March 21, 2005 Emerson R. Avery, Sr., 79, of 9 Rosewood Ave., Cortland, NY, died March 21, 2005 at SUNY Upstate Medical Hospital in Syracuse. A practicing attorney in Cortland until the time of his death, Mr. Avery was born on November 8, 1925, a son of the late Roy and Ethel Avery of Newark Valley. Mr. Avery graduated from Newark Valley High School and enlisted at 17 years old and saw action in Africa and Europe in the Army Air Corps during World War II. After his service, he was honorably discharged and decommissioned as a Second Lieutenant. Mr. Avery married Phyllis Marie Unold of Binghamton. He attended and graduated from Syracuse University with a bachelor's degree. Mr. Avery also held a Juris Doctorate from Cornell University Law School. He and his wife, Phyllis moved to Cortland where he opened up a law practice in September, 1953. Mr. Avery, a sole practitioner for many years, practiced for a few years with his sons, Robert and Emerson, Jr. before Robert left for other law opportunities. His son, Emerson, Jr., practiced with his father for many years before being elected Cortland County Judge. Mr. Avery was a member and past president of the Kiwanis Club, a member of the VFW, Post #2354, the American Bar Association, and the New York State Bar Association. He was active in the community and a member of the Homer Methodist Church. An avid sports fan, Mr. Avery faithfully attended his children's and grandchildren's sporting events, as well as Syracuse University athletic events. Mr. Avery's favorite sport to watch was wrestling, a sport at which his three sons and five of his grandsons excelled, even though he, himself had been a varsity basketball player in high school. Mr. Avery also loved to play cards, hunt, and fish and was the owner of a fishing camp in Quebec, the site of some of his great adventures. He was a friend to many, a generous and kind man, and a gentleman. A loving husband, father, and proud grandfather, Mr. Avery is survived by his wife of 56 years, Phyllis Avery, a former school teacher; his three sons, Emerson R. Avery, Jr. (Marilyn), of Cortland, Robert Avery (Philomena Mantella) of Foxboro, MA, Lawrence Avery (Lisa Harris) of Albany; his three daughters, Dianne M. Avery (Beni Levi) of Cincinnati, OH, Nancy A. Dafoe (Daniel) of Homer, and Phyllis M. Avery (Gary Weiner) of Plymouth, MI; his grandchildren, Colette, Nicole, and Blaise Dafoe, Emerson, III and Michael Avery, Vincent Nicholas, and Victor Avery, and Ethan, Emily, and Matthew Weiner. Mr. Avery is also survived by his devoted sisters, Loretta Avery of Newark Valley and Leola (Jack) Culley of Fort Collins, CO. Born in Syracuse, he was a graduate of Nottingham High School and Syracuse University. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, friend, coach and communityleader. His amazing sense of humor and commitment to his country and community were legendary. He was greatly loved by all that knew him. He was a probation officer for Onondaga County for 29 years and spent several years as president of the Probation Officers Association. He joined the Merchant Marines at 16 years of age during World War II. He was a Sergeant in the US Army from 1950 to 1952 during the Korean War and received two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart. He was very active in veterans organizations and affairs. He earnestly campaigned for recognition both for Merchant Marines and Korean War Veterans. He was a member of VFW's and a past commander of the Skaneateles Falls American Legion Post #317. He established and led the Memorial Day Parade in Elbridge for 19 years. He was also one of the original organizers of the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Syracuse. He had a passion for athletics. While still in high school he played on the Thornden Park Terrors semi-pro football team. As an adult he played on recreational softball teams. He loved handball and participated and won many handball tournaments throughout the Syracuse area. He coached football at Phoenix Central School for three years, and then coached football for the Boys Club. He was a coach and president of the North Syracuse Little League. He is predeceased by his loving wife, Lorie. Surviving are his daughters, Karen Gwilt of Liverpool, Lorie A. He was a memberof the American Bar Association and the Onondaga County Bar Association, and was recently honored as an attorney who had practiced for 50 years. He was a graduate of Amherst College and the Harvard Law School. Mr. Murray served as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps in both World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of the Cazenovia Club and the Cazenovia Golf Club. Nicotra, Gerardo March 22, 2005 Gerardo Nicotra, age 77, of Liverpool, passed away Tuesday in St. Joseph's Hospital after a long illness. The son of Filippo and Carmela Russo Nicotra, he was born in Italy and served in the Italian Army. He moved to the Syracuse area in 1956and was employed by Syracuse China for 35 years, retiring in 1990. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Pompei Church. He was predeceased by one sister, Lorenza Coco; and two brothers, Gregorio and Alfio Nicotra. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Mary C. Santoro Nicotra; a daughter, Carmela M. North, Eunice Irene March 22, 2005 Mrs. Eunice Irene North, 84, of 226 Farrier Ave., the Towers, Oneida, died early Tuesday morning, March 22, 2005, at her residence. Eunice was born May 12, 1921, in Merrillsville, N.Y., daughter of Ethan and Rita Ingalls Orcutt. She was a graduate of Stockbridge Valley High School, class of 1938. On Sept. 1, 1940, in Oneida, Eunice was united in marriage with Robert North. Following their marriage, Eunice, along with her husband, a United Methodist minister, served several churches in the Northern New York Conference. Upon their retirement, the couple then made the Sherrill area home. Eunice was a member of Christ Church United Methodist of Sherrill and was active in the United Methodist Women. Surviving besides her husband, the Rev. Robert North, are daughters, Charlene Loucks of Tualatin, Oregon, Linda and her husband Douglas Houmiel of Cicero, and Karen and her husband Weldon Papineau of Carthage; sister, Carol Cast of Seabrook, Texas; three brothers, Howard, Roger and Norman Orcutt, all of Oneida; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. O'Shea, John Patrick March 22, 2005 Mr. John Patrick O'Shea, 81, 6 Ash Street, Massena, died Tuesday, March 22, 2005 morning at Massena Memorial Hospital, where he was admitted from the St. Regis Nursing Home on March 13, 2005. He was born May 25, 1923 in Hudson Falls, NY, the son of the late Celestine Patrick and Hannah (Dougherty) O'Shea. He graduated from Lake Placid High School in 1941. He served in the Pacific with the US Navy from November 1942 until January 1946. He married Fern A. Thew on July 27, 1946 at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Lake Placid with Father Kelley, celebrating. Mrs. O'Shea died July 21, 2002. He was an installer and repairman for New York Telephone Company, retiring in February 1984. He was a member of the Massena Volunteer Fire Department for 39 years, serving as chief from 1977 to 1978, he was currently a member of the Massena Exempt Firemen. As a dedicated volunteer fireman, he twice received the Fireman of the Year for Northern New York. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers, Earl J. Sanitmaw VFW Post #1143, American Legion Post #79, and a communicant of the Church of the Sacred Heart. He is survived by his two sons, John Patrick O'Shea, Jr., Massena, Michael Thew O'Shea, Massena; three daughters, April Rizzo, Syracuse, Kathy and Steve Bradish, Massena, Colleen and William Foster, Massena; 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. VanZandt, Dennis March 21, 2005 Dennis VanZandt, of Benson Rd., Skaneateles, died Monday, March 21, 2005, after a brief illness. Dennis was born in Rahway, New Jersey, on March 20, 1939. He graduated from Woodbridge High School and spent three years in the U.S. Navy. He graduated from Rutgers in 1964, married, and started work at Mutual Life Insurance Co. as a life underwriter. When MONY innovated a Comprehensive Life Underwriting Expert Computer System, it was Dennis' 25-year knowledge that was used. This project was one of the highlights of his career. After retiring from MONY, Dennis became the owner of the Royal Coachman-a fly shop. Here he spent many happy years swapping "fish" stories with his buddies. When his sons were young, Dennis was active in the Cub and Boy Scouts. His family was his first love, but fly fishing was a close second. He was fortunate to have fished in Alaska, Northwest Territory and the Bahamas. He was also a prize winning home brewer. Dennis loved to travel, showing his family great places and good times. When one trip was over, he already planned the next. Antarctica was a dream come true. Dennis leaves behind his mother Dorothy VanZandt McNamara; his wife Inge; sons, Dennis and Steven; daughter-in-law Kristina; grandsons, Erik and William Dennis; brother William; nephews, William and Nicholas; great-nephews, Max and Nick; and great-niece Emma.
