Prominent Divorce Lawyer James L. Rider, 63, a prominent Washington divorce lawyer and national authority on mediation, died April 24, 2005 at Washington Hospital Center after suffering a heart attack at the end of a seven-mile run in Rock Creek Park. Mr. Rider, a former military lawyer, ran regularly as part of his conditioning training for what would have been his third Marine Corps Marathon. A standout high school and college tennis player, he took up running in recent years after his son Michael Rider, a fashion designer, expressed interest in the annual marathon held in October. "He was addicted to sports," said Sandy Ain, a well-known Washington divorce lawyer who was a friend and occasional professional adversary of Mr. Rider's. "He was a wonderful sportsman who brought integrity, focus and calmness to his game, whether it was tennis or golf," Ain said. "He brought that same demeanor to his law practice. His hallmark was an incredible high level of integrity and solid judgment. Even his adversaries trusted his judgment." Mr. Rider was a senior partner of Margolius, Mallios & Rider, a firm he joined in 1969. Over the years, he gained a reputation among his clients and peers as an understated yet eloquent and highly discreet lawyer. He became the one to whom members of Washington's influential social, political and business circles often turned for matters of family law, particularly divorce and child custody issues. In that often acrimonious arena, Mr. Rider never lost sight of doing what he could to protect children, Ain said. "He was very caring, often fashioning settlements few other lawyers could hope to do," he said. Mr. Rider's success, experience and expertise helped make him a regular in Washingtonian magazine's list of top local divorce lawyers. In one of its profiles, the magazine described him as "confident but not blustery -- he won't offer or promise anything he can't deliver." It was his even-handedness, Ain said, that led court judges to select Mr. Rider to serve as a family law mediator. There was also a toughness about him that helped him survive an attack in Rock Creek Park in 1995, when he was stabbed several times and robbed of his bike. Mr. Rider, who lived in Washington, was a native of Newburgh, N.Y. and the son of the late Meyer Joseph "Jerry" Rider and the late Marion Friedman Rider Levin. He graduated from Lafayette College in 1963 and Fordham University law school in 1966. He then joined the Army and served as a captain in the Judge Advocate General's Corps, handling criminal cases and appellate matters while stationed in South Korea and the Pentagon. He was a member of Bethesda Country Club and an elected fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. Survivors include his wife of 28 years, Eleanor Y. Rider of Washington; son, Jordan E. Rider, of Los Angeles; son, Michael J. Rider, of New York; and a brother, David L. Rider of Newburgh. Shiva will be observed on Sunday, May 1, at 7:30 PM at the home of David and Patty Rider in Newburgh. Memorial contributions may be directed to The James L. Rider Memorial Scholarship Foundation, 5460 Nebraska Ave. NW, Washington, DC 20015 or to Temple Beth Jacob, 344 Gidney Avenue, Newburgh, New York 12550.
