Benforado, Sally Bowen March 2, 2005 Sally Bowen Benforado, age 80, died peacefully on March 2, 2005, at her home in Madison, WI. She was born Aug. 12, 1924, in Syracuse, to Willet Raynor Bowen and Ruth Harty Bowen. After receiving a business degree from Syracuse University, she married, in 1948, Dr. Joseph Benforado, a graduate of the university's medical school. From Syracuse, the couple moved to Boston and then to Buffalo. In 1967, Joe accepted a position at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, a city that became the family home for 38 years. The family spent a formative year near Oxford, England, where Joe had a university fellowship in pharmacology. Sally characterized her Dorchester-on-Thames stay as "very happy," in no small part because the observer in her so enjoyed British village life. In later years, Sally and Joe traveled to England, France, Ireland, Italy, and Spain, visiting children, grandchildren, and friends. They also explored many a national park and seashore in the U.S. and Canada together. Sally's life was guided by many interests and passions, in particular a love of the natural world and the written word. An accomplished writer and photographer, she taught writing for the University of Wisconsin Extension and led many memoir-writing workshops around Wisconsin; her most recent book, "Bring Me More Stories: Tales of the Sephardim" (Floricanto Press, 2005), is based on her mother-in-law's memories of life in Turkey. A memoir of family life in Syracuse exists in manuscript. In youth, a skier and golfer, she turned later to running, entering her first marathon at 62, and to yoga. Music, and in particular, the voice, was central to Sally's life. She sang with Boston's Handel and Haydn Society and the Buffalo Schola Cantorum. In her final weeks, she was as likely to sing her thoughts as speak them. Sally's beloved Joe died in 2002. She is also predeceased by a daughter, Kathryn, and by her sister, Mary Bowen Stevens, both of whom died in 1999. Sally is remembered with love by her children, Susan Benforado Bakewell, of TX; Jay Benforado of VA; Caroline Aksoy of NY; David J. Benforado and Marianne Benforado, both of WI; by five daughters- and sons-in-law and six grandchildren; and by her brother, Dr. Willet Bowen, of CT, as well as by many others, relatives, friends, and students. At Sally's request there was no funeral. In keeping with her ideals for a peaceful world, full of educational opportunity for all, donations may be made in her memory to the Madison Public Library Foundation (for the Sequoya Branch renovation), 201 W. Mifflin St., Madison, WI 53703 (www.madisonpubliclibrary.org), or to the American Friends Service Committee, 1501 Cherry St., Philadelphia, PA 19102 (www.afsc.org).
