Baker, Marilyn Olive (Spall) (Spall) Baker May 16, 2005 Marilyn Olive (Spall) Baker, 74, of Hamilton, NY, passed away Monday, May 16, 2005, at University Hospital, Syracuse, NY, following a long illness. Born May 23, 1930, in Rochester, NY, she was a daughter of Arthur and Olive (Vogel) Spall. She was a graduate of Mercy High School in Rochester, and received her BA from Nazareth College and her MS in education from SUNY Oswego. On December 29, 1962, Marilyn was united in marriage to Lawrence J. Baker in Rochester, NY, and they made Hamilton their home since 1963. Marilyn was an elementary school educator at Holland (NY) Central School, was a regular substitute teacher at Hamilton and Morrisville Central Schools for many years, and also taught at the Chenango Nursery School. Mrs. Baker was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Hamilton, where she had been the director of religious education for many years, and a member of the Altar and Rosary Society. She was also a board member for Catholic Charities of Madison County, a member of the Hamilton Senior Citizens, and a volunteer for "Worn Again." A wonderful daughter, wife, mother and friend, Marilyn is survived by her husband, Lawrence; her daughters and sons-in-law, Kathleen M. and David Williams of Hamilton, Patricia A. and Fred Monaco of Utica, Eileen S. and Randall Bunce of Trumansburg, Mary E. and Peter Vantine of Bethesda, MD; five grandchildren, Matthew and Gregory Williams, Maggie and Louis Monaco, and Makayla Bunce; several aunts and cousins, including a special cousin, Margie Vogel of East Rochester. Burgmeier, Raymond "Burgy" Burgmeier May 17, 2005 Raymond "Burgy" Burgmeier, 78, of East Syracuse, passed away peacefully in the home he built. He was a World War II Navy Veteran serving in the Pacific. He worked for Allied Chemical for 37 years and retired from LCP Chemical assuperintendent in 1984. Ray was an avid hunter and outdoorsman at his beloved "Tranquility Hill" family camp which he also built in 1963. He was also a master wood worker and a "jack of all trades". Most important was the love of his family and friends. Ray was predeceased by his sons, Stephen in 1973 and Raymond "Buzz" in 1993. Caldwell, Nora Patricia Curtin Caldwell May 17, 2005 Nora Patricia Curtin Caldwell, 70, of Camillus, died May 17 at her home after a long illness. A native of Syracuse, Mrs. Caldwell lived in Camillus for the last 30 years. Mrs. Caldwell was employed as a secretary with the Syracuse School Districtfor over 20 years, retiring in 1998. A graduate of Most Holy Rosary High School, Nora was a communicant of Most Holy Rosary Church most of her life. Nora was an avid golfer and a former member of the Bellevue Country Club. She was also one of the original "Potato Girls" in the St. Patrick's Day Parade. She is survived by her former husband, Edward R. Caldwell; daughters, Kelly A. Michael Fitzgibbons, 55, passed away suddenly at his home in Saratoga Springs Sunday morning. Born on October 19, 1949, in Syracuse, NY, he was an area resident for 21 years and son of Kathryn Mary (Hayes) Fitzgib-bons and the late John J. Fitzgibbons. Mr. Fitzgibbons retired as an executive vice president from Key Corp in 2001. At the time of his death he was a founder and managing director of Overland Capital Group, Inc. in Clifton Park, NY. He was a member of the board of directors of the Saratoga ARC and a parishioner at the Church of St. Peter. Originally from Syracuse, NY, he and his family have lived in Saratoga since 1984. A graduate of CBA, he attended Syracuse University and the School of Bank Administration at the University of Wisconsin. Known as "Pa" to his children and his children's closest friends, Michael's greatest passions in life were his family, his home, and his countless deep friendships. A wonderful father and husband, he was also a generous friend and mentor to many. Michael is survived by his wife Carol; his children, Katie and David; his mother, Kathryn Mary; his sisters, Patricia (Tom) Hannon of Florida and Pam Fitzgibbons of Syracuse; as well as several nieces and nephews. Elizabeth"Betty" enjoyed family visits, road trips to the Adirondack Mountains, especially enjoyed lake views and Fall foliage. She was a beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt andday care mother to hundreds of children. Born in Hamilton, she attended Fredonia State College where she majored in Theater Arts. She owned and operated Aunt Sandy's Family Day Care in Manlius, a nationally accredited, 5 Star rated program that was one of her greatest joys. Sandy spread her beauty, love and joy through many activities, including singing and acting. She was a REIKI Practitioner, volunteered with Hospice and was a former President of the Manlius Fire Department Auxiliary. She was a member of the Backstage Backers, a board member for Child Care Solutions, and a member of the Manlius First Baptist Church and the Infinite Light Church. Her mission in life was to help people recognize the divinity within them. Although her physical presence will be missed, her sunshine will live on in our hearts forever. Heffernan, James D. May 14, 2005 Born in 1910 and brought up on a farm in Fabius, New York, James D. Heffernan graduated from Fabius High School, earning both a New York State Regent's scholarship and membership in the Honor Society. In 1933 he earned a B.A. in business from Syracuse University and joined the staff of Lincoln National Bank, opened three years earlier. He became president of the bank and later chairman of the board for the last nine years of his career. He was also chairman of the Lincoln First Banks, when that holding company was formed with several other upstate banks in 1967. During his 43-year banking career, he was a member of the New York State and American Bankers' Associations, as well as Robert Morris Associates. In 1964 he chaired the national convention of the Robert Morris group in Montreal. Very active in community affairs as well, he was named Young Man of the Year by the Junior Chamber of Commerce in 1944. He headed up the American Red Cross drive in Syracuse in 1948, and in 1955 was chairman of the first United Fund Drive, which merged the efforts of the Red Cross and the Community Chest. Later he was chairman of the building fund drive for Bishop Ludden and Bishop James high schools. He was a board member and president of the Everson Museum of Art. He helped raise the funds for the current museum building, hiring a then little-known architect, I.M. Pei. Other activities include serving as a member of the Board of Regents for Le Moyne College, chairman of the St. Thomas More Foundation, board member of St. Joseph's and Community General Hospitals, and as a member of the Chamber of Commerce. He also served on the Metropolitan Development Association, the Water Board, and the Revision Committee of 1960 for the city of Syracuse. He was an ardent golfer, playing for many years at the Onondaga Golf and Country Club, where he also served as treasurer for several years. He was also a member of both the U.S. and New York Seniors Golf Associations. Other memberships include the University Club, the Century Club, and the choir of Holy Cross Church in DeWitt. An avid skier in winter, he traveled to many of the outstanding ski areas, here and abroad, and was a member of the 70+ ski club. He was one of the charter members of Cazenovia Ski Club. He was predeceased by his wife Geraldine in 1991. He is survived by his four children, James D. Heffernan of Stockton, California, James C. Heffernan, M.D., of Sacramento, California, Patricia R. Heffernan of Fayetteville, N.Y., and Geraldine M. Heffernan of Cathedral City, California; and his longtime friend, Carol Linart. Nancy Holmes Paulder, 86, died Thursday, May 12, 2005. A life resident of the Syracuse area, she was a world traveler, visiting many destinations including Jerusalem, Europe and Mexico. A graduate of Syracuse University, she wasan elementary school teacher and retired in 1983 as an accountant for the Syracuse Housing Authority. She was a member of the Lafayette Senior Citizens Group and the Retired Teachers' Association. She was predeceased by her husband, Raymond H. Paulder, in 1978; they had been married since January 1939. She was also predeceased by her parents, Willard and Margaret (Segovis) Holmes, and twin baby girls, Judith Ann and June Ellen in 1942. Surviving are two daughters, Jo-Anne Scammell of E. Syracuse and Patti Rae of Mountainview, CA; two sons, Richard of Jonesboro, GA, and Raymond H. Paulder Jr. of Friendswood, TX; three sisters: Lillian Sauer of Washington state, Betty Lou Roderick of Virginia Beach and Roberta Farrington of Sandy Creek; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Bob was a compassionate, determined leader. Flawless senior staff accountant. Bob was Mom's favorite who thoroughly loved to pick on his sisters. Bob fought a courageousbattle with diabetes. She was born in Syracuse and lived in Camillus since 1955. A kindergarten teacher for the Syracuse City School District, Vera retired in 1974 after 36 years. Shetaught at Delaware, Merrick and Charles Andrew Schools. She was a graduate of North High School, Syracuse City Normal School and Syracuse University. Vera was a charter member of the Auxiliary to Community-General Hospital and volunteer for 40 years with 5,000+ hours. She was former president of the Women's Auxiliary of the Salvation Army and active with their Youth Services Committee. Vera was also a charter member of Immanuel United Methodist Church and former president and treasurer of Elizabeth Circle. She was predeceased by her sister, Esther Bitzer. Main Street, Canastota, died peacefully at his home on Monday. He had lived in Canastota all his life, attending the Canastota Schools. Dave was married to Janet Hood for 32 years. He was a well respected, self-employed crop farmer in Canastota for 40 years, retiring in 1983. Dave was a veteran of World War II, serving overseas in the Soloman Islands with the Elite Edson Raiders of the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a Purple Heart and Silver Star recipient. Dave was predeceased by a son, Lance M. Taber. She was formerly of Strathmore Dr. and Sequoia Dr. She was born in Manhattan, NY. She was employed with the credit department of Chase Manhattan Bank, formerly LincolnBank, retiring in 1984. She was a member of the Chase Manhattan Retirees and was a volunteer at Community and St. Joseph's Hospital. Mary was a communicant of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. She was predeceased by her husband, Martin J. White in March 2000. Winters Jr., 83, of Hilton Head Island, S.C., former Vice-Chancellor of Syracuse University, died Saturday, May 7, 2005, at the Hilton Head Regional Medical Center. Born in Winfield, KS, September 21, 1921, he graduated from Southwestern College and earned his PhD from the University of Chicago. He served with honor in the U.S. Navy during WWII in the Pacific and eastern Atlantic waters. Dr. Winters worked for International Harvester, the Presbyterian Church and Drake University before coming to Syracuse in 1956. He served as Dean of University College and became Vice-Chancellor in 1971. He held a faculty appointment in the school of education from 1956 until his retirement in 1986, moving to his vacation home in South Strattford, VT, and to Hilton Head Island in 1998. In Syracuse he served on the boards of Unity Mutual Insurance Co., Syracuse Stage, the former Lincoln Bank, belonged to several clubs and lastly was a member of the Sea Pines Country Club in Hilton Head Island. Upon his retirement, he commented on some of the achievements of his tenure as 13 years of balanced budgets, renovations of older campus buildings, construction of Skytop housing, construction of the Carrier Dome, a revival of S.U. athletic programs, the development of major computer systems, the gathering of a new, young administrative staff, and participation in the development of professional theater and the Syracuse Stage. While at University College, there was development of off-campus centers, foundation grants for women and adult education, Peace Corps training and the Crusade for Opportunity. He is survived by his wife Ann of Hilton Head Island; four sons, Tobey of West Simsbury, CT, Charles, of West Hurley, NY, Timothy, of Germantown, MD, and Benjamin, of Alexandria, VA; and five grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 18, 2005, at 4 p.m. at Crouse College, Syracuse University Campus. Zahler, 82, of Fulton, died Monday at Lee Memorial Hospital in Fulton. Born in Sterling, he resided in the Volney-Fulton area. He retired from Carpenter's Local 747 in Syracuse as a carpenter throughout Onondaga and Oswego coun-ties. He was a member of Hiram Lodge 144 F.&A.M., Fulton. Walter served with the military police in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a ham radio operator for many years.
