Bentinck-Smith, John May 12, 2005 Dr. John Bentinck-Smith, DVM, Professor Emeritus of Cornell University, age 86, of 5 Horizon Dr., Ithaca, NY, died Thursday, May 12, 2005, at home. Born January 24, 1919, in Boston, MA, he was the son of the late William Frederick and Marion Jordan Bentinck-Smith. He was predecesed by brothers William and his wife, Phebe Bentinck-Smith, and Peter Bentinck-Smith. Dr. Bentinck-Smith was a graduate of Harvard University and received his DVM from Cornell University. After graduation he went in the U.S. Army to serve during WWII. Upon his return, he was employed at the Bronx Zoo, Angel Memorial Animal Hospital in Boston, MA, and then became a professor of veterinary medicine at Cornell, retiring in 1981. During his time at Cornell, he also spent time working for the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Following retirement, he took a position as professor at Mississippi State University, College of Veterinary Medicine, retiring in 1990. He loved to teach, and his students were his priority. He also loved sailing and woodworking. She was born September 22, 1941, in Camden, NY, a daughter of Albert and Louise Avery Engle and had lived in the Augusta area as a child. She graduated from Madison High School. On September 22, 1962, she married Gary D. Butman in Madison. They moved to Amboy Center in 1971, after living in West Monroe for several years. Mr. Butman passed away June 26, 2003. Barb had worked for nearly 10 years with A.P.W. Central Schools and later retired from Colonie Liquors as a sales agent. Jeffers, Lucian T. April 20, 2005 Lucian entered eternal rest with his heavenly father on April 20, 2005. He was born the fourth of six children to Lynn and Hattie Tilton Jeffers, on the homestead in Mexico, New York. He enlisted in the U.S. Army earning the rank of corporal in 1943. Upon completion of duty, he married Doris Irene Sanderson in 1946, in Fulton, New York. They raised two children, Diane, born 1949, and David, born 1950. Lucian completed his training in air conditioning and refrigeration in Chicago, Illinois. He was also a certified welder as a lifelong profession, employed with Bell Aircraft in Buffalo, New York, and Conax Corporation before retiring to Ft. Myers, Florida, in 1981. Kappesser, Edward A. May 14, 2005 Edward A. Kappesser, 90, of Sandy Pond, died Saturday, May 14, at his home. Born on the north side of Syracuse, he graduated from Vocational Tech in 1933. After serving in the CCC in Pennsylvania, Mr. Kappesser joined the NYS Troopers in1936 and served in Troop D until 1961, when he retired as 1st Sergeant in Oneida. During WWII he served with the Marines on the light cruiser Vicksburg in the Pacific, participating in the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He first came to Sandy Pond in 1932 and has lived there with his family since 1952. He was employed by Flickinger's and Lee Schoeller Paper before joining Blount Lumber Company in Lacona as a salesman in the north country. He served as Town Justice in Sandy Creek for 25 years, from 1967-1992. He was a member of the Police Benevolent Association and the Association of Former NYS Troopers. He married Ruth Ashby Kappesser of Syracuse in 1948; she passed away on March 12, 2000. Surviving are three sons: Edward of Sandy Pond; Stephen of Joppa, MO; Peter of Syracuse; one daughter, Amy of Sandy Pond; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. "Hal" Phillips, 71, of Baldwinsville, formerly of Liverpool, passed away Friday at home after a brief illness. Hal was a career banker of 41 years. He worked 37 years for Merchants National Bank and another four years for On-Bank, retiring in 1997. He was a graduate of the Stonier School of Banking at Rutgers University and a graduate of the American Institute of Banking, as well as an instructor of the A.I.B. Program at Onondaga Community College for over 30 years. Hal was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Navy aboard the hospital ship U.S.S. Haven. He served the village of Liverpool as president of the Chamber of Commerce, village trustee, deputy mayor and was also a member of the Liverpool American Legion. Hal is survived by his wife of 51 years, June Billy Phillips; his sons, John Phillips of Baldwinsville and Chris (Kim) Phillips of North Syracuse; daughters, Cindi (Bill) MacKenzie of North Syracuse and Sheri (Amar) Majmundar of North Carolina; mother-in-law, Julia Billy of Syracuse; and daughter-in-law, Tracy Phillips of North Syracuse. Snyder, 85, formerly of Oxbow Road, Canastota, died Wednesday at Iroquois Nursing Home, Jamesville, following a lengthy illness. Mary lived in Canastota most of her life, graduating from Canastota High School in 1938. She hadalso lived in Manlius, Jamesville and Fayetteville. Mary worked as a secretary for the Tigris Shrine in Syracuse for 35 years, retiring in 1984. She had been a member of the Daughters of the Nile, Ilderim Temple #15. Mary married Harry J. "Joe" Snyder on July 3, 1965, in Boonville, NY. Joe died on October 30, 1984. She was predeceased by her brother Norman G. Stafford in 1962. Survivors: two cousins, Dorothy P. Spinella, 74, of Caughdenoy Rd., Clay, passed away peacefully on Thursday at home with his family at his side. He was the son of the late Salvatore and Mary Spinella. His only brother, Phillip Spinella, passed away April 25, 2005. Anthonywas a United States Army veteran, Special Troops #7888, stationed in Heidelberg, Germany, during the Korean War. A 1957 graduate of Lemoyne College, he started teaching English at Fulton High School that same year. He traveled to Yap Micronesea, where he continued his teaching for three years in the mission schools. He also taught at Henninger High and North High schools. He retired in 1992 from the Onondaga County Board of Elections after 20 years of service. Anthony was a communicant of Beacon Baptist Church. He loved the outdoors and often traveled to the Adirondacks. Gardening, photography and swimming were dear to him. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, the former Celestina Ianno; three daughters: Nancy Spinella of Cicero, Kateri Phillips of Baldwinsville and Christina (Joseph) Santimaw of Brewerton; five sons: Salvatore (Terri) Spinella of Cicero, Dominic Spinella of Clay, Anthony (fiancee Roxanne) Spinella Jr. of Central Square, Vincent (Julie) Spinella of W. Monroe and Philip Spinella of Clay; his sister-in-law, Dorothy Spinella.
