He worked 37 years for Merchants National Bank and another four years for On-Bank, retiring in 1997. He was a graduate of the Stonier School of Banking at Rutgers University and a graduate of the American Institute of Banking, as well as an instructor of the A.I.B. Program at Onondaga Community College for over 30 years. Hal was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Navy aboard the hospital ship U.S.S. Haven. He served the village of Liverpool as president of the Chamber of Commerce, village trustee, deputy mayor and was also a member of the Liverpool American Legion. Born April 29, 1916 in Chuckery Corners, Clinton, NY, he was the son of Charles Roswell Williams and Dorothy (Gridley) Williams. He was a student at Chuckery Corners District School and the Marvin Street School which he attended from the 8th grade through high school. A 1937 graduate of Hamilton College, Clinton, NY and a 1940 graduate of General Theological Seminary, New York, NY, he was ordained an Episcopal deacon and then a priest in 1940. He served parishes in Candor, Waterville, New Hartford, Oneida and Watertown. He was a U.S. Army chaplain with the rank of Captain during the Korean War, and was stationed in France. He was also priest in charge at St. Paul's Church, Paris Hill, NY during the summer for a total of 22 years. On July 10, 1943, the Rev. Williams was married at Grace Church, Waterville, to Avis Lucille Norton of Interlaken, NY. They both retired in 1978 and moved from Watertown to Clinton, prior to moving to Springside Retirement Community, in Oswego. He is survived by his wife, Avis; his sister, Jean W. Ashforth, Clinton, NY; his four children, Susan W. Vorce (Elliott), Penn Yan, NY, Alan Williams (Gay), Oswego, NY, Joel Williams (Alexandra), Saratoga Springs, NY and Mark Williams (Jennifer), Neversink, NY; as well as seven grandchildren. The public is invited to celebrate a Eucharist of the Resurrection on Thursday May 19th, 2005 at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Resurrection, Oswego, NY to be followed by a private burial at Waterville Cemetery, Waterville, NY.
