Anderson, W. Sam September 24, 2005 W. Sam Anderson, 79, of Castle Rd., North Syracuse, died Saturday. A native of Ebensburg, PA, Mr. Anderson had resided in North Syracuse for the past 46 years. He was an Alum of the University of Notre Dame and received a Masters degreein Electrical Engineering from Harvard. Sam served in the US Navy aboard the USS Storm King in the Pacific Theater during WW II. He retired in 1986 after more than 25 years as an Electrical Engineer with the heavy military division of the General Electric Co. in Syracuse. Sam was a Charter member of the North Area Volunteer Ambulance Corps and a communicant St. Rose of Lima Church. He was an avid outdoorsman and he enjoyed downhill skiing, rock climbing, bicycling, boating, hiking, camping and orienteering. He was also a former Ski Instructor and member of the ski patrol at Labrador Mountain. He was predeceased by his brother, William M. Anderson in January. Sam is survived by his wife of 56 years, the former Elaine Parkin; a daughter, Barbara (Larry) Messina of Liverpool; six sons, W. Sam III (Sara) of Mattydale, David W. (Carol) of Bloomfield, James M. Ashmead, Warren L. September 24, 2005 Warren L. Ashmead, 84, of Hamilton St., Hamilton, passed away Saturday, September 24, 2005, at Community Memorial Hospital, Hamilton. Born February 6, 1921, in Jamaica, NY, he was a son of Arthur and Katherine Peterson Ashmead. He was a graduate of Jamaica High School and Colgate University, cum laude, in 1942. His post-graduate studies were interrupted by WWII in which he served with the U.S. Army Air Corps as a 1st Lieutenant. Following the war, he returned to school and earned his law degree from Harvard University in 1948. Mr. Ashmead was a practicing attorney in New York City prior to establishing his office in Hamilton in 1951. He had served as chief counsel to the New York State Ways and Means Committee for over 20 years, starting in the Nelson Rockefeller Administration. He was the chairman of the Legal Committee of the Colgate University Alumni Association for many years; the legal representative in Hamilton for the Colgate Board of Trustees; and legal counsel for Phi Delta Theta fraternity, of which he was a member. On June 6, 1943, Warren was united in marriage to Edna Knapp in Garden City, Long Island. Mr. Ashmead was a member of the First Baptist Church in Hamilton. He was a member and past president of the New York State Bar Association; member and past president of the Madison County Bar Association; member of the Board of Directors of Community Memorial Hospital, Hamilton; and was a delegate to the 6th Judicial District Convention. He received the Maroon Citation from the Colgate Alumni Assoc. in 1965. Warren had a great love for the outdoors and was a licensed Adirondack guide. He had also been a Boy Scout, proudly earning the rank of Eagle Scout. Surviving are his wife, Edna; and a daughter, Pamela V. Ashmead of Atlanta, GA. He was predeceased by a sister, Katherine Ashmead. A memorial service will be held at noon on Friday, September 30, 2005, from the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 25 Broad St., Hamilton. Buell, Susanne Henward September 25, 2005 Susanne Henward Buell passed away on September 25, 2005. Born, June 11, 1928 in Syracuse, NY. Sue was the daughter of Catherine and DeBanks M. Henward. At Syracuse University she began a lifelong commitment to volunteer service. Before graduation in 1950, she was vice president of Alpha Phi Sorority and led the Red Cross and Community Chest drives. Following graduation, she married Charles W. Buell. Sue was a member of the Junior League of Bethlehem, PA, Philadelphia, PA, Scranton, PA, and St. Louis, MO. Sue was the President of the Junior League of Scranton and, later, was the first woman President of the United Way of Scranton. Sue initiated the Lackawanna County Leadership Program and served as an officer on numerous community boards. Since moving to Naples, FL in 1988, she had been very active in The League Club and the Women's Golf Association at the Vineyards. Sue is survived by her husband, Chuck, and their three daughters, Catherine H. Buell, Los Angeles, CA, Hillary B. Stauffer (Richard) of Bridgewater, NJ, Christine W. A native of Williamstown, MA, "H" had resided in the Fulton-Scriba area most of his life. He was a successful small businessman, owning and operating Dowd's House of Flowers, Fulton, from 1972 to 1995. He previously worked in the banking industry as assistant vice president of Fulton Savings Bank, Fulton, and loan officer at Marine Midland Bank, Oswego. "H" Dowd had served as president, secretary, treasurer and various other offices in the Fulton Lions Club from 1961 to present. He was a recipient of the Lions Clubs International Melvin Jones Award for unselfish dedication to his community. He was a former 20-Y1 Zone Chairman, Youth Foreign Exchange Chairman and was well known by Lions members throughout Central New York. He helped to nurture several other Lions Clubs in the area including the Oswego Lions Club. "H" stimulated interest in the Lions youth exchange program and, with his wife Mary, hosted seven Japanese students. In ensuing years they hosted 35 students from Europe and South America through the American Intercultural Student Exchange and seven children from the Fresh Air Children's Fund, New York City. He worked closely with the Clarissa Owens Let's Give for a Kid Program at Christmas in Fulton for many years. "H" served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955. He enjoyed flower arranging and gardening. He was the son of the late Albert and Sarah Tallman Dowd and was predeceased by his sister, Carolyn Seymour. Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Mary Barclay Dowd of Fulton; two sisters, Grace Bonacorsi of Scriba and Dorothy Gallagher of Holiday, FL; several nieces and nephews. She was the widow of Dr. Robert Hummer, with whom she worked as his dental as-sistant for 39 years. She was a 1933 graduate of Cornell University, taught in a rural school for one year and was secretary of Boynton Junior High School in Ithaca, NY before moving to Syracuse. Elizabeth was an avid horsewoman all her life, training and exhibiting her own horses and ponies at area horse shows, including the New York State Fair for over 50 consecutive years. She was secretary of the American Saddlebred Horse Association of NY for 25 years and the NY State Hackney Association for several years. Surviving are a loving and devoted daughter, Katherine Constable and her husband, Bill of Troy, VA; one sister, Kerttu Bollinger of Amherst, MA; a brother, Jerome Pasto of State College, PA; and a step-daughter, Susan Benton and her husband, George of Liverpool, NY. He graduated from Syracuse University with a degree in engineering. He retired in 1978 as a research & development chemist with Church & Dwight in Solvay after 35 years. Petro, Ellen Naum September 25, 2005 Ellen Naum Petro, 96, a former resident of Syracuse and Cazenovia, died Sunday, September 25, 2005. Born in Bitusha, in what is now Macedonia, on January 18, 1909, she emigrated to the United States with her parents, as a young child and settled in Syracuse. The oldest of eight children, she remained close to her siblings her whole life. She married Paul Petro on September 27, 1927. They celebrated 65 years of marriage before his passing October 1992. They had two sons, Col. Peter Petro who predeceased her in August 1996, and William Paul Petro. She was endlessly devoted to her family, a dutiful daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt and grandmother who gave selflessly and generously to all. Ellen was an avid gardener and cook. For many years, she ran a farm stand on Kinne Street in East Syracuse. A needleworker her whole life, she took up rug hooking in her later years. She was a communicant of St. Sophia's Greek Orthodox Church and longtime member of the Macedonian Educational and Mutual Aid Society. She is survived by her son, William and his wife, Carole Smith Petro of Buffalo, New York; her daughter-in-law, Dodie Petro of Waterford, Virginia; her six grandchildren, Stephen Petro, Mark Petro, Margarethe Petro Laurenzi, Caroline Petro Gately, Alexa Petro Christopher and Nikki Petro Laughlin, and nine great-grandchildren.
