September 10, 2005 Ernest F. Baker, 75, passed away on Saturday, September 10, at Birchwood Health Care Center, Liverpool. Ernie was born in Clay and was a life resident of Clay. Ernie worked for the North Syracuse Central School District from 1958 to 1972. He then went to work for BOCES for 33 years, where he was the superintendent of maintenance and grounds, retiring in 1988. Ernie also worked for Meals on Wheels in North Syracuse, and was the vice president of the Clay Historical Association. He was predeceased by his first wife, Dolores. He was born July 21, 1909 in Syracuse and graduated from Central High School, Syracuse University and the University of Buffalo. Walter loved to run. He was a member of Syracuse University's Cross Country Team and competed in long distance races in Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Canada, including two Boston Marathons. During WWII, he served 3 1/2 years with the Red Cross in the South Pacific. He retired in 1974 after 25 years with the New York State Department of Social Services. He served a term as Indian Agent to the Onondaga Nation, was a member of the Board of the LaFayette Library and of the Town of LaFayette Ethics Committee. He was instrumental in starting the lacrosse program at LaFayette High School. Walter is survived by his wife of 65 years, Hollis Bryant Liddiard; a daughter, Eleanor; a son, Phillip; daughter-in-law, Deborah and granddaughter, Lauren. Patello, Esther September 12, 2005 Esther DeFio Patello, 88, passed lovingly back into the arms of her creator at James Square Nursing Home on Monday morning after enduring Alzheimer's Disease for 12 years. She was born in Syracuse and formerly lived on Granville Streetin Lyncourt. She lived in her time of illness as she did before that with courage and strength. She was a seamstress at Learbury's for 35 years and was a member of the Amalgamated Transit Union. She attended and graduated from Felton Tarrant Comptometer School. She also assisted many people to learn the language in order to become citizens of this country. Marcella was a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church, a member of the Happy Roamers and the Marriott Swim Club. She was an avid golfer with the Sunnycrest and Brooklawn golf leagues. Mr. Solomon had been a part of the Central New York Community for over 64 years. He graduated from Millbrook School, Millbrook, New York and Syra-cuse University School of Management with a major in Logistics. After college Mr. Solomon was an officer in the Air Force and studied advanced logistics. He returned to the 174th TAC Fighter Group. After military service he and his brother, Paul continued the Paul Jeffrey Warehouse Company. For over 30 years they grew the business into a national 3rd party logistics company with warehousing, trucking, packaging, billing and pallet manufacturing. His primary area of expertise was productivity, cost control and administration. In 1988 he and his brother merged the Paul Jeffrey operation into the public corporation GATX. He became Vice President of Operations with operations throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico. After retiring from the logistics field he helped form the Exponential Business Development Company, an Upstate venture capital company created to help emerging new Central New York businesses. Most recently he was Chairman of the Board of Smart Pill Diagnostics, an early stage medical device manufacturer of gastrointestinal monitoring equipment. Jeffrey had been active in several local charitable organizations, including the Board of the Syracuse Symphony, the Syracuse Food Bank, past Officer and President of the Temple Society of Concord, member of the Syracuse Jewish Welfare Board, advisor to the Syracuse University Franklin Transportation Program, past Officer and Chairman of WCNY public television and radio, past Treasurer of the Syracuse Interreligious Council, past Treasurer of Syracuse Stage and financial advisor to the Dunbar Center. He also served on the Crouse Irving Memorial Hospital Foundation Board, the Past Presidents Advisory Council for the Temple Society of Concord, was Chairman of the Investment Committee for the Jewish Foundation Board of Central New York, and was most recently Chairman of Hospice and Palliative Care of Central New York. Survived by his wife, Donna Layton; two sons, Neal (Nanci Fleischman) Solomon, Phillip Solomon; two grandchildren, Nathan and Nicholas Solomon; a brother, Paul (Kathy Drumm) Solomon; a sister, Laurie (Robert) Moser; and the children of his wife, Erik Chase and Lisa (Ernest) McFarland; and grandson, Zachary McFarland. Weyer, Mary September 11, 2005 Mary Weyer, 102, formerly of Alterra Wynwood in Manlius, and New Hartford, NY, passed away on Sunday, September 11, 2005. She was born in Adelsberg, Germany, on May 13, 1903, the daughter of Hermann and Pauline Maier Baumgartner. Mary immigrated to the United States in 1926. She married Herman Weyer in 1928 and then moved to the Utica area where she lived until 2002. Her husband Herman was the founder of Standard Insulating Company. He passed away in 1988. Mary is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Elsa and C. Donald Williams, of Syracuse; a granddaughter, Susan Markert Maar (Ric) of DeWitt; a grandson, Edward Charles Markert Jr. (Staci) of Yorktown, Virginia; and a great-granddaughter, Emily Maar of DeWitt.
