Bliss, a 24-year resident of Niagara Falls, N.Y., and former longtime resident of Harriman, died Saturday July 30, 2005 at Northgate Healthcare Center in Niagara Falls, N.Y. She was 87. The daughter of the late Michael Pleskan and Sophie Zinchuck Pleskan, she was born November 1, 1917 in Dixon City, Pa. Mrs. Bliss was a retired Licensed Practical Nurse at Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, N.Y. The widow of Joseph Bliss, she is survived by her daughters, Carol L. Decker and her husband, John, of Niagara Falls, N.Y., Barbara Rocchio of Lords Valley, Pa., and Patricia Maraffino and her husband, Nicholas, of Highland Falls; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Brown, Merlyn Elizabeth (Piper) On August 1, 2005, after a courageous battle with cancer, Merlyn Elizabeth (Piper) Brown passed away at home surrounded by her family. She was 60. Born on February 22, 1945, to the late Charles and Charlotte Douglass Piper, she was a lifelong area resident. Merlyn graduated from Newburgh Free Academy in 1962 and was a retired civilian employee from the United States Military Academy at West Point. She married the late James W. Brown, Jr. in 1971 and was the loving mother of her three daughters Christine Olsen Weeks and her husband Tom of Lockport, NY, Stacey Brown and her partner Joseph DelaCruz of Middletown, NY and Kelly Brown at home. She was the devoted grandmother of Blake James DelaCruz. In addition to her daughters and grandson, she is survived by her brother Charles Piper, Jr. and his wife Lynda and her three sisters, Catherine Marchione and her husband Dennis, Charlotte DiPaola and her husband Paul and Diane Piper-Rader and her husband Paul. She is also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews and great nephews. Merlyn was predeceased by her sister Mary Ann Petroski. He was 77. The son of the late Asa Frank Butler and Minnie Labagh Butler he was born December 8, 1927 in Chester, New York. He served in the United States Navy in World War II, where he received Five Medals of Service and Good Conduct. He also was a member of the National Rifle Association. Family Statement: Frank was an easy going guy, who was always there to lend a hand to anyone in need. He will be greatly missed by all that new him, family and friends, and Lucky his dog. Survivors include his brother Roland Butler and his wife of New Jersey, his sister Fern Smith of Monroe, and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews. The son of Quintin George Ettell and Helen Barnett Ettell, Edward was born on October 31, 1928 in Ridgefield Park, N.J. He was a Veteran of World War II when he proudly served his country in the United States Navy aboard the USS Princeton CV 37. He received the World War II Victory Medal and was Honorably Discharged in 1946. Edward was a member of the V.F.W. and is a past president of the Temple Hill Muzzle Loaders Club. He was also a member of the N.R.A. Survivors include his loving wife, Marjorie Tremper Ettell, his son, Wayne Ettell and his wife Pattie of Plattekill, his daughter Dianne Powers and her husband Daniel of Wallkill, and his daughter Barbara Ambrose and her husband, Jeffery of Wallkill, his five grandchildren, who he loved very dearly, Daniel Powers, Jacqueline Ambrose, Ian Powers, Katelyn Ambrose, and Allyson Powers, his sisters Helen Holmes of Fla., Shirley Felter of Calif., Edna Minutolo of Pa., Glendy Knapp of Wallkill, Patricia Mason of Nev., and Penny Kniffen of N.C. as well as several nieces and nephews. Ford Sr., Frank Arthur Mr. Frank Arthur Ford, Sr. of Otisville, entered into his final rest on Wednesday August 3, 2005 at Bon Secours Community Hospital, Port Jervis. He was 48. He was born December 23, 1956 in Port Jervis, N.Y., the son of the late Richard Pierson and the late Viola Conklin Ford. He was raised in Hainsville, N.J. and Huguenot, N.Y. Frank worked as a plumber for Smith Plumbing & Heating in Port Jervis. He was a member of the North American Fishing Club. A family statement reads: "Frank was an outdoorsman who loved to camp out and go fishing. He was a beloved friend who would help out whenever and however he could. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, nephew and cousin. Who will be missed by all who loved him." Surviving are his devoted and loving wife, Lorie Weiss Ford at home; two sons, Frank A. Herbison, David James Formerly of Cornwall, N.Y. David James Herbison, 53, lost his courageous battle with cancer on July 31, 2005 in Denver, Colo. Dave was born July 25, 1952 in Cornwall, N.Y. David was a Boy Scout, varsity athlete and graduate of Cornwall Central High, class of 1970. He was appointed to the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., where he continued to be active in U.S.M.A. varsity athletics. Dave graduated with an engineering degree in 1974. An Army Ranger, he served in Korea with the 2nd Infantry Division. Upon leaving active duty, he served in the Army Reserves and the Colorado National Guard, retiring as a Major in 2004. His civilian career included 19 years with Storage Tek Corporation and two years with Quantum. In reflection, a close friend said, "Dave lived his life exemplifying West Point's motto of Duty, Honor, Country. His final fight revealed the depth of his character, courage and dignity. He will be sorely missed by those he touched." He was predeceased by his father, James D. Herbison. Survivors include his mother, Marie (Hoffman) Herbison; his loving partner, Diane Pearson of Littleton, Colo.; daughters, Heather and Megan; son, Matthew; daughter-in-law, Laura; grandchildren, Derek and Tyler; and sisters, Diane Martinez and Nora Ann Reilly; and aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Born on May 27, 1925 in Jersey City, N.J., he was the son of Victor and Hedwig Mackiewicz. He was married to the late Genevieve Mackiewicz (nee Piotrowicz). He was a Navy Veteran of World War II. Mr. Mackiewicz worked in the freezer department of Wakefern Food Corp. in Elizabeth, N.J. He was a member of Teamsters Local 863 in Newark, and formerly owned Tap-A-Keg Tavern in Jersey City. He was a parishioner of St. Thomas the Apostle R.C. Church in Oak Ridge. Survivors include his son, Stanislaus Mackiewicz of Gaithersburg, Md., daughters, Christine Wahlgren of Oak Ridge, Regina Dailey of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Loretta Latoraca of Franklin, N.Y. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Christopher, Nicholas, Gene and Gabriel. Markiewicz, 84, most recently of Oneonta and formerly of Worcester, passed away on Monday August 1, 2005 at the AO Fox Memorial Hospital. She was born August 18, 1920 in Newark, N.J., the daughter of Thomas and Catherine (Higgins) Cahill. She married Edward K. Markiewicz Sr. on November 20, 1943, and he predeceased her on November 21, 1993. A homemaker, Mary was a member of St. Mary's Church, and was a former communicant of St. Theresa's Chapel in Davenport Center. While living in Worcester, she was active in the Worcester Wheeler's square dance group. She also enjoyed working with ceramics. She is survived by her children: Edward (Christine) Markiewicz Jr. of Port Jervis; Thomas (Susan) Markiewicz of Goshen; James Markiewicz of San Diego, Calif.; Joan (Ronald) Necoechea of North Chili; Ellen (Ronald) Malecot of Highland Falls; and Mary Wendling of Oneonta; 12 grandchildren; a sister, Teresa Cahill of Oneonta; as well as five nieces and nephews. He married Joyce Ann Giammarco Nenni on April 29, 1962 in Sacred Heart Church, Newburgh, who survives at home. James was the owner of Mr. James Beauty Salon in Highland Falls and J&J Klean in Newburgh. He later worked as a salesman at Hudson Auto and Industrial Fastener in Newburgh. He proudly served in the U.S. Air Force from 1959 to 1962. He was a charter member of the Town of Newburgh Volunteer Ambulance Corp., a life member of the Black Rock Fish & Game Club, a member of the Disabled American Veterans, and a former member of the Town of Newburgh Republican Committee. A family statement reads: "Reinaldo was a loving and generous father who always worked hard for his family. The warmth of his smile and presence was palpable, and his family and friends basked in it. He found deep satisfaction in his work at the Turning Point, especially with his colleagues; and as a leader in the Hispanic program. He knew how to turn a tough situation around with humor and could quickly have us all smiling at life's predicaments. As his children remind us, their dad's comment set this occasion of his passing is, "The beat goes on." We acknowledge him and miss him every day." Church in Port Jervis; was a member of Hawks Nest Hunting Club; member of Delaware Engine Co. #2; Port Jervis Fire Department; the Port Jervis Lodge of Elks #645 B.P.O.E.; the Port Jervis Lodge of Masons #328 F & AM; the Royal Arch Masons; and was one of the original founders of Jaycees in Port Jervis. He was also a member of the Delaware Commandry #44; Knights Templar; a member of the Kalurah Temple AANOMS; and member of Board of Salvation Army in Port Jervis. He was 45. Son of William and Alice Russell Ware, he was born April 4, 1960 in Newburgh, N.Y. Ronald worked with Carrier Transportation Corporation in Fishkill, N.Y. Survivors include his loving parents at home; his brother, Garland Ware and his wife, Edith, of Warwick; his sister, Pamela Louis of New Windsor; his two nieces, Marissa and Monica; and his nephew, Justin. Ronald was predeceased by his loving grandparents, Solomon and Mamie Ware, and Howard and Lucy Russell. Visitation will be held from 12:00 to 2:00 PM on Friday, August 5 at Best Temple Church of God in Christ, 111 South St., Newburgh. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 PM with the Rev. "Peg" Margaret W. "Peg" Wilson, a retired guidance counselor for the Syracuse School System in Syracuse, N.Y., and 15-year resident of the area, died Wednesday August 3, 2005 at home. She was 67. Daughter of the late William Wonderly and Judy Card, she was born March 30, 1938 in Kingston, N.Y. She graduated with a Masters Degree. She is survived by her sister, Susan Wonderly of Rhode Island; a niece, Linde Hotchkiss and nephew, Jason Hotchkiss, both of California; and cousins: Emmy Johnson of New York and Whitney and Luke Johnson of New York. Calling hours will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 PM on Friday August 5, 2005 at the Copeland Funeral Home, Inc., 162 South Putt Corners Rd., New Paltz, N.Y.
