"Ginny" September 23, 2005 Virginia "Ginny Doolittle Flavin, 84, of East Syracuse, passed away Friday, September 23, 2005, at St. Joseph's Hospital. She was the wife of the late Anthony "Pat" Flavin, who predeceased her in 1993. She was well-known throughout On-ondaga County for her charitable work. Ginny was a co-founder of the Second Time Around Store at St. Matthew's Church in East Syracuse. The store, which started as a one-room operation in the church basement over 30 years ago, grew to fill every room in the basement today. Proceeds from the store support the St. Matthew's Human Development Fund and the food pantry, which serves the entire East Syracuse community. Her devotion to helping others was widely recognized. In 1992 she received the YWCA Imperative Award. She was the recipient of the Sister Mary Vera Award in 1996, and in 2000 she was honored as the Onondaga Country Senior Citizen of the Year. She was the daughter of the late Leslie A. and Zada Alger Doolittle. Bob was a graduate of St. Patrick's Academy and proudly served his country during the Korean War with the U.S. Navy, where he was stationed on the submarine Dogfish. He was a former Binghamton police officer, co-owner of "Swat" Sullivan's and was a former member of Teamsters Local 693. He retired as a bridge inspector for the New York State Dept. of Transportation in Syracuse and baker at Peter's Market. Bob was also a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus, B.P.O.E. Elks, the American Legion (Ghost Post) #1647 and St. John the Evangelist Holy Name Society. Bobby was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Mary (Cooney) Heslin; daughter, Kathleen; and brother, James "Red" Heslin. Metcalf, Richard Randolph "Rich" Randolph Metcalf September 22, 2005 Richard "Rich" Randolph Metcalf, 80, of Camillus, departed to his most secret of trout streams on Thursday evening, surrounded by his loving daughters and two of his grandchildren. Born in Burlington, VT, to the late Cyrus Metcalf and Jo-sephine Stimets, he spent his youth growing up in Vermont before moving to Binghamton and finally settling in Syracuse in 1970. Rich graduated from Middlebury High School, Class of 1943. He then served three years in the U.S. Army, partly in the European Theatre during WW II. Following his military service, he earned a bachelor's and master's degree in organic chemistry from Middlebury College. His professional career included pharmaceutical research chemist, water and waste water laboratory director in Binghamton, field chemist for New York State Department of Health and finally 18 years as training officer for Onondaga County Department of Water Environment Protection, directing the training and safety programs. Rich belonged to the New York State Water Pollution Control Association, chairing several standing committees. He was a recipient of the Milton T. Hill Award for the Advancement of Waste Water Personnel in 1982. He also belonged to the National Environmental Training Association (NETA) serving as director for six years. In 1987, he was named National Trainer of the Year. Rich chaired and co-chaired the public employer section of Onondaga County United Way Campaign for three years in the 1970s. He also chaired the Department's Red Cross blood drive for several years. Rich was a member of Tabernacle Church in Binghamton. He served on its official board and taught math to handicapped children for three years. He was an active Mason for over 50 years, holding such offices as Commander, High Priest and finally Worshipful Master of William S. Farmer Lodge in Solvay during its 50th anniversary year from 1981-1982. Rich will best be remembered as an avid trout fisherman, collector of antique fishing equipment and for his playful teasing and sense of humor. He was predeceased by his wife of 48 years, Rosemarie H. Metcalf, in 1999 and his son, Bruce A. Metcalf, in 1961. Surviving are his daughters, Emily J. Metcalf (James Oshinsky) of Baldwin and Janet I. Metcalf of Syracuse; three grandchildren: Justin R. P. Mrs. Porubek graduated from the University of Rochester, NY. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa of Rochester University. She taught math at Keuka College and in the North Syracuse school district, where she retired in 1985. She belonged to the New York State Teachers Association and was a member of C.S.E.A. She was a tax aide for seniors for the town of Cicero. Mrs. Porubek was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and was the church treasurer. She was predeceased by her husband, Stephen J. Born in Calabria, Italy, he lived most of his life in Syracuse. Steven was a self-employed restaurateur for many years before retiring in 1970. He was an avid fisher-man and hunter and a communicant of Holy Cross Church. He was predeceased by his wife, Carmella, in 2001 and his daughter, Julie A. Klink, in 1994. September 23, 2005 Curt O. Schultze, 81, of Baldwinsville, passed away Friday at home with his family by his side after a long illness. Curt was born in Richmond, NY, the son of the late Curt and Gladys Schultze. He was raised in Manchester, NY, and mar-ried his high school sweetheart, Ruth Fish, to whom he was happily married for 60 years. He worked on the Lehigh Valley Railroad for 13 years in Manchester, NY, settling in Baldwinsville in 1955, where he worked at GE's Electronics Parkway and E-Lab for 25 years. Curt retired from GE in 1980. He was preceded in death by brothers, Frank and Louis, and sister, Gladys Volpe. Wink, 79, of Syracuse, passed into heaven on September 24, 2005, at Francis House after a long and valiant battle with lymphoma. Fran was born in Newport, RI. In 1941 she lived on the island of Oahu, surviving the attack on Pearl Harbor. In 1959 Fran and her family moved to Syracuse and settled in Eastwood. Fran was a longtime communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church, active in its Golden Agers program and volunteered in many programs at the church and in the community. She worked at Daw's Drugstore and Friendly's Ice Cream before retiring from the Syracuse City School District. Fran was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who was loved by her family and will be greatly missed. Frances is survived by Clarence, her husband of 59 years; sons, Larry (Bonnie) of Bridgeport, Tom (Linda) of Minoa and CDR Jim (Jennifer) of Virginia; grandsons: Larry Jr. (Casey) of Virginia, T.J.
