Before moving to Syracuse, Jack grew up in Sacketts Harbor, NY. He was an avid vegetable grower, famous for his tomatoes and pumpkins. He retired from ABF Trucking and the Teamsters Local 317. Jack served in the Marine Corps. He was a native of Montrose, LA, lived in North Syracuse and summered at Three Mile Bay. A World War II and Korean War Navy veteran, he served on the USS Massey. In1979, he retired from Brown and Root of Texas and had previously worked for Crouse Hinds Co. as an ironworker. He was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Church. He was predeceased by his wife of 51 years, the former Rita J. Biel on September 18, 2000; and by his brothers, Arnold, LeRoy and James. Surviving are three children, Patricia A. Cardillo, Pauline Grace March 28, 2005 Pauline Grace Cardillo, 66, born December 15, 1938 passed away peacefully on Monday. Pauline was a native Syracusan, and the daughter of Joseph and Lena Cardillo. Pauline and her twin, Carol Lucille, were born three months premature.Pauline weighed two pounds at birth and immediately dropped to one pound 11 ounces. Her twin survived 15 hours. Pauline not only survived but also went on to lead a full life in spite of the many setbacks she had with cerebral palsy. Pauline was known for her independent spirit and tenacious attitude. As a longtime resident of Vinette Towers she enjoyed shopping at the Pond Street Wegman's, where the staff was kind and gracious to her. She was a watchful tenant and readily communicated with the Syracuse Housing Authority regarding any building maintenance concerns. Pauline was compassionate and caring to others, generous and giving, not only monetarily but of herself. She was a graduate of Percy Hughes School. She enjoyed reading and painting pictures. She loved dogs, cats and had goldfish for many years. She liked all kinds of music and enjoyed listening to Armand Magnarelli on Sunday morning. She was proud of her Italian Heritage. He was a reliability mechanic for the Eastman-Kodak Co. in Rochester for those 24 years. He was a communicant of St. Johns Church in Spencerport and was an Air Force veteran. Catalano, Dominic March 29, 2005 Dominic Catalano passed away after a courageous battle with pneumonia at the age of 90. Mr. Catalano was born on August 6, 1914 in Syracuse to parents, George and Katherine Catalano. He worked at Carrier Corporation fromMarch 4, 1941 to his retirement in 1977. His time at Carrier is most notable by his efforts with the American Federation of Labor. He was elected and served as President from 1956 to 1962. Mr. Catalano was an avid golfer and bowler, routinely defeating competitors half his age. He also was an avid reader particularly focused on current events and politics. He was the true "yellow dog Democrat"-- he would vote for a yellow dog if that dog was nominated by the Democratic Party. Mr. Catalano also loved the excitement of horse racing, in particular, his beloved Saratoga Park. Mr. Catalano will be remembered as a charismatic leader, a devoted family member, a truly compassionate person who gave of himself routinely and freely without reservation or measure. He would think nothing of giving his life savings away to a family member or friend in need. He opened his home and his heart to all who were struggling-- from a niece to a ex-con. The family would like to take this opportunity to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at University Hospital, Unit 6 B, for the dignity and respect that they showed to Mr. Catalano. D'Amato, Sister Nicolina March 24, 2005 Sister Nicolina D'Amato, 54, of Rome, Italy, went to be with the Lord on March 24, 2005. Sister was born in Paternopoli, in the Province of Avellino, Italy the daughter of Michele and Giovannina D'Amato and named Maria. She entered the order of theSisters of San Giovanni Battista at the age of 11, attended school in Rome, Italy and professed her final vows in 1968. Sister worked in orphanages and missions throughout Italy and in the Philippines. She was born April 4, 1916 in Utica, the daughter of the late Samuel and Anna Levitt Finkelstein. Mrs. Devorsetz was a graduate of Utica schools and the University of Pennsylvania. On October 14, 1945, she married Harold Devorsetz. Mr. and Mrs. Devorsetz resided for many years in Syracuse. Mr. Devorsetz passed away February 1, 1983. Prior to her retirement, Mrs. Devorsetz was employed as a library clerk with the Syracuse Public Library System. Early in her life, she was a lab technician. She was a member of the Temple Society of Concord, Syracuse and its sisterhood. Mrs. Devorsetz was also a former member of Temple Beth El, Utica, member of the Onondaga Chapter of Self Help for the Hearing Impaired and a volunteer at Upstate Medical Center, Syracuse. He was a member and former president of the telephone pioneers. He was an avid photographer and an artist during his retirement. He was an active member of the Episcopal Church. Born in Syracuse, she was the daughter of Vivian Seely McLusky and James McLusky. She and her late husband, Harold W. Miller, Ph.D., owned "Apple-wood" Orchards, Dr. Miller died in 1970. Mrs. Miller was a teacher. She started her career teaching grades 1 thru 8 in a one-room schoolhouse in Williamstown, NY. For many years, she was a 6th grade teacher at Cherry Road School in the Westhill School District, where she served as Principal from 1952 until her retirement in 1976. Mrs. Miller was a 75-year member of the First Presbyterian Church United of Syracuse. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society, the NYS Retired Teachers Association, Onondaga County Retired Teachers Association, General Asa Danforth Chapter of NSDAR, Central-City Fralick Eastern Star # 433, the NY Farm Bureau, Moravia Grange and the Corinthian Club. She was a graduate of Syracuse's Central Technical High School and Syracuse Normal School. "Millie" Serio, passed away at Van Duyn Home & Hospital, where she received loving care for the past four years. Millie was a well known waitress and mater-de in Syracuse for over 40 years. She was employed at the Dinkler MotorInn as a waitress and then became dining room manager. She was mater-de at Sterio's Landmark Restaurant until their closing. Millie was well known for her Caesar Salad which she prepared in an enormous wooden bowl at table-side. When most people would have retired, she went to work for Roman's Restaurant in Syracuse until suffering a stroke in 1998. Her happy personality and giving nature made her loved by everyone. Survived by daughters, Rose M. Russo and Maryann Wicks; son-in-law, Richard Wicks; two granddaughters; and four grandsons; five great-grandchildren; and her godchild, Patricia Caiello; she is also survived by two nephews and two nieces. Millie was predeceased by her husband, John in 1949 and her great-grandson, Jacob Capucilli-Shatan. She was the last surviving child of Alphonse and Maria Giacchi. A funeral mass in celebration of her life will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in Blessed Sacrament Church, James St., Eastwood. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. "Tommy" Smith, formerly of Syracuse, NY, aged 61, passed away on Friday, March 25, 2005 at his home in Las Vegas, Nevada. He worked at Harrah's Casino in Las Vegas. Born and raised in Paulsboro, NJ, Tommy lived a full and vibrant life. After graduating from Paulsboro High School, he attended Glassboro State College earning a Bachelor's degree, then attended Maxwell School of Citizenship at Syracuse University for his Masters Degree. Tommy was an accomplished pianist and composer. His jazz quartet opened for Ella Fitzgerald at Buffalo Shea Theater. He played a significant role in organizing the Wescott/Syracuse Jazz Festival and worked for the New York Council of the Arts. His greatest loves were music and people. His hobbies were playing the piano, composing music, reading and playing chess with his children. Along with being an accomplished musician, Tommy also had a career in Human Services with many years of employment with the Division of Civil Rights in Washington, D.C., as well as a Hutchings Mental Health Facility in Syracuse, NY. He is survived by two sons, Tremond Edward of Washington, D.C. and Edric Hayden of Syracuse, NY; his parents, Etta Smith of Woodbury and Thomas C. Smith of Deptford; one brother, Terence Smith of Woodbury; three sisters, Patricia Smith (West) of Pennsauken, JoAnn Robinson (Walter) of Williamstown, and Guynell Smith-Lopez (Warren) of Franklinville; nieces, Tammi Robinson and Terri Brown (Jaleel); great-niece, Taylor; and great-nephews, Michael and Jadan.
