"Sammy" Buckley, 72, of LaFayette, died Monday in Fayetteville, NC. Born in Jamesville, he was a life resident of LaFayette. He retired in December 2004 from New Process Gear following 54 years of service as a job setter. He was a member of the UAW Local 624 in East Syracuse and was a member of Onatavia United Methodist Church. Mr. Buckley was a true family man; he particularly enjoyed attending his grandson's baseball games. An avid outdoorsman, he also enjoyed gardening. Madey, Pauline Kozak July 28, 2005 Pauline Kozak Madey, 94, formerly of Dewitt, NY, and the Pavilion Assisted in Catskill, NY, died July 28, 2005, at Eden Park Nursing Home in Catskill. She was born October 15, 1918, in New York Mills, NY, the daughter of the late Peter and Bertha (Nowicki) Kozak. Pauline graduated magna cum laude at the age of 19 from the school of management at Syracuse University in 1930, with a bachelor of science degree. While a student, she was a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Beta Gamma Sigma and Pi Lambda Theta, all National Honor Societies. In 1938, she studied Polish language, history and culture at the Universities of Cracow, Warsaw and Posen in Poland on a scholarship from the Kosciuszko Foundation. In 1967, Pauline earned a bachelor of arts degree, cum laude, with a major in Russian at Syracuse University. Thereafter, she pursued graduate studies in Russian literature at the university. Pauline was employed at Syracuse University in several capacities a total of 38 years between 1930 and 1975, retiring from the position of associate director of International Admissions. In her last assignment, she traveled to Europe, the Middle East and South America, visiting international schools and recruiting foreign students for enrollment at Syrcuse University. She was proficient in several languages. During WWII, Pauline spent several years in the employ of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Albany and Syracuse and the American Embassy in Santiago, Chile. She was predeceased by her husband, Walter Madey, in 1978; a sister, Helen Kobielski; and three brothers, Emil Kozak, Norbert Kozak and Edmund Kozak. Mrs. Madey is survived by two sisters, Gertrude Lynch of Catskill and Stephany Steck of Elm Grove, WI; an aunt, Stephany Nowicki of New York Mills, NY; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Schmidt was born in Pittsburgh, PA, the son of the late George and Ruth Cooper Schmidt of Fulton, NY. He worked as a designer for Precision Tool and Die from 1945 to 1959 and was also a design engineer at General Motors in Massena from 1959 to 1976. Burton was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, serving from 1940 to 1945 and fighting in the Pacific Theater in WWII. Mr. Schmidt was also a member and secretary treasurer of the Lakeside Fire Department in Lakeland and a member of the Helena Fire Department in Helena, NY. Burton also enjoyed hunting and fishing. Schmitt, George Sax July 27, 2005 George Sax Schmitt, 72, died peacefully in his sleep on July 27 after radiation for cancer and the long aftermath. He was the son of Frank and Esther Sax Schmitt, born on August 10, 1932. George graduated from North High School and Le-Moyne College and did graduate work at Syracuse University. He served in the U.S. Navy, both as an enlisted man and as an officer in the Korean War. His true love was the entertainment business, and he had been involved in helping talented performers both here and in England. George is survived by his sister, Mary K. Stone, and her husband, Ford E. Stone, of Manistee, Michigan; six nieces; and two nephews and their children. He is also survived by the many dear friends he had made and treasured in his life. Harriet enjoyed spending time fishing and gardening at the family camp on Oneida Lake. She was a great baker and was known for her wonderful pies. Her husband, Stanley, passed away in January. July 28, 2005 Rose E. Smith, 84, of Syracuse, passed away Thursday, July 28. Born in Syracuse, she attended Sacred Heart School and was a lifelong communicant of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. During the Depression, she was a painter at Syra-cuse China. Later she worked at Smorol's, King Labs, GE and Hygrade's. With Rose, everyone was just as good as anyone else--unless proven otherwise. She was tolerant of others but demanding of attention to what she considered appropriate. You always knew where you stood with her. While her son was in the U.S. Navy, she traveled to California for her Grand beer, Bingo and Bowling Tour, Iceland, France and Austria--always eager to be back home on Spencer Street at the house she lived in intermittently since 1927. He was a local builder in Syracuse for over 50 years. He was a member of Carpenters Local 747, 3rd Ward Men's Club, Amos Park Committee, a communicant of Our Lady of Pompei Church and also a member of the Holy Name Society. Richard is predeceased by his parents, Raffaele and Maria Tortora, and his brothers, James, Frank, Vincent, Ralph and Alexander. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Rita Dalonzo Tortora; sons, Richard (Nancy) of Connecticut, David (Rosemarie) of Syracuse; daughter, Rita (Douglas) Fox of Liverpool; three grandchildren, Jeffrey, Alexandra and Eric, all of whom will sadly miss him; brothers, Anthony (Chancy), Patrick (Sue); sister, Mary (Carmen) Surace; sisters-in-law, Frances, Rita, Mary and Anne Tortora and Norma Panciera; brothers-in-law, Richard (Frances) and John Dalonzo; and several nieces and nephews. He was a life resident of the Central Square area. He was a driver for Tri-State Auto in Cicero for 17 years and had previously worked at Penn-Central Railroad for 20 years. He also was previous owner of Woody's Cycle Shop in Central Square and was a member of the International Dressers Association. He was predeceased by his parents, Romain Jr. and Ora Wood. Surviving are a daughter, Debbie Hacker of West Monroe; a son, David (Janice) of Phoenix; a brother, Carl of Central Square; two grandchildren, Kasey Ebert and Katey Hacker; and one great-grandchild, Trevor Ebert.
