September 8, 2005 Russell H. Adams Sr., 70, of Syracuse, passed away on Thursday after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. At the time of his death, he was comforted by his entire family. Russell retired after 43 years with Lockheed Martin. He was a coach for nine years with Eastwood Little League and had been affiliated with the Eastwood Bears Football since 1970, where he received the prestigious John Smith Founders Award and Recognition of Excellence Award. Russell is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Marsha (Lamb); two wonderful sons, Russell Jr. (Nanette) and Joseph (Marianne); three beautiful daughters: Deborah (Chuck) Patterson, and Colleen and Shannon Adams; five beloved grandchildren: Matthew and Eliza Patterson, Kyle Adams, and Chris and Ben Lawrence; several nieces and nephews. Chase, Phyllis Romano September 10, 2005 Phyllis Romano Chase, beloved wife and soul mate of Howard Chase, went to her eternal rest on September 10, 2005. Phyllis was an adored mother, grandmother, sister, educator, coach and life force. Her passions included her family, friends and mentoring others. Her cooking was legendary, and her home was a place of welcome, warmth, music and laughter. A lifelong teacher, Phyllis held a BS in English from Daeman College, a master's in education from Towson University and a master's in reading from Syracuse University. She was a high school teacher for many years and later worked as a counselor at University College before becoming the associate director of Alumni Relations at Syracuse University. Phyllis was a founding member of OASIS and the Women's Fund of Central New York. She was a member of many philanthropic and educational organizations and was especially committed to groups that promoted women's interests. Phyllis was a faithful communicant of St. Lucy's Church in Syracuse. She was an enthusiastic role model for many young women who were fortunate enough to cross her path. Phyllis will be lovingly remembered by her children: Howie and his wife, Fionna; Cindy and her husband, Ron; Amy and her husband, Chris; Marc and his wife, Ann; daughter Stacy and her grandchildren Zoe, Eli, Katie, Tucker, Taylor and Casey. Ron retired from Cazenovia College, where he worked in the maintenance department. He had previously worked for the Brae Loch Inn in Cazenovia and for Bristol-Myers in Syracuse. Grygiel Sr., William September 9, 2005 William "Bill" Grygiel Sr., 95, of Kirkville, passed away at his home on Friday. Bill was born in New Hartford on September 25, 1909, to Stanley and Mary Lis Grygiel. As a young boy he caddied at the nearby Yahnundasis Golf Club, where he learned to love the game of golf and where he picked up many skills. He was a golf pro at various courses in the area, including Drumlins Golf Club. While working at Drumlins, he built his own course, Towne Isle Golf Club, some 50 years ago and was still owner at the time of his death. He was predeceased by two sons, Bill Grygiel Jr. and Stan C. Grygiel; six brothers, John, Frank, Joe, Ed, Leo and Carl Grygiel; and two sisters, Nellie Green and Sophie Wolf. Nahari, Uri September 8, 2005 Uri Nahari, 81, formerly of Liverpool, passed away Thursday evening at Samaritan Keep Home in Watertown. Born February 14, 1924, in Czechoslovakia, Uri was an avid collector of international stamps. In 1937, the sale of those stamps se-cured his escape from the Holocaust. After arriving in Palestine, which was under British mandate control, Uri joined the Pal-Yam, a naval branch of the Pal-Mach, the fighting force of the Hagana. While in the Pal-Yam, Uri met his future wife. Together they were instrumental in the rescue and resettlement of Jews and the establishment of the state of Israel. In 1967, Uri and his family immigrated to the United States. After settling in the Syracuse area, Uri spent his life working and tending to his family. In retirement, Uri was an avid traveler and a volunteer for many local health and senior agencies. Uri was predeceased by his wife of nearly 57 years, Ruth G. Nahari, in March 2004. Mr. Rimmler was a native of Stetten, Germany, and had lived in the Syracuse area since childhood. He served as an Army medic during WW II. He was a communicant of St.Rose of Lima Church and a former member of the Pastime Athletic Club. After 52 years as an anatomist, Mr. Rimmler retired in 1991 from Upstate University Medical Center. He also had worked with Dr. Philip Armstrong at the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woodshole for 10 summers. Surviving are his wife of 63 years, the former Marion T. Born in Warners, he lived there for 25 years until moving to Baldwinsville. Sandy was employed by Sears Roebuck & Co. of Syracuse for 30 years. He was a Vietnam War veteran. Sandy was a member of Eckanar Clergy and belonged to the Pathfinders Rod and Gun Club of Fulton. Santino taught karate for about 35 years at CNY Karate. Wentworth, 58, died Friday in St. Joseph's Hospital following a valiant battle with cancer. George was a graduate of N. Syracuse High School. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1967 to 1971. George worked his way through the ranks from union welder to engineering at Allied Chemical and was employed 24 years with Carrier Corporation. George was an avid hunter and an accomplished trapshooter for CNY Rod and Gun Club. His camp in the Tug Hill was truly his pride and joy. George will be most remembered for his big heart, quick smile and never-ending jokes. He was predeceased by his parents, George and Shirley, and a brother, Richard. September 10, 2005 Stephen Francis Whisenand, 73, of 634 Mertens Avenue, Syracuse, died September 10 peacefully at home from complications of emphysema due to smoking. Born on June 3, 1932, in Hastings, NE, he was the son of Ernest and Grace Whisen-and. Mr. Whisenand received his mechanical engineering degree from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1956 and was a graduate of the United States Submarine School in Groton, CT. He was active in the U.S. Naval Reserve and served for many years as commander of a Naval Reserve unit on the Great Lakes. He retired as a commander, USNR. During his career, he was employed by Pall Trinity in Cortland, NY; Honeywell Corp.; and retired in 1998 as president of Ross Equipment Co. Long an avid skier, Mr. Whisenand was involved with the Onondaga Ski Club and was very active as a volunteer with AARP. He was for many years a volunteer with CONTACT, Petit Branch Library, Dr. King School and teaching abroad. He is survived by his wife, Carol Decker; his children by his first marriage to Lucia Beadel Whisenand of Syracuse: Lucia Maria Whisenand of Glen Cove, NY; Stephen F. Woodman, Albert September 9, 2005 Albert Woodman, 89, of Sherbrook Apartments in Cortland, passed away at Cortland Care Center on Friday. He was born in Syracuse on May 5, 1916, and lived there until 2000, when he moved to Cortland. He worked for many years at the former B&H Trucking Company and then at Carrier Corporation, where he retired as manager of facilities in 1982. Survivors: three sons: Kenneth and his wife, Marie, of Cortland; John and his wife, Jane, of Hendersonville, NC; and Gary and his wife, Patricia, of Dunnellon, FL; 16 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Mr. Woodman was predeceased by his loving wife of 46 years, Stella Steckiewicz, in 1981; two sons, Richard in 1989 and Robert in 2004; and a grandson, Richard, in 2000.
