John was born April 22, 1924 in Claremont, New Hampshire the son of Bernice Lloyd Ayer and Harold Easter Ayer. He grew up in Marblehead, Massachusetts and graduated from Marblehead High School in 1942. He attended the University of New Hampshire for a year before joining the Marine Corps. He finished his college career at Cornell University where he graduated in 1947 from the School of Engineering. He met his wife, Helen Allmuth at Cornell and they were married June 21, 1947. He worked for many years at Carrier Corporation in Syracuse, New York. After his retirement, he was Supervisor for the Town of Cazenovia. He enjoyed the job immensely and spoke fondly of his "life in politics." John and Helen traveled extensively during their retirement visiting all seven continents as well as riding on the Orient Express. John was very involved in the Cazenovia community serving as the Chairman of the Town Board of Appeals and on the Vestry and as a church warden at St. Peter's Episcopal Church. In addition, he was appointed to the New York State Solid Waste Commission. John and Helen received the Cazenovia Winter Festival Community Service Award as well. After John and Helen moved to Kendal at Ithaca, John served the St. John's Episcopal Church as a vestryman and also worked at Kendal in various capacities. John was a loyal alumnus of Cornell University and worked hard for the school over the years doing everything from fundraising and planning reunions to cheering loyally for the sports teams. John was also a die-hard Boston Red Sox fan and was elated at the outcome of the 2004 World Series. John is survived by his wife of 57 years, Helen, as well as his four children and their spouses, Elizabeth Ayer and Ed Macaulay of Oneonta, New York, John A. and Kristen Ayer of Cincinnati, Ohio, Carol and Doug Mugglin of Heath, Ohio and Lori and Glen Dumais of East Aurora, New York. He is also survived by his 10 beloved grandchildren, Catherine and Alec Macaulay, Lynsay, Casey and Lauren Ayer, Erika, Brett and Derek Mugglin, and Andrew and Sarah Dumais. Other survivors include his brother and sister-in-law, Ben Ayer and Rochelle Bartlett of Marblehead, Massachusetts; sister, Jane Clay of Foster City, California; sister and brother-in-law, Alison and Larry Voelker of Pittsfield, Massachusetts and many nieces and nephews. Born and raised in Binghamton, he lived in Wilkes Barre, PA, Conklin, NY, Southeast FL, Las Vegas, and retired in Skaneateles, but his real home was 31 summers on Skaneateles Lake. Jim was a graduate of Springfield College. He was a regional director for the NYS Mental Health Dept. for 21 years, retiring in 1985. He was also an adjunct professor at both Florida International University in Miami and the University of Las Vegas, Nevada. He was a Navy veteran of WW II. Surviving are his wife of 41 years, the former Dolores Grim; sons, James of Fort Worth, TX, Andrew of Valley Cottage, Mark Lang of New York, and Wesley Lang of Kaysville, UT; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Gettino Sr., 85, of Solvay, passed away Thursday at St. Camillus Health & Rehabilitation Center. Born in Siracusa, Sicily, he lived in Solvay most of his life. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a mechanic at Allied Chemical for 20years, retiring in 1980. Angelo's memberships included the United Mineworkers District 4, Solvay Tigers AC and the Geddes Veterans Association. Surviving are his wife of 63 years, the former Ida Moore; one daughter, Nancy Fall, of Solvay; one son, Angelo Jr., of Florida; one sister, Marie McMahon, of Westvale; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Hughes, 76, of Syracuse, died Sunday at Community General Hospital. He was born in Utica, NY, and resided in Syracuse for most of his life. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was retired from Local 30 Asbestos Workers Union.He was a founding member of Ryan's Rascals. John was a member of the Pastimes Athletic Club and a previous member of Lyndon Golf Club and Town Isle Golf Club. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed camping, golfing and fly fishing. He was a communicant of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. He was predeceased by his parents, Anne and J. Stanley Hughes, and his brother, William H. Hughes. June 4, 2005 Mary C. Hutchinson, 83, formerly of Camillus, died Saturday, June 4 in Mesa, AZ. Born in Syracuse on December 30, 1921, she was a graduate of St. Patrick's High School, Syracuse Normal School and Syracuse University. Mary taught at Stonehedge School in the West Genesee School District and other area schools for 31 years. Camillus was her home for 44 years until moving to Arizona in 1998. Her husband, John, died in January 1998. She was a communicant of St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church and was predeceased by her husband, of 50 years, Georgein 1998. Born in Syracuse, NY to Efrosini and John Peters Demetriades, she returned to Greece and graduated from the Thessaloniki Preparatory Academy for Girls and was to begin her college years at the University of Thessaloniki to study architecture when WWII broke out and she, along with her younger brother, were brought back to the states by the USS Grisham which was sent to pick up all American born children with their mothers to protect them from harms way. She volunteered in her children's local PTA and Girl Scouts, sang in the Church Choir, was the President and Recording Secretary in The Holy Cross Society and The Ladies of Philoptochos of St. Sophia. Born in Syracuse on August 19, 1931, she attended N. Syracuse High School and graduated Crouse-Irving School of Nurs-ing. The daughter of Clarence Tindale and Kathleen Brady Tindale, she worked at Crouse-Irving Hospital and Upstate Medical Center before moving to Burnt Hills in 1969. Gladys was a supervisor charge nurse for Benedict Memorial Hospital and later for Baptist Health and Rehabilitation Center before retiring. She married Donald O. Reid on June 21, 1952. She was a member of St. Andrew's Church of Scotia and ECW group, a loving wife, homemaker and caregiver. She was once a skilled pianist. Survivors include her husband, Don; and her son, David P. Reid of Glenville; three daughters, Donna R. Wilson and her husband, Lawrence of Denver, CO, Sharon R. Seidel and her husband, Mark of Roanoke, VA and Susan Zampella and her husband, Nathan of Henrietta, NY. Richardson, William Gary June 8, 2005 William Gary Richardson, 51, of Onondaga Hill, died Wednesday at the VA Medical Center. Born in Syracuse, he had lived on Onondaga Hill since 1999. He was retired from the US Coast Guard. An avid outdoorsman, he loved to hunt, fish and boat. He was a member of the NRA and Disabled American Veterans. Surviving are his wife, Cassandra; his step-children, Angelica Ashleigh Post, Shannon Woolwine, William LaBrake and Eric LaBrake; his mother, Sally VanDeBogart; sister, Sherry Richardson; and brothers, Gerald and Robert. "Mollie" Strickland, 93, of Fayetteville, New York, died Friday, June 10. She was predeceased by her husband, M. Carter Strickland, who died in 1989. She was born on January 31, 1912, in Pittsburgh, PA, the daughter of Edith and William DeVore. In 1937, she married M. Carter Strickland and resided in Oneida until 1971. She then moved to Charlotte, NC, and returned to Fayetteville in 2003. While living in Oneida she was active in her church, St. Johns, Oneida, NY, an avid golfer, a member of Onondaga Golf and Country Club and Teugega Golf Club in Rome and a participant in the Syracuse Women's District Golf League. In Charlotte she was a real estate broker and active in real estate. She is survived by three children, Cynthia Butterfield (Donald) of Aspen Glen, Colorado, Seth Strickland (Kathy) of Greenwich, Connecticut, and Carter Strickland (Nan) of Fayetteville, New York; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
