She was 60. Born on February 22, 1945, to the late Charles and Charlotte Douglass Piper, she was a lifelong area resident. Merlyn graduated from Newburgh Free Academy in 1962 and was a retired civilian employee from the United States Military Academy at West Point. She married the late James W. Brown, Jr. in 1971 and was the loving mother of her three daughters Christine Olsen Weeks and her husband Tom of Lockport, NY, Stacey Brown and her partner Joseph DelaCruz of Middletown, NY and Kelly Brown at home. She was the devoted grandmother of Blake James DelaCruz. In addition to her daughters and grandson, she is survived by her brother Charles Piper, Jr. and his wife Lynda and her three sisters, Catherine Marchione and her husband Dennis, Charlotte DiPaola and her husband Paul and Diane Piper-Rader and her husband Paul. She is also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews and great nephews. Merlyn was predeceased by her sister Mary Ann Petroski. Martinisi, Jennie D. Jennie D. Martinisi, a retired florist, died Sunday July 31, 2005 at home. She was 86. The daughter of the late Gregorio Papa and Venera Calabrese, she was born March 31, 1919 in Newburgh, N.Y. She loved the operetta and Hollywood musicals of the 30's and 40's, and her talents extended to floral design. She and her beloved husband, Sam, founded and owned Foti II, a prominent florist that served many in the Greater Newburgh area. Sabatino (Sam) Martinisi predeceased her. She is survived by three daughters: Nicolina Yassaman of Monroe, Denise Walker and Venera Martinisi, both of New Windsor; one sister, Mary Martinisi of New Windsor; one grandson, Adam Walker of New Windsor; and nieces and nephews: Anthony Austria, Venera Jean Martinisi, Camille Martinisi, Gregorio Papa, Jacqueline Murray, Rosalie Rossi and Achilles Rossi. He was 69. Son of the late Jose Rodriguez and Adelina Sepulveda, and the late Angela Negron, he was born June 13, 1936 in Ponce, Puerto Rico. A family statement reads: "Reinaldo was a loving and generous father who always worked hard for his family. The warmth of his smile and presence was palpable, and his family and friends basked in it. He found deep satisfaction in his work at the Turning Point, especially with his colleagues; and as a leader in the Hispanic program. He knew how to turn a tough situation around with humor and could quickly have us all smiling at life's predicaments. Scozzari, Louis Louis Scozzari, a longtime area resident, died Monday August 1, 2005 at Orange Regional Medical Center, Horton Campus. He was 71 years old. The son of Millie Delratta and the late Peter Guarnari, Louis was born June 16, 1934 in New York City, N.Y. Louis worked as a self-employed carpenter in Brooklyn. In 1970, Louis moved to Middletown and married the former Jeannette Goldstein. Besides carpentry, Louis worked with furniture repair and refinishing. He is survived by his wife, Jeannette at home; his mother, Millie of Middletown; one son, Lewis Newmark and his wife, Susan, of Middletown; one granddaughter, Samantha Newmark of Middletown; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Garfinkel of Brooklyn, and many nieces and nephews. "Betty" Smith, a 36-year resident of Scotchtown in the Town of Wallkill, passed away July 31, 2005. She was 82. The daughter of Donald and Katherine Auger, she was born March 15, 1923 in New Rochelle, N.Y. A family statement reads: "She loved the outdoors and spent much of her time fishing, gardening and bird-watching. She truly loved her family, (including her cats and dogs), and will be greatly missed by friends and family alike." Betty graduated from New Rochelle High School in 1940, and went on to attend two years at Wheaton College in Norton, Mass. She worked at Rockland State Hospital before moving to Middletown, where she became a secretary for BOCES in Goshen, N.Y. After retiring from BOCES she worked part-time for the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation in Middletown until her retirement at age 78. Sutherland Sr., Kenneth Edward (Ken) Beloved husband of the late Jacqueline "Jackie" McDermott Sutherland, Loving father of Carey (Fletcher) Schiller, Kendall (Mark) Abramson, Jacqueline Gail (William) Markham, Jill (Philip) Gebhardt, Kenneth, Jr. "Chip" (Suzi Walsh) and John. Beloved grandfather of Jack and Kelly Markham, Madeline Abramson, Kara, Blake, and Colin Gebhardt, and twins, Kenneth III and Frances Sutherland. Ken is also survived by his brother Donald (Joan) Sutherland and his sister, Gail (Harold) Christiansen as well as numerous nieces and nephews all of whom he loved dearly. He was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret (Thompson) Sutherland and father, Clarence Sutherland. Ken was born and raised in Penn Yan, N.Y. A 1954 graduate of the Rochester (N.Y.) Business Institute, he proudly served as an Ensign on the USS Washoe County, traveling throughout Europe and the Caribbean, before being honorably discharged in 1957. On August 4, 1957 he married the former Jacqueline McDermott in Buffalo, N.Y. and settled in Newburgh where the two began their 48-year journey together. In 1958, Ken became a father for the first time, an experience he would duplicate five more times over the next ten years. In 1972 a work promotion brought Ken, his wife and their six children to Walnut Creek, Calif. where he lived out his life. Ken retired after more than 40 years in the field of loss prevention working with insurance carriers and brokers, before completing his career as a safety consultant to the construction industry. His extensive travels took him to all 50 states but his most memorable trip was taking his beloved wife Jackie to Scotland, their ancestral homeland. Ken's primary focus was his family and he took great joy in being their leader. He proudly celebrated all six of his children's college graduations and was a tremendous supporter of all of their activities, volunteering in many capacities which often included coaching their various sports teams. He served on the Board of Directors of the Mustang Soccer League and as President of the San Ramon Valley Little League from 1981-1984. As President, he was instrumental in the development and building of the Major League field at Los Cerros School, which was completed in 1982 and has since been enjoyed by thousands of area kids. In 1989, he was inducted into the SRVLL Hall of Fame. For the last six years, he tirelessly cared for and supported Jackie during her battle with the cancer that would eventually take her life. Shortly after her death, he died peacefully after his own courageous battle with pulmonary fibrosis. Wood, a lifelong Sullivan County resident, passed away on Tuesday August 2, 2005 at Orange County Medical Center, Horton Campus in Middletown, NY. She was 82. The daughter of William and Unice Bullock Bonnell she was born on August 21, 1922 in Liberty, NY. Viola was retired from Liberty Central School where she worked in the cafeteria. After her retirement, she drove bus for Sullivan County Transportation System. She was a member of Liberty Methodist Church and was an avid bingo player. A family statement reads "Viola will be remembered for her home cooking and her many cookbooks and her avid bingo play. She was always willing to help others. Viola was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Clarence "Woody" Wood who died on May 13, 2003 and by a daughter, Alinda Pope. Visitation will be held on Thursday August 4, 2005 at Ramsay's Funeral Home 275 S. Main St. Liberty from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. Funeral services will be on Friday August 5, 2005 at Ramsay's Funeral Home at 11 AM with Rev. Kenneth Rodgers officiating. Burial will be with her husband in Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery, Liberty, NY. Memorial contributions may be made to Loch Sheldrake Fire Dept. or to the Liberty United Methodist Church.
