Greene, Hilbert "Hersch" June 18, 2005 Hersch Greene, 87, a lifelong resident of Syracuse, died at home Saturday, June 18, 2005. Hersch was a 1939 graduate of Syracuse University and a 1942 graduate of the SU School of Law, where he graduated first in his class. He went on tohave a successful career as a partner in the law firm of Greene, Hershdorfer and Sharpe. He served as president of the Onondaga County Bar Association and was honored in 1983 with the Association's "Distinguished Lawyer Award." Hersch enlisted in the Army Air Force in 1942 as a lieutenant and served as a combat pilot with the 15th Air Force group in Italy during World War II. He was decorated with a Distinguished Flying Cross and five air medals. As an avid amateur photographer, Hersch has had his works exhibited at the Everson Museum and the SU School of Journalism and has won numerous awards in international competition. Hersch was a lifelong member of Temple Adath Yeshurun. "Molly" June 16, 2005 Mary "Molly" A. Hughes, 88, of the Nottingham, Jamesville, NY, passed away Thursday, June 16, 2005. Molly was born March 5, 1917, in Tres Ritos, New Mexico, and resided in Toledo, Ohio, before moving to Syracuse in 1943. She attended Man-hattanville College and was the widow of Richard T. Hughes, who died in 1993. Throughout her lifetime she gave generously of her time and talents to volunteer work covering a broad spectrum of community activities. These included the United Way, Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts, Everson Museum and the Republican Party. A 30-year solicitor for the United Way Campaign, she served as district chairman for more than 12 years. For many years she served as vice chairman of the City Planning Commission and was a member of the Syracuse Onondaga Planning Commission. A communicant of Immaculate Conception of Fayetteville, she also served on the parish council of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Her former board memberships have included the Junior League, Syracuse Garden Club, Visiting Nurses Association, Volunteer Center, Onondaga County Girl Scouts, Corinthian Foundation, of which she was a founding member, Regional Planning and Development Board, ALPHA-CHIPS Health Planning Agency and the Central NY Kidney Disease Society. She is survived by her two sons, James (Charlene) of Fayetteville, NY, and George (Madeleine) of Annapolis, MD; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Sheila was born in Brooklyn, New York, on August 17, 1927, daughter of the late David and HannahSchiff. She was a graduate of Syracuse University and volunteered for over 25 years as a docent with the Everson Museum in Syracuse. A lifelong friend of the arts, Mrs. Schwartz was a founding member and past president of Friends of Stone Quarry Hill Art Park. She was also a member and past president of the Social Art Club. Sheila was very energetic and athletic throughout her life; she enjoyed many sports and was a member of the National Ski Patrol. Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Irving Schwartz of Charlotte, NC; daughters, Suellen Carman, and her husband, Peter, of Wilson, WY; and Sally Lang and her husband, David, of Mansfield, Ontario, Canada; sister, Ellyn Berman of New York City; grandsons, Tobey Carman and Robert Lang; granddaughters, Sabra Carman, Lindsey Lang and Dr. Jennifer Lang, and her husband, William Ryder; several nieces and nephews. June 18, 2005 George A. Urquhart Jr., 68, of Sandy Creek, formerly of Rochester, died peacefully at home on Saturday surrounded by his family. A native of Rochester, he came to Sandy Creek in 1980. He was a member of the Asbestos Workers Local #26 and was co-owner of the Martin Hotel for 16 years, retiring in 1996. He was also a member of Sea Breeze Fire Dept. in Rochester. Survivors: two daughters, Karen (Jim) Giordano and Kelly Wood; a son, David (Penny) Urquhart; seven grandchildren: Lindsey, Bryan, Jamie Lynn, Victoria, Rachael, Adam and Tyler; two brothers, William (Pat) and Benjamin (Shirley); a niece; four nephews; his companion, Millie Doell; and former wife, Dale Harris. Published in the Syracuse Post Standard on 6/20/2005. Utt Sr., David R. June 17, 2005 David R. Utt Sr., 73, of Oswego Rd., Clay, died Friday. Born in Syracuse to the late William W. Utt and Mabel B. Rickert, David was appointed to the Syracuse Police Dept., on January 1, 1957, transferring to Onondaga Co. Sheriffs' Dept. February 9, 1966, as a detective. He was promoted to detective sergeant in 1979, retiring in 1982 due to illness after 25 years. During those 25 years of service, he also was employed part-time with the North Syracuse Police Dept. and the NYS Park Police. He was predeceased by his sister, E. Arlene Gane, in 2003. Surviving are his wife, the former Helen J. Fox; sons, David R. of Liverpool and Wallace E. of Atlanta, GA; daughter, Diane E. (John) Brzuszkiewicz of Bridgeport, NY; one stepson, Charles Parker, and Jacqueline Webber of N. Syracuse; three stepdaughters: Donna Collins of Utica, Frances (John) Perry of Liverpool and Darla Sebelowitz of Liverpool; one brother, William W. Utt Jr. of Wayne, PA; one sister, Marjorie M. Robinson of New Freedom, PA; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 21, at Allanson-Glanville-Tappan Funeral Home, Phoenix, with Rev. Kenneth Blyth officiating. Burial in Phoenix Rural Cemetery.
