September 20, 2005 Henry A. "Hank" Brostek, 87, of 304 Third St., Solvay, died Tuesday at Loretto. Born in Syracuse, he lived more than 50 years in Solvay. Henry was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps in WW II and was employed for over 20 years by Kar-nak Corporation, Clark, NJ. He was a communicant of St. Cecilia's Church. Hank was a member of the Geddes Vets, VFW Pennock Post, Adelphi Club and the All American NCAA in Football. His wife, the former Betty Hanahan, died in 2001. Surviving are his daughter, Rita (Fred) Ciarla of Charlotte, NC; son, Henry A. Brostek Jr. of Westminster, SC; brother, William Brostek of Syracuse; grandsons, Adam Ciarla of Charlotte, NC, Aaron Ciarla of Auburn, AL, and Robert Brostek of Rochester; granddaughters, Jessica Johnston (Joseph) of Charlotte, NC, Erin and Katherine Brostek of Eliot, ME. Services will be at 10:15 a.m. Friday at Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus, and at 11 a.m. in St. Cecilia's Church where a funeral Mass will be celebrated. (Kaplan) Carmen, a lifelong resident of Syracuse, died Wednesday, September 21, 2005 surrounded by her family at her residence in Manlius after a long battle with breast cancer. She was a graduate of Nottingham High School and Syracuse University. Most of her professional career was spent teaching at HW Smith Elementary School. Gerri was a beloved teacher who was an inspiration to many students. After retiring from the Syracuse School District, she worked at the Syracuse Hebrew Day School. Mrs. Carmen was a member of Congregation Beth Sholom-Cherva Shas, Young Israel-Shaarei Torah and the Lake Placid Temple. She was co-president of NA'AMAT, a life member of Hadassah and a member of the Adirondack Mountain Club. Gerri was the owner of the Olde Barn Spinnery and was an avid reader, spinner, weaver, gardener and world traveler. Survived by her loving husband of 40 years, Dr. Jeffrey A. Carmen, daughters, Lisa (Dr. Robert) Weiss and Rebecca Carmen, and son, Jonathan (Margaret) Carmen; three grandchildren, Anne and Eli Weiss and William Carmen; sister, Joyce (Alvin) Mintz; and a brother, Howard (Mary Anne) Kaplan. She was dearly loved by many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. on Friday, September 23 at Congregation Beth Sholom Chevra Shas on Patsy Lane in DeWitt. Born in Rochester, he lived in Camillus most of his life. Joe worked as a plant manager at the Onondaga County Water Authority. He was an Army veteran. Joe was a communicant of Holy Family Church. He enjoyed bowling, gardening, baseball and boating. He was predeceased by his wife, Ruth DeVoldre. Surviving are his daughter, Mary Jo Stone of Mexico; sons, John DeVoldre of Old Forge, Joseph DeVoldre Jr. of Camillus; and grandchildren, Johanna Stone and Mark DeVoldre. A native of Eastwood, Rose had lived most of her life in Auburn. She had been employed at Robert Halls and The Big Store. She was a communicant of St. Francis Church. He was born in Bari, Italy and had lived in Syracuse for 35 years. Nicola retired from New Venture Gear after 31 years and was a communicantof Our Lady of Pompei Church. Nicola was a very devoted husband, father and grandfather. He also dedicated his life to attend every soccer game his son participated in. He served in the Army National Guard for 15 years, was a member of Solvay Hilltop Social Club, and was a member and manager of the Tyrol Club in Solvay.
