Kearse, Helen (Hammer) Kearse July 21, 2005 Helen (Hammer) Kearse, wife of the deceased John M. Kearse, Sr., the former business manager of Binghamton State Hospital, died quietly after a heart attack earlier in the day. Until then, she continued to live on her own, in her own home, and to manage her own affairs with competence, brightness, humor, and fierce independence. She was 93. Her extraordinary gifts were partially reflected in her three children. Ed, Jack, and Pat, who among them combined to be a White House staffer, a District Attorney, a State Commissioner, a licensed Real Estate Broker, a licensed Insurance broker, a health care executive, and a successful local entrepreneur. Her seven living grandchildren: John, Brendan, Kirsten, Kevin, Patrick, Christopher, and Elizabeth, are in different stages of their careers in law, business, the arts, and entertainment, the older ones already with unusual successes. But Helen was the talent source, the center, the inspiration, the strength. She lived long and well, and died amidst her family. By the fullness of her life and the gracefulness of her death, we are deeply honored, sorely hurt, profoundly moved. Her daughters-in-law, Alice Olson Kearse, Christine Keegan Kearse, and the entire family are comforted with the certainty that now, with her parents, Grace and Edward Hammer, her husband, John, her daughter-in-law, Frani, and her grandchild, Allison, she lives brilliantly, exquisitely, and forever in God's light. Monday, she will be buried in the family plot at Calvary Cemetery, Queens, NY.
