September 20, 2005 Henry A. "Hank" Brostek, 87, of 304 Third St., Solvay, died Tuesday at Loretto. Born in Syracuse, he lived more than 50 years in Solvay. Henry was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps in WW II and was employed for over 20 years by Kar-nak Corporation, Clark, NJ. He was a communicant of St. Cecilia's Church. Hank was a member of the Geddes Vets, VFW Pennock Post, Adelphi Club and the All American NCAA in Football. His wife, the former Betty Hanahan, died in 2001. He retired in 1984 as Chief of Maintenance for the Syracuse Fire Department after 31 years of service. He was a veteran of the US Army during World War II and a recipi-ent of the Bronze Star. Mr. Coogan also served for 32 years in the Army National Guard with the 50th Armor Division and retired as a Chief Warrant Officer. He is predeceased by his wife, Ann who died in 1984. He is survived by his two daughters, Colleen (Tom) Basile and Elizabeth Stopher both of Syracuse; four sons, Collin (Patti) of Lafayette, Patrick (Cori) of Central Square, James (Boni) of Syracuse, Christopher (Jane) of Waterbury, CT; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews. Doescher, 98, a longtime resident of Hamilton, NY, passed away on September 20, 2005, after a short illness. She had been a resident of Crouse Community Center in Morrisville, NY, for the last several years. Mrs. Doescher was born April 6, 1907, in Silver Creek, NY. After graduating from State Teachers College in Fredonia, NY, in 1927, she worked in the Oneonta Public School System for 42 years, teaching and supervising the art program. While teaching she continued her education at a number of colleges in the U.S., receiving a B.S. degree from Columbia University in 1940 and an M.S. in education at what is now SUNY Oneonta in 1955. While in Oneonta, she was an active member and one of the founders of the Oneonta Community Art Center. As a resident of Hamilton, Mrs. Doescher was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Gift Shop Group at the Hamilton Community Hospital, the Fortnightly Club, the Chenango Water Exercise Group and the Colgate Club of Chenango Valley. She was also a member of the Sigma Chapter of Delta Gamma Society. She married John Hotaling in 1944. He died in 1956. She married Harold Hager, retired Superintendent of Schools in Oneonta and a 1926 graduate of Colgate University, in 1969. They moved to Hamilton the same year. He died in 1978. She married Frederick W. Doescher, a longtime resident of Utica, NY, and also a 1926 graduate of Colgate, in 1981. He died in 1989. Mrs. Doescher is survived by three stepsons, Charles W. Hager of Hickory, NC, Robert K. Doescher of Emmaus, PA, and William F. Doescher of Scarsdale, NY; 16 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren. Hoehn, Sr. on December 24, 1943 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Rome, NY. Mr. Hoehn died on May 4, 2002. Mrs. Hoehn was an Administration Supply Specialist for the Department of Defense at Griffis Air Force Base, Rome, NY and in Joliet, Illinois, she retired in 1966. While living in Florida she was a Teacher's Assistant for Panama City School Board. Mrs. Hoehn had been living in the Auburn area since 2000. He was a native of Marcellus and a graduate of Marcellus High School, Cayuga Community College, and Syracuse University where he received his law degree. Kevin began his ca-reer as an Assistant District Attorney in Syracuse and served as Town Justice of the Town of Onondaga, before being elected County Court Judge. He was the youngest person in New York State to attain this position. For the past five years he has been in private practice with his sister Martha Mulroy. His father John H. Mulroy died in 1999. Kevin is survived by his daughters, Jessica and Caitlin Mulroy of Marcellus and Syracuse; his mother, Virginia S. O'Hara, 80, of Syracuse, passed away Wednesday at Crouse Hospital. She was a native of Manhattan, NY, and graduated from Walton High School in Bronx, NY. Lois was a loving mother and grandmother. She was a very strong and de-termined woman who overcame many obstacles in her life. In recent years, she fought valiantly against lung disease. Her strong spirit and faith in God enabled her to survive many years beyond what was expected. Lois retired after several years of employment with John Hancock Insurance. She was a member of St. Stephen Lutheran Church, was an avid reader, and enjoyed opera. Survivors include her husband of 41 years, Michael R.; her daughter, Susan E. Winans and her husband Peter S.; her daughter, Christine M. Fintak and her husband Michael E.; her grandson, Peter S. Winans Jr. and his wife Kelly, and her great-granddaughter, Jordan; her grandson, Robert J. Winans; her granddaughter, Jennifer Fintak; and her brother, George Hoffman and his wife Margaret. Palumbo, Rose Malley September 21, 2005 Rose Malley Palumbo, 86, the widow of the late Robert Palumbo, of Boyle Center, formerly of 77 Hamilton Ave., Auburn, died Wednesday in Auburn Memorial Hospital. A native of Eastwood, Rose had lived most of her life in Auburn. She had been employed at Robert Halls and The Big Store. She was a communicant of St. Francis Church. Surviving are two daughters, Elaine Balyszak and her husband William, and Michelle Jones and her husband Thomas, all of Auburn; a sister, Elizabeth Vaughan of California; two grandchildren, Robert Balyszak, and Jennifer Herbert and her husband Christopher; several nieces and nephews. Petrera, Nicola September 20, 2005 Nicola Petrera, 54, of Liverpool, passed away Tuesday at St. Joseph's Hospital surrounded by his family. He was born in Bari, Italy and had lived in Syracuse for 35 years. Nicola retired from New Venture Gear after 31 years and was a communicantof Our Lady of Pompei Church. Nicola was a very devoted husband, father and grandfather. He also dedicated his life to attend every soccer game his son participated in. Slingerland, G. Irene September 19, 2005 G. Irene Slingerland, of Clearwater, Florida, died peacefully on Monday at the age of 84. Irene was born in Syracuse, on January 28, 1921. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, John Slingerland; her daughter, Jean (Jack) Emerson, of Marcellus; her grandson, J.P. (Sheila) Emerson, of Jamesville; her granddaughter, Beth Emerson of Clay; her brothers, H. September 17, 2005 Irene S. Thompson, 86, died September 17, of cancer, at Francis House in Syracuse. Born in New York City, she lived in Gainesville, Florida, from 1955 until 2001, when she moved to The Nottingham. Thompson was a 1939 magna cum laude graduate of Adelphi College (now University) in Garden City, NY, and earned M.A. degrees from both NYU and the University of Florida, where she completed additional graduate study in American literature. She taught at the high school level for many years, and then at the University of Florida for two decades, beginning in 1966. At UF, she was the founder of the Women's Studies Program, and also was the University's first Gender Equity Officer. The Irene Thompson Scholarship for undergraduate and graduate students was established in her honor. Thompson wrote extensively in the fields of women's literature and feminist issues. As a founding member of the Modern Language Association's Committee on Women's Concerns, she co-edited two books: Stepping off the Pedestal: Academic Women in the South (1982), and The Road Retaken: Women Re-enter the Academy (1985). Thompson was active in numerous professional, civic, and women's organizations. Since her arrival in Central New York, she was a patron of the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, and was involved in numerous activities at The Nottingham. In the spring of 2005 she was named the Nottingham's "Resident of the Year." Irene Thompson is survived by her daughter, Margaret Susan; her brother, Eugene Siegle of New Rochelle, and several nieces and nephews. Her husband, Professor Arthur W. Thompson, died in 1965. Burial will be in Gainesville, Florida, where a memorial service will be held. September 20, 2005 Joan Young, 71, of Mattydale, passed away Tuesday at home surrounded by her loving family. Born in Syracuse, NY, she retired after 30 years with Roth Bros. Smelting Co. Joan was a loving mother and grandmother, and was a member of the Luther Memorial Lutheran Church. She was predeceased by two sisters and two brothers.
