June 3, 2005 Bruce W. Barkley, 55, of Camillus, died Friday at home. A native of Gouverneur, he was a longtime resident of the Syracuse/Camillus area. He was employed as the service manager of Charette Brothers for the past 17 years. He was the drum-mer with the band "The Outsiders," having a number-one hit called "Time Won't Let Me," and was a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio. He was a member of St. Michael's Lutheran Church. He was an avid moose figurine collector. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Surviving are his wife of nine years, the former Lynn Langworthy; a son, Nicholas Barkley of Camillus; a daughter, Kimberly Barkley-Edwards of San Antonio, TX; a brother, Herbert Barkley of Camillus; three sisters: Betty Whalen of Camillus, and Faye Lockwood and Linda Syrek, both of Gouverneur; and his mother-in-law, Katherine Langworthy of Camillus. Buck, 71, of Plymouth Ave., Mattydale, died Wednesday at the V.A. Medical Center in Syracuse. Mr. Buck grew up in Scipio and resided in the Syracuse area for most of his life. He was an Army veteran of the 1950s and was sta-tioned at forts Lawton and Lewis in Washington state. Upon his discharge from the Army in 1956, he returned to the Northwest and resided in Seattle until 1984, where he worked as a short-haul truck driver and machinist. He loved the outdoors and spent many a weekend and vacation camping. He then returned to the Syracuse area and moved to Mattydale in 1997. He retired in 1995 after 10 years as a machinist at Freidel Paper Box Co. His wife, Lucille "Millie" (Gauthier) Buck, predeceased him on March 12, 2004. Surviving are his son, David J. She was born February 17, 1920, in Brooklyn, NY, the daughter of Andrew and Ursula Sawalska Ostrowski.Mrs. Jablonka was educated in Brooklyn. On October 18, 1942, she married Benjamin Jablonka in New York City. Helen was employed at Revere Copper and Brass for several years, retiring in 1982, and later was employed by the American Red Cross in the Rome Area. Kibbey, William Edward May 24, 2005 William Edward Kibbey, M.D., 57, of Oswego, NY, died Tuesday, May 24, 2005. Fellow of the American College of Surgeons; diplomat: American Board of Surgery 1980-2005; graduate of Ohio State University with a B.S. in zoology in 1969, M.D. in 1973 and M.S. in surgery in 1976. In 1973, Dr. Kibbey received the highest score in the United States on his medical boards. His residency in general surgery 1973-79, Clinical Cancer Fellow, American Cancer Society 1974-75. Clinical associate, National Cancer Institute; clinical cancer education program 1975-77; clinical instructor, Dept. of Surgery 1973-77 at Ohio State. Commander of the Pershing Rifles, R.O.T.C. at Ohio State 1968-69. In 1979, Dr. Kibbey was selected to be director of surgical cancer research at the National Cancer Institute at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. However, the U.S. Army refused the transfer request from Army branch to public health to fulfill his military obligation. Thus, he was stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska, at Fort Wainwright. He was a major in the United States Army at Bassett Military Hospital at Fort Wainwright 1979-81. He became a partner in the Fairbanks Clinic in Fairbanks Alaska, 1981-86; chief of staff at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital 1984-86; solo practice in Fairbanks, AK, 1986-88; solo practice in Sodus, NY, 1988-94; solo practice in Oswego, NY, 1994-2004; chief of surgery at Oswego Hospital 2000-02; member of the American Medical Assoc. 1981-2005; Alaska State Medical Association 1981-1988; state councilor 1985; Fairbanks Medical Assoc. 1981-88; secretary/treasurer 1982; president 1983-84; medical society of the state of New York; Wayne County Medical Assoc. 1988-93; Oswego County medical society 1994-2005; member American Quarter Horse Association, National Reining Horse Assoc., Empire State Quarter Horse Assoc., 1996-2005. Mr. Lanza was an Army veteran of World War II and was a member of Chapter 30 of the Disabled American Veterans. He was employed by the Herald-Journal for many years before retiring in 1973. He was a member and past president of Our Lady of Pompei Holy Name Society and was an avid bowler and golfer. He had also been a former secretary of the Holy Name Bowling League and the Pat Bombard Bowling Classic. He was also a member of the Arrowhead Golf Club. His wife, Genevieve (Anthony) Lanza, died in 1998. He is survived by two sons, Joseph J. Lanza of East Syracuse and Jamie S. McCann, 82, formerly a resident of Fulton, died Thursday at his daughter Donna's home in Auburn after a courageous battle with cancer. He more recently lived at Simeon Dewitt on East 1st St., Oswego. Mr. McCann was born in SouthWest Oswego and was a resident of Fulton for most of his life. He retired from Nestle in 1985 as a morsel molding operator. He was a veteran of WWII, having served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army, 559th Signal Air Corps, as a medical technician. He was a communicant of Immaculate Church in Fulton and most recently attended St. Paul's in Oswego. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to many. He was predeceased by his brothers Fred, Morris, Worden, Louis and Richard McCann and his sisters Eileen Mileskey and Dorothy Miller. Richardson, Margaret Malcolm Richardson June 3, 2005 Margaret Malcolm Richardson, 99, of the Nottingham, formerly of Marcellus, died Friday at Community General Hospital. Born at the Malcolm home at 41 North St., Marcellus, she was the daughter of John R. and Rosalie Withey Malcolm and the last survivor of the six Malcolm children. She was married to Palmer Powls, who died in WWII. She graduated from Syracuse University and earned an M.A. at NYU. She lived in New York City and was a secretary for 25 years for the Markel Foundation, followed by 12 years teaching in a NYC public school in Harlem. After her retirement, she married the Rev. Dean Richardson, and they made their home in Marcellus. Following his death, she moved to the Nottingham Retirement Center at Jamesville. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Marcellus and the Marcellus Study Group. She is survived by a stepdaughter, Louise Wilson of Marcellus; two stepsons, William Richardson of Pittsford and Dean Richardson Jr. of Wolfeboro, NH; niece, Ann White of Tampa, FL; nephews, John Malcolm Archer of Hot Springs, AR, and Robert Green of Chester, NY; seven step-grandchildren; eleven step-great-grandchildren; and three more generations of nieces and nephews. Shaw of Fort Lauderdale, FL, formerly of Pulaski, died Thursday, June 2, at Broward General Medical Center in Florida. He was born July 13, 1948, in Pulaski, son of Thomas and Helen Shaw, and attended Pulaski Schools. He was a member of the Pulaski Ringold Fire Dept. and was a former member of Pulaski VFW Post 7289 and the American Legion Post 358. He joined the Marines in 1969 and served in the Vietnam War. He moved to Florida in 1985. He was a forklift operator. He worked at Syracuse Candle Factory, Grandma Brown's Baked Beans in Mexico and also drove a school bus for Mexico School District and drove for Ontario Tire in Sandy Creek. He was predeceased by his father, Thomas M. Shaw Jr.; his mother, Helen F. Shaw; and his brother Claude A. Shaw. Surviving are two sons, Edwin M. Shaw, GA, and Dennis M. Weinandy, nee Edge, age 96, of Minneapolis, MN, formerly of Wellfleet, MA, and Syracuse, NY, passed away on May 28, 2005. Preceded in death by parents, Mary Dillingham and Walter Smith Edge; brother, Walter Samuel Edge; stepmother, Helen Martin Edge; and husband, Paul Klaus Weinandy, founding director of Huntington Family Centers, in Syracuse, NY. Survived by daughter, Margaret (Gretchen) Clemence and husband Roger; grandsons, Peter (Heidi) and Benjamin (Lisa); granddaughter, Liska (Francis) Chan; and great-grandchildren, Aidan and Lydia Clemence, and Leo Chan. Born in Nyack, NY, on August 6, 1908, Janet was a student at Oakwood Friends School in Poughkeepsie, NY, class of 1926, and a 1932 graduate of Antioch College, in Yellow Springs, OH. In her early fifties, she finished her master of social work degree from Case Western Reserve University. Among her professional writings was "Families Under Stress," written for the Syracuse Housing Authority. She was a social worker for many decades, first in Cleveland, then in Syracuse, where she worked for Child and Family Services, Onondaga County Hospital, and the Syracuse Housing Authority. Janet and Paul retired, in 1970, to Wellfleet (Cape Cod being her ancestral home). While on Cape Cod, Janet, along with others, succeeded in starting a family service agency, based in Brewster. Then, in 1984, Janet moved with Paul to Minnesota to be closer to their daughter. A participating member of the First Unitarian Society of Minneapolis for many years, Janet lived for more than a decade at the Teacher's Park Avenue Residence in Minneapolis, and for the past four years, at Redeemer Residence, also in Minneapolis, where she died. Special thanks to the staff at Redeemer, and to the hospice workers from Hospice of the Lakes. Services will be private. Interment of ashes will be arranged at a future date in Wellfleet, MA. Withey, John Richard May 29, 2005 Longtime Alaska resident, Mr. John Richard Withey, also known as Jack to family and friends in New York, 66, died May 29, 2005, in Anchorage. A memorial service will be held at Kehl's Forest Lawn Mortuary, 11621 Old Seward High-way. Burial will be at Angelus Memorial Park in Anchorage. A reception will follow after the services at 4721 Jumar Ave. John was born on January 5, 1939, in Auburn, NY, to John and Helen Withey. He graduated from Skaneateles High School and attended Syracuse University. John came to Alaska on an assignment with the Air Force. After leaving the Air Force in 1963, John and a longtime friend drove to Alaska. John enjoyed gardening, cooking, entertaining family and his many friends, traveling, clamming and fishing. He worked for the state of Alaska and retired from the Department of Transportation in 1990. John was a member of American Legion Post 28. After retirement, he was able to indulge his love of gardening and travel, sharing life and making friends wherever he went. John especially loved sharing stories and experiences with those he met. He was a master at geography and enjoyed traveling to places he'd never been. John never met a stranger. Everyone he came in contact with was a potential friend. John was outgoing, generous, jovial and an unforgettable force to all who knew and loved him. John liked to be on the move. He knew what he wanted to do and did it. John also knew the value of peaceful moments, sharing many quiet enjoyable times with family and friends at his cabin or beach camp trailer. Mr. Withey is survived by his wife, Linda Withey; brother, Frank Withey and wife Shelva; daughter, Julie Garoutte; sons, Dan Withey and David Withey; relatives in New York and relatives by marriage in Alaska.
