Carmody, James Matthew Patrick Patrick Carmody May 18, 2005 James Matthew Patrick Carmody, 84, of Red Bank, NJ and formerly of Washington, D.C. and Syracuse, NY, died Wednesday, May 18, 2005 at Navesink Harbor, Red Bank. He had been employed as a Policy Analyst at the Agency for Healthcare Quality and Research at the US Public Health Service, Rockville, MD for 27 years retiring in 1997. Prior to this he was a Jesuit Priest entering the Society for Jesus in 1938 and retiring in 1972. While a Jesuit, he had co-authored two books on Medieval Church Philosophy in 1960 and later a bibliography on Medical Ethics. He also was a Professor of Ethics and Philosophy at LeMoyne College, Syracuse, NY from 1954 to 1970. He graduated from Georgetown University receiving his B.A., his M.A. from Fordham University, and his Ph.D. in Sacred Theology from Gregorian Ponitifical University, in Rome, Italy. He was a member of the Alumni organizations for both Georgetown University and LeMoyne College. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council in Syracuse, NY, a Communicant of St. James RC Church, Red Bank, NJ and St. Catharine's RC Church, Spring Lake. He was also very active in Family Life Groups and was active assisting Puerto Rican Groups in Jersey City. Born in Jersey City to John A. and Anastasia Crossan Carmody, he had lived in Syracuse, NY, and then from 1970 until 2003 in Washington, D.C. before moving to Red Bank, NJ two years ago. He was predeceased by his two brothers, John A. and Crossan Carmody and his sister, Mary Margaret Courtney. Hirshman, Jean "Red" May 23, 2005 Jean "Red" Hirshman, 93, of the Oaks, passed away on Tuesday, May 23, 2005, at Menorah Park. After retiring from the shoe business, Mrs. Hirshman moved to Florida. She returned to Syracuse in 1997 when she resumed an active role as matriarch of the Rubenstein family. She was a former member of Temple Adath Yeshurun and its Sisterhood. Jean also spearheaded a knitting project among friends in Florida who made and donated scores of baby afghans to the hospital. She was predeceased in 1960 by her husband Sidney Hirshman. Jean was the daughter of the late Louis and Celia Rubenstein, and the sister of the late Jack and Morton Rubenstein. O'Leary, 81, of Cortland, N.Y., entered everlasting life on May 23, 2005, at Crouse Hospital Coronary Care Unit in Syracuse. Mary was born on January 6, 1924, in Cortland, N.Y., the youngest child of Clarence and Gertrude (Littleton) Clark. She was a graduate of St. Mary's School in Cortland and Powelson Business Institute in Syracuse. Mary is survived by her husband of 58 years, Robert J. O'Leary of Cortland; daughter, Sheila O'Leary Vormwald of Cortland; sons, Patrick of Liverpool, N.Y., and Dr. Michael of Manlius, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Kristen Vormwald Case and Joseph Vormwald of Cortland, David Vormwald of Gansevoort, N.Y., and Sean Vormwald of Ithaca, N.Y.; four great-grandchildren, Carlotta, Kirkland and Gildon Case of Cortland, and Ryan Vormwald of Gansevoort; and many nieces and nephews. Early in her adult life, Mary was employed at Cortland Memorial Hospital, Freeville Lumber, and the Boy Scouts of America. In 1967, Mrs. O'Leary began a 34-year career as campus minister at the Catholic Newman Community at S.U.N.Y. Cortland, working with her close friend and colleague, Rev. Edward O'Heron, for whom the Newman Center is now named. Mary was an inspiration and confidant to thousands of Cortland State students and Newman Hall parish community members. Mrs. O'Leary served on the board of the Newman Foundation, which named her as their recipient of the annual "Heart to Heart" award in recognition of her long and faithful service to the Newman Community at Cortland. Additionally, she served on the boards of Catholic Charities in Cortland and the Diocese of Syracuse. She was a long-standing and fervent supporter of St. Mary's School and various activities associated with the school. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, May 27, at 11 a.m., at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Cortland, the Rev. John Fenlon presiding, assisted by local clergy. A life resident, he was a communicant of Our Lady of Pompei Church and a member of its Holy Name Society, and had golfed in its golf league for many years. He bowled in the MidCity Bowling League at the Syracuse Bowling Center for 30 years. He enjoyed his own vegetable garden every year. Mr. Pontillo had been a union painter with Zirilli Paint Co. for many years and later retired from Sans Painting and Decorating. He was a member of the Painters and Decorators Union. "Bill" Sutliff, of Chenango Bridge, NY, beloved husband and father went to be with the Lord on Monday, May 16, 2005 at the New York State Veterans Home, Oxford, NY. He was predeceased by his parents, Mildred and Simeon Sutliffof Binghamton; a sister, Marilyn J. LaPenna of Solvay; and a brother, Richard J. Sutliff of Syracuse. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Ruth J. Sutliff; a daughter, Shauna I. Sutliff, New York City and Binghamton; and a son, Shane G. Sutliff, Syracuse; a sister-in-law, Doris F. Sutliff, Syracuse; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was a graduate of Binghamton North High School, Syracuse University and served during World War II in the 75th Division, U.S. Army, in Europe. He was a 37 year employee of GAF/Anitec/International Paper Company, Binghamton. He served in various capacities there and in later years was Manager Raw Material Inventory Control and Warehousing. He was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Chenango Bridge. Being an avid sportsman, he enjoyed fishing, birdwatching, golfing and hunting. He was a member of the Broome County Naturalists Club. As a member of the National Rifle Association, he was a certified rifle instructor, a certified pistol instructor and Voluntary Practical Firearms Instructor. He also was a member for many years of the GAF Pistol Team. He was a member of the American Legion, Joseph P. Mangan Post, Upper Chenango Street and enjoyed being a member of the Masonic Temple for many years. Upon retirement, he attended numerous classes for 12 years at Binghamton University. A voracious reader, William was keenly interested in Biblical Studies, comparative religions, foreign languages and chess. William found that the classes and conferences at BU provided him with a dynamic and intellectual forum and he thoroughly enjoyed the professors and staff. The family wishes to thank the staff of the Veterans Home for the remarkable, extraordinary, compassionate care given to William. Private services were held for the immediate family with the Rev. Snook Temple, 88, of Fayetteville, died Monday at the Northeast Medical Center in Fayetteville. Mrs. Temple was born in Syracuse, has resided in Fayetteville for two years, and had resided in East Syracuse for many years and in Chittenango for 30 years. She was a 1937 graduate of the Syracuse Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. She had worked as a registered nurse for Dr. Thomas Snyder in East Syracuse. She was a communicant of St. Matthew's Church in East Syracuse, was a Eucharistic minister, and did the church's linens for 50 years. Wife of the late John who died 1998.
