Cohen, Lillian Alper July 21, 2005 Lillian lived and loved life to the fullest until her death in Peabody, MA on July 21, 2005. As one of six children born to Rose & Max Alper of Gloucester, Mass., Lillian graduated from Simmons College, married and moved to Syracuse where she wasactive in many local civic organizations while earning a masters degree in education at Syracuse University at the age of 47. She worked as a career skills teacher in the Syracuse City Schools until her mid 70's. Since then, she has continued to teach and to entertain older adults (with her dynamic piano sing-a-longs) until her final weeks. She was a lifelong active member at Temple Adath Yeshurun. Lillian was a woman of great exuberance, compassion, faith and wisdom who celebrated life each day. Her greatest joys were her family and friends. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. As the wife of the late dentist, Dr. Edward Cohen for 59 years, she is survived by her four children: Ms. Sandra Levitt of Falmouth, MA, Dr. Paul S. Duecker, Douglas "Duke" Winston Duecker July 6, 2005 Major Douglas "Duke" Duecker, a native of Liverpool, NY, stationed at Fort Drum in Watertown, NY, passed away July 6, 2005, while on a special training assignment at Fort Belvoir, VA. Major Duecker had enlisted in the Army in 1989. He then was selected for OTS. After several promotions and completing Ranger training, he received his most recent promotion to Major. Major Duecker did a tour in Kuwait and another in Iraq. Before he started his Army career, "Duke" had completed several years of college and studies in classical guitar at Palomino College in CA. He was an avid player and fan of all forms of music. His father, Donald L. Duecker, preceded Major Duecker in death. Garlock, William L. March 22, 2005 William L. "Bill" Garlock, 61, died March 22, 2005, at his home in Cape Coral, FL. Son of the late Lester and Charlotte (Hubbard) Garlock, he was born September 20, 1943, in Syracuse, NY. Bill was very active in community theatre while residing in upstate, NY, performing with the Pompeian Players and later performing with and directing the Oswego Players. He moved to Cape Coral in 1982, to escape the cold, after a career as New Business Supervisor at the home office of Farmers & Traders Life Insurance Co. in Syracuse. An accomplished epicurean, his favorite place was in front of the stove creating wonderful delights for all with whom his table was shared. He also had a special place in his heart for every canine he befriended. Bill is survived by his partner of 21 years, Dale A. She was born in Syracuse, NY and had been a resident of Cocoa Beach, FL, for the past 18 years. Marge graduated from Onondaga Valley Academy in 1950. She worked at General Electric, Agway, ESM High School and Minoa Elementary. Marge was an accomplished golfer at the Cocoa Beach Country Club. She was a past president of the Lady's 9 Hole group where she won the championship in 1991. She also played with the Lady's 18 Hole group where she was the treasurer. While a member, she shot a hole-in-one. Marge was also an avid bridge player and enjoyed over 20 cruises with her husband, traveling to the Caribbean Islands and Europe. Monteleone, Winifred Ilian June 29, 2005 Winifred Ilian Monteleone (Layo) died peacefully at her home in Annapolis, MD, with her daughters by her side. Ilian, also known as Winnie by her friends, was predeceased by her husband Anthony in Nov. 2000. During WWII Ilian was a longdistance telephone operator and recalled to her children how the entire switchboard lit up when news the war had ended was received. She also said that the operators would give servicemen calling home extra time to talk to their families. Ilian received training as an accountant and helped her husband start Syracuse Trailer Service. She also worked for Sylvania Electric for many years. Ilian was an avid gardener who received many awards for her flower arrangements. She was also a kind and gentle woman who quietly donated many hours to various charities. In 1970 she and her husband Tony retired to Santa Fe, NM, where they lived for 30 years. At age 70 Ilian decided a new career was in order so she joined the Mobil Travel Guide Company as an inspector of hotels and restaurants. She and Tony traveled throughout New Mexico inspecting businesses that sought to earn the coveted five star rating. She was very proud of the bonuses she received for the excellent quality of her work. Survivors include daughters, Lee Ann Moore of Severn, MD, and Toni Pat Tucci of East Syracuse. She also had five grandchildren, Scott and Stephen Moore, Kristin Brown, Courtney Angell and Christopher Tucci; and two great-grandchildren, Sarah Moore and Nathan Brown. Also surviving are three sisters and a number of nieces and nephews. At her request, she was cremated and her ashes scattered to the wind. Kay was a communicant of St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church. She was a memberof the Ossining Women's Club and volunteer at University Hospital for more than 20 years. She was also a volunteer for the American Red Cross and the Miracle Maker-Children of CNY. Her husband, Michael, died in June 2004. Tormay, Sr., 78, of The Nottingham, passed away Thursday at Francis House. A native of Plymouth, PA, he moved with his family to Syracuse in 1939. He lived in Westvale for 27 years before moving to the Nottingham two years ago.He graduated from Onondaga Valley Academy, received a degree in Journalism from Syracuse University in 1949, and received his law degree from the University of Baltimore. He began his career after his marriage at General Tire, Springfield, MA, became assistant to the president of St. Joseph's College, Emmitsburg, MD, and then became assistant to the president of Mount Providence Junior College, Baltimore, MD. He was appointed Commissioner for Housing and Community Affairs for the State of Vermont and returned to Syracuse as the Director of Community Relations for Niagara Mohawk, retiring in 1991. He was a communicant for many years of Holy Family Church, Fairmount and more recently of Holy Cross Church, DeWitt. He was corporate liaison to the Community Advisory Council of Niagara Mohawk. He was an accomplished writer and watercolor artist. He served in the Navy during WWII. Survivors: his wife of 53 years, the former Margaret Irving; three daughters, Katherine (John Jr.) Muller of St. Louis, MO, Dr. Margaret Tormay of Oak Park, IL, and Elizabeth Tormay of Dover, NH; a son, Edward F.
