September 15, 2005 Mrs. Mary S. Arthur, 97, formerly of Skaneateles, passed away on Thursday, September 15, 2005, at Van Duyn Home and Hospital, Syracuse. She was married for 58 years to Cecil H. Arthur, who predeceased her in 1995. She was born on May 30, 1908, in Auburn, NY. She attended Auburn Business School. Mrs. Arthur worked at the Nye and Wait Co. in Auburn as an accomplished rug designer. She also waited tables at The Krebs in Skaneateles and at Hahn's Pharmacy in Skaneateles. She was an avid bridge player for several years and taught bridge to many friends in her home on State Street Road. She was a wonderful piano player and despite not reading sheet music, she could play beautifully any song she heard by heart. She was a member of St. Mary's of the Lake Church Catholic Church in Skaneateles and a member of St. Mary's Mothers' Club. She loved her church and her family and her many close friends. She was the last of nine children of the Frank H. Steigerwald family of Auburn. She is survived by her two daughters, Virginia A. Herr- mann and Mary Frances Laskie, both of Skaneateles; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Elizabeth Steigerwald and Mrs. Marie Steigerwald, both of Auburn; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Arthur was predeceased by her fraternal twin, Josephine Dermody, in 1986, and her twin sons, Michael and James, in 1943. Barzee, Robert James September 4, 2005 Robert James Barzee, 76, of Elizabethtown, KY, died September 4, 2005. A native of Syracuse, NY, he owned Village Collision in North Syracuse for 20 years. He was secretary of the Greater Syracuse Autobody Association, a volunteer firefighter with the South Bay Fire Dept., a member of the Kasoag Lake Trailblazers and South Shore Snowmobile Association. He raced at Brewerton and Fulton Speedways, and later sponsored the late Jim Shampine at Oswego Speedway for many years. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, and a member of the American Legion, a communicant of St. James Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus in Elizabethtown. He was an avid golfer who started at Lake Shore Country Club, Cicero as a boy. He was predeceased by three sons, John, Gerard, and Thomas Barzee; a daughter, Jana; his parents, John and Loretta Ehrle Barzee; a brother, John F. Barzee; and two sisters, Lorraine Barzee and Mary Tone. He retired from Carrier as a purchasing agent and supervisor and also worked for Fay Drug Stores. He was predeceased by two brothers, Alonzo "Bud" and Horace Dean, and three sisters, Marietta Littebrant, Edwina Bauer and Doris Vastag. (Fura) Paone, 83, of 123 Garfield Ave., Oneida, died Wednesday afternoon, September 14, 2005, at St. Luke's Memorial Hospital, where she had been a patient for the past two and a half weeks. Cecilia was born in Oneida on August 3, 1922, as the tenth of 11 children born to Albert and Mary Cutale Fura, who immigrated to the United States from Italy in 1903. A lifelong resident of the area, she graduated from Oneida High School, Class of 1941. She married Vincent Paone on March 25, 1950, at St. Agatha's Church in Canastota. Prior to her retirement in October of 1985, Cecelia worked for Madison County as a purchasing agent and clerk to the Board of Supervisors, with 29 years of service. She had been previously employed for several years as the legal secretary to the city attorney, Anthony Gambitta. After retirement, she enjoyed traveling with her husband, reading, cooking, baking and spending time with her family. She was also very active in planning and attending her high school class reunions. Cecelia had served as treasurer for 12 years for both the Madison County Republican Committee and the New York State Association of Counties and was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church. Surviving besides her husband, Vincent, are two daughters and one son-in-law, Nena and Richard Crowne and Susan Smith, all of Oneida; four grandchildren: Amy Crowne of Clay; Jeannette and her husband, Kraig Hatch, of Oneida; Rachel Smith of Mountain View, CA; and Chad Smith of Oneida; four great-granddaughters: Kara, Darryl "DD," Laura and Emma Hatch; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Sue White of Oneida and Mary and Virgil Salm of Bradenton, FL; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Spadotto, Beverly Loughlin September 13, 2005 Beverly Loughlin Spadotto, 74, of Syracuse, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and aunt, passed away peacefully Tuesday morning, surrounded by her loving family. Bev was a graduate of Onondaga Valley Academy. She was em-ployed by Electrolux as an assistant to the president. She married the love of her life and is predeceased by Ted Spadotto. Bev was a trail blazer for women's rights as she raised her four daughters while helping Ted build their successful company. She was an avid bowler and was rewarded with many honors and awards. Bev was the vice president of the WIBC before she retired to Charleston, S.C., where she resided for 27 years. Bev came home three years ago and surrounded herself with her family. She loved her home, especially her yard and the fun family gatherings that were held there. She loved being Irish and all that it entailed. During those family get-togethers, Bev would often be heard singing a tune or telling a joke. Bev loved her country, flowers, a good box of chocolates, going out to dinner, home remedies, watching tennis and old movies, attending grandchildren's events, and playing and winning pitch. Beverly is survived by her four daughters, Beverly Spadotto of California, Dianne (Danny) Louer of Syracuse, Robin (Bob) Henty of Sennett, Dolores Spadotto of Syracuse; stepson, Theodore (Carm) of Camillus; stepdaughter, Joanne Spadotto-Deitz of Syracuse. She was the super grandmother of 10, great-grandmother of six, and loving aunt of too many to count. Her fun-loving spirit will remain with all of us. Published in the Syracuse Post Standard on 9/18/2005. Sparrow, Kenneth F. September 15, 2005 Kenneth F. Sparrow, 99, of Syracuse, died on Thursday at Community General Hospital. A native of Yonkers, NY, Kenneth resided in Syracuse since he completed his studies at the Oswego Normal School (SUNY at Oswego). He worked for the Syracuse Newspapers, The Herald, Herald Journal and Herald American for nearly 50 years. During his career, he was a reporter, assistant city editor and from 1943 until 1958 he was the city editor. In 1958, he was named business editor and held this position until his retirement in 1973. As business editor, Mr. Sparrow wrote a Sunday column about area businesses and the affairs of the local economy. His many years as a reporter and editor gave Ken a knowledge of the city that he shared with the readers of his columns and his colleagues at the newspaper. In 2003, he was inducted into the Syracuse Press Club's Wall of Distinction. He was also a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral, where he served in various lay positions including clerk of the Vestry, head usher and president of the Men's Club. Ken was an avid reader, a railroad enthusiast and a New York Yankees fan. He was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Catherine, in 1995. His sister, Ruth A. Sparrow, died in 1984. He is survived by his two sons, Kenneth R. Sparrow of Longs, SC, and Richard (Patricia) Sparrow of East Syracuse; five grandsons: Scott, Michael, James, Paul and Kelly Sparrow; granddaughter, Laurie Sullivan; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. "Bob" September 15, 2005 Bob Vollick, 74, of East Syracuse, passed away early Thursday morning after a brief but courageous battle with lung cancer. Throughout his illness he was comforted by his family and friends and maintained his spunky sense of humor. Bob retired from the Herald Journal after 43 years of service. He was a graduate of Eastwood High School, Class of 1950. He married his high school sweetheart, Ann Dolores Bove, on September 20, 1952. He was a veteran of the Korean War. Bob was a faithful communicant of St. Matthew's Church. He was a founder of East Syracuse-Minoa Pop Warner football league and a coach for 18 years. He was both an avid golfer and boater. When he wasn't golfing or boating, he spent his days watching his 15 grandchildren's sporting and various events. Survivors: his wife of 53 years, Ann Dolores; his brother, Jack Vollick; his daughter, Dorie, and her husband, Myron Kocan; his son, John Vollick, and his wife, Lisa; his daughter, Jill, and her husband, Michael Hutko; and 15 beloved grandchildren: Janelle, Jeffrey, Jamey, Joel, Justin, Jacy, Brian, Kristin, Eric, Melissa, Timothy, Connie, Jeremy, Joshua and Michaela. Voutsinas, 86, of Parish, NY, went to be with the Lord on Thursday. She was born in Albion on November 19, 1918, to the late Earl and Nora (Spoor) Richardson. Mrs. Voutsinas and her late husband owned many restaurants in the Syracuse and Watertown areas, including the new Plaza Restaurant, until 1964. She was predeceased by her husband, Andrew, in 1988 and a son, Gregory, in 1982. A native of Fulton, he was the son of the late Dr. David K. and Dorothy Dwyer Wagoner. Richard received his master's degree from Columbia University. He retired from Doubleday Publishing in New York City after many years. He was also a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
