Born in Eger, Hungary, he was a survivor of the Holocaust. Following the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, he brought his family to the United States in 1957. He retired from the SUNY College of Forestry in 1970 and continued to work for the remainder of his life as a realtor, and later, as owner of the International Translation Service. He was a recipient of Onondaga County's Citizenship Award. He was also a champion swimmer, active in Masters swimming competitions until the age of 91. He is survived by Margaret, his wife of 64 years, and his sons, John and Steve; daughters-in-law, Trudi and Luisa; as well as seven grandchildren and one great-grandson. Casbarra, 87, died Thursday at home. Miss Casbarra was a native of Frankfort and moved to North Syracuse in 1994 to be closer to members of her family. She is survived by her sisters, Mary Casbarra and Susan (Carl) Fairclough both of North Syracuse; and her brother, Silver (Hazel) Casbarra of Wrentham, MA. Additional survivors include six nieces and nephews; 17 grandnieces and nephews and three great-grandnieces and nephews all of whom she lovingly doted upon. Miss Casbarra graduated from Oswego State College and tried her hand at teaching but changed to a civil service career at Rome's Air Force Base retiring after 36 years as a materials supply supervisor. She was born in Amboy, daughter of the late Martin and Harriett Everson Foil. She was a teacher in the Central Square district, retiring in 1973 from the Cleveland Elementary School. She was a member and Trustee of Amboy Center United Methodist Church. She was the Historian for the Town of Amboy. She was a member and Historian of the Amboy Chapter and Lake Ontario Chapter of the Eastern Star. Her husband, Earl died in 1960. A daughter, Beatrice Lou Dunn died in 1944. September 7, 2005 Margaret Mengel Featherly, 92, formerly of Brighton Towers, passed away Wednesday at Syracuse Home Association. Margaret attended Assumption School, graduated from Franklin School and attended North High. Margaret served in the Army as a medical technician during WWII. She was a practical nurse at Syracuse Psychiatric Hospital for 32 years before retiring in 1971. She was a communicant of St. John the Baptist Church. She was predeceased by her husband Henry in 1966. Kozlowski, 91, of Clarks Mills, died on Wednesday, September 7, 2005 at the Presbyterian Home for CNY. He was born in Utica, NY on August 10, 1914, the son of Thomas and Anna Kosmoska Kozlowski and attended local schools. On October 15, 1938, he married Marian E. Kozlowski in the Church of Holy Rosary in Williamsport, PA, she died in 1999. Walt owned and operated Walt's Garage in Clarks Mills for several years retiring in 1972. He was a member of the Church of the Annunciation in Clarks Mills. He is survived by one daughter, Maryann Deziley of Liverpool; three grandchildren, Walter Deziley of Syracuse, Wendy Deziley of Clarks Mills and Lorraine Deziley of Liverpool; two great-grandchildren, Araya and Amya; a brother, Thomas and his wife, Genevieve Kozlowski of Whitesboro; two sister, Anna Acee of Clinton and Frances and her husband, Peter Carparelli of New Hartford; one sister-in-law, Agatha Slivinski of Okala, FL; also surviving, several nieces and nephews. Patalita, Cecilia Dybas September 7, 2005 Cecilia Dybas Patalita, 78, of Dewitt, died on Wednesday, September 7, 2005, at Crouse Memorial Hospital with her family at her side. She was born in Utica on October 20, 1926, the daughter of John and Mary Cherubin Dybas. She attended Holy Trinity Grammar School, and graduated from Utica Free Academy. She then received a B.S. from Syracuse University and continued on to receive a master's degree in political science from the Maxwell School of Citizenship at S.U. She also studied Polish Language and Literature at Columbia University in New York and at Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland. Cecilia was married to Louis Patalita on July 1, 1950, in Holy Trinity Church, Utica; a loving union shared for over 55 years. She was a charter member and served as president for over 25 years of the Polish Heritage Club of Syracuse and was elected director of the American Council for Polish Culture. She was a member of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Syracuse and Holy Cross Church in Dewitt. Cecilia was proud of her Polish heritage and was devoted to many phases of promoting Polish culture. Her hobby was genealogy and her family's history which took her several times on research journeys to Poland. Her survivors include her beloved husband Louis Patalita of Dewitt; two sons and their wives, John and Beata Patalita of Fayetteville and David and Molly Patalita of Alexandria, VA; four granddaughters, Elizabeth Anne, Mary Margaret, Aleksandra and Emilia; a sister, Gloria Dybas of Utica; two sisters-in-law, Mary Jane Dybas of IL and Mary Pogozelski of Utica. Also included are an uncle and his wife, Louis and Eleanor Cherubin of Schenectady; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Published in the Syracuse Post Standard on 9/9/2005. Pirro, John H. September 7, 2005 Born in 1909, Mr. Pirro graduated from Christian Brothers Academy in 1926. He attended Syracuse and Niagara Universities, later earning his law degree from St. Johns College of Law. He was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1936, working initiallywith the law firm of Stone and Marvin. As an attorney, Mr. Pirro specialized in the areas of estate and criminal law, and developed a wide ranging practice in all matters of civil law. By 1948, he helped found the partnership of Deegan, Pirro, Edgecomb and Mead. A well-known attorney in Syracuse for over 65 years, Mr. Pirro had worked with generations of lawyers and others in the Central New York legal community. He was a member of both the Onondaga County and New York State Bar Associations. He was elected in 1959 to the first of two terms as 4th District Councilor on the Syracuse City Council. As a member of the Council, he served on the Public Safety, Public Health and Parks and Recreation committees, and was Chairman of the Airport Committee. In this capacity, he supervised the construction of Syracuse's Hancock Airport, serving as Chairman of the October 6, 1962 Airport Dedication Ceremonies. He was also well-known as chairman of the city's Ninth Ward Republican Committee, often referred to as "The Fighting Ninth". He was very involved in the Syracuse Nationals Basketball Club, having worked to incorporate the club, and then serving as Vice President and secretary for the organization throughout the team's history. Most memorable was the team's 1955 National Professional Basketball Championship over Ft. Wayne, and the six week goodwill tour that followed, traveling with the team throughout Europe. He was inducted in 1993 to the Syracuse Bowling Association Hall of Fame, having been a member for many years, and having served as president from 1944 to 1945. John was a member of numerous other clubs and organizations, most notably the "Boys Around the Corner" (The BAC Club), the Roman's AC, the Foresters of America, the Rubicon Club, the Knights of Columbus, and the Lakeshore Golf and Country Club. He was an active member of the Lincoln Club for many years, from its inception. His wife of 22 years, Helen Romano Pirro, passed away in 1997. For his many accomplishments, and in particular for his contributions to the Syracuse community especially in the fields of law and government, we are proud to honor John H. Pirro as 2002 recipient of the Joseph J. Pietrafesa Award. John was the son of Joseph T. Pirro, Sr. and Mary Parella Pirro, he was the last of five children who included Nicholas J. Pirro, Sr., Angela DelVecchio, Joseph T. Pirro, Jr., and Rita DelVecchio. The family of John Pirro would like to note a special thanks to his in-laws, the Romano Family, and to Virginia Muolo, for the special care and love they gave him during his illness. (Smith) Ried, 81, longtime resident of Syracuse and Wellesley Island, NY, died Tuesday, September 6, 2005 at Crouse Hospital after a courageous battle with lung cancer. She was the daughter of Nina Clarke and Chester W. Inglehart. A graduate of Nottingham High School and Cornell University, she retired in 1989 after 40 years teaching English and reading at Porter, North High and Henninger in Syracuse, as well as teaching courses in speech at Syracuse University and Onondaga Community College. A life member of the National Education Association, she actively served the Syracuse Teachers' Association and New York State Teachers' Association.
