complained or asked "why me?". She just accepted what was and did the best that she could.
