Chase, Phyllis Romano September 10, 2005 Phyllis Romano Chase, beloved wife and soul mate of Howard Chase, went to her eternal rest on September 10, 2005. Phyllis was an adored mother, grandmother, sister, educator, coach and life force. Her passions included her family, friends and mentoring others. Her cooking was legendary, and her home was a place of welcome, warmth, music and laughter. A lifelong teacher, Phyllis held a BS in English from Daeman College, a master's in education from Towson University and a master's in reading from Syracuse University. She was a high school teacher for many years and later worked as a counselor at University College before becoming the associate director of Alumni Relations at Syracuse University. Phyllis was a founding member of OASIS and the Women's Fund of Central New York. She was a member of many philanthropic and educational organizations and was especially committed to groups that promoted women's interests. Phyllis was a faithful communicant of St. Lucy's Church in Syracuse. She was an enthusiastic role model for many young women who were fortunate enough to cross her path. Phyllis will be lovingly remembered by her children: Howie and his wife, Fionna; Cindy and her husband, Ron; Amy and her husband, Chris; Marc and his wife, Ann; daughter Stacy and her grandchildren Zoe, Eli, Katie, Tucker, Taylor and Casey. Essi-Kiefer, Majida September 10, 2005 Majida Essi-Kiefer was born February 3, 1944, in Amman, Jordan. Loving sister, mother, grandmother, aunt and wife, she passed away Saturday, September 10, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Majida was small in stature but big of heart, strength, patience and devotion, always encouraging and guiding others through their individual challenges. Her unconditional devotion to her family serves as a hallmark of her life. Her love permeates the inner soul of all she has left behind. Majida worked as a dressmaker and tailor from 1968 to 1984. Majida was also very talented at knitting and needlepoint. In 1984 Majida founded Munjed's Middleastern Cafe, where she remained as head chef until 2004. Majida fought her cancer the way she lived life, with elegance and grace. She will be missed by all who knew her, and she will be forever in our hearts. Gehm, George Edward September 9, 2005 George Edward Gehm peacefully slipped into the arms of his Lord on Friday, September 9, 2005, at Wuesthoff Hospital in Melbourne, FL, surrounded by his loving family and friends. He was born on December 22, 1932, in Syracuse. George enlisted in the United States Army when he was 19 and proudly served his country during the Korean War. He was wounded at the battle of Pork Chop Hill, for which he received a Purple Heart, among other decorations. After his discharge, he returned to Syracuse and was employed by the Department of Public Works for 33 years, retiring as the superintendent of Sewers, Streams and Bridges. George was an avid race fan and enjoyed photography, music, fishing and being with his family and friends, especially his granddaughters. George is survived by his wife of 54 years, Virginia Gehm of Melbourne, FL; his son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Vickie Gehm of Melbourne; and three granddaughters: Kristen, Cori and Casey Gehm, also of Melbourne. Mr. Strusinski was born in Warsaw, Poland, the son of the late Joseph and Kazimiera Strusinski. Mr. Strusinski lived in Buffalo and Syracuse, NY, before moving to Nassau in 1982. He had been employed as a professional engineer with Niagara Mohawk for 35 years, retiring in 1986. Mr. Strusinski was a former Boy Scout leader and a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Nassau.
