He was the son of the late Jacob and Rachel Ball, born and raised in Utica, New York. After attending Utica Free Academy, he graduated from the Wharton School of Finance and Harvard School of Law. Mr. Ball moved to Syracuse in 1939, after practicing law with his brother Ira, who predeceased him in 1985, and became comptroller of Rudolph Brothers' Jewelers until 1963. He then continued in private practice until his retirement in 2001. A 60-year member of the New York State Bar, he was also an active member of Temple Society of Concord and Interfaith Alliance as well as many civic and philanthropic organizations. He was predeceased by his beloved grandson, Daniel Gaubatz, in 1994. Survived by his wife of 66 years, Charlotte; daughters: Judith Ball (Barry Sirota) of Pompton Lakes, New Jersey; Kathy (John) Gaubatz of Coral Gables, Florida; and Jancy Ball of New York and Syracuse. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, J. B. Rudolph (Edith); sister-in-law, Jeanne Ball; and brother-in-law, Richard Blacher. He leaves many nieces and nephews: Ronald (Anne) and Richard (Franci) Rudolph, David (Cherry) Ball and Nicole Ball (Milton Leitenberg), Amy (Ellen Parker), Richard and David (Betsy) Present; cousins; and god-grandchildren: Tamara Garrison, and Arthur and Erica Erignac and their children, William and Clio. Donald Ball was a modest, kind, intelligent, witty person, who set a wonderful and loving example for those around him. He loved the practice of law and was a caring husband and devoted father. Despite his long years with his family and friends, he will be sorely missed. Don will continue to live on in their hearts forever. Bermel was a South Shore, Long Island, bayman for 15 years, after which he became a commercial truck driver. Peter continued to work in the food distribution industry until his retirement from Sysco Foods of Syracuse in May of 2005. Peter was a wonderful father and family man who conveyed his love every day of his life. Carr, of Camillus, died peacefully at home on Saturday at the age of 85. Mary was born in New York City on May 9, 1920, the beloved daughter of Edward F. and Mary J. Carr (both deceased). The family moved to Syracuse in 1924, and her parents were among the founding members of St. James Parish in the Valley. She was valedictorian of the 1937 class of Onondaga Valley Academy and graduated from St. Lawrence University in 1941 and Syracuse University Law School in 1944. Mary began her long career as an attorney with Hancock, Dorr, Ryan and Shove law firm in Syracuse. Upon relocating to New York City, she was employed by Mendes and Mount for 10 years, working after that for the city of New York in the Human Services Administration until she retired at the age of 75. She returned to the Syracuse area in 1994. She was a member of the Onondaga County Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association, American Bar Association and the Democratic candidate for supervisor of the Fourteenth Ward in 1947. After her retirement, she served for six years on the Diocese of Syracuse Commission on Women in Church and Society. In addition, she was a member of Aurora/Lighthouse community and a communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Manhattan and St. James Church in Syracuse. She will be remembered most fondly for her encyclopedic knowledge, her sparkling wit, her panache for wearing hats and the unique gifts she gave. She is survived by her brother, Edward F. Carr, and his wife, Wendy, of Framingham, MA; two sisters, Norah C. Depperman of DeWitt and Kathryn A. Clark of Camillus; and nieces and nephews Elizabeth Carr, Patrick Carr (Kelly), Esther Paris (Gregory), Regina Depperman McCue (Thomas), Mary Frances Clark (Richard Armstrong), John L. Merrick, 89, of Montgomery St., Hamilton, passed away Monday, September 12, 2005, at her home. She was born in Clinton on October 2, 1915, a daughter of Henry and Mary Hughes Crumb. Anna graduated from Clinton High School in 1933 and Keuka College in 1937. On June 21, 1941, in Clinton, she was united in marriage to F. Kermit Merrick. He predeceased her in 1963. Mrs. Merrick taught school in the Cato-Meridian school system and Hamilton Central from 1956 until her retirement in 1975. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Hamilton, and a member of the Cato Star Chapter of the O.E.S. Surviving are her son, Robert D. Merrick, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by a brother, Henry H. Crumb Jr., and a sister, Mrs. Doris Pafka. September 17, 2005 Mary Lynch Schaffer, 92, of 55 Baylis St., Oswego, died Saturday at St. Luke Health Services. A native of Oswego, she was the daughter of James and Martha (Willson) Lynch. She graduated from the Oswego Normal School (now SUNY Oswego) in 1933. She began her career teaching the children at the county tuberculosis sanitarium in Orwell. She then taught fourth grade at Oak Hill School in Oswego. On August 4th, 1943, She married James M. Schaffer of Oswego. They lived in Baltimore, Montreal and Philadelphia. Her husband died in 1970, and Mrs. Schaffer returned to Oswego in 1972. She volunteered in Kingsford Park school library and was a member of the Oswego Weavers Guild. She was an active member of Hall Newman Center at SUNY Oswego and provided hospitality and friendship for its priests and generations of students. She is survived by her sister, Nancy Lynch Hollenbeck of East Syracuse; a daughter, Patricia (David Weissbrodt) Schaffer of Minneapolis, MN; three sons: David (Alice) of Wappingers Falls, John of Potstam and Peter of Syracuse; five grandchildren; two great-grandsons. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hall Newman Center on New St. in Oswego. Burial will be in St. Paul's Cemetery. At her request, there will be no calling hours.
