Ralph L. Albano, a retired Lieutenant for the N.Y.P.D. and former Police Chief for the Washingtonville Police Department, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on Tuesday August 2, 2005 in Calvary Hospital in the Bronx. He was 76 years old. The son of the late Fred and Vincenza Caputo Albano, Ralph was born May 19, 1929 in Chicago, Ill. A veteran of the Korean War, Ralph proudly served his country in the United States Army. Ralph received a Business Administration Degree for St. John' s University, and started his career in law enforcement in 1953 with the N.Y.P.D. In 1979 he was promoted to lieutenant and later retired in 1981, with 28 years of service to the N.Y.P.D. A man that would not stay retired, Ralph in 1982, took the job of Police Chief for the Washingtonville Police Department and later retired in 1984 to the State of Florida, where he became a Federal Marshal. He later moved to Duluth, Ga. and in 2000 opened Big Daddy's Pizzeria, while still handling the responsibilities of being a Federal Marshal. A family statement reads: "Our father and grandfather will always be remembered as a loving, patient, kind, and understanding man, who was our mentor. Ralph was a courageous and dignified leader and a friend to all." Ralph is survived by one son, John Albano of Buford, Ga.; two daughters, Rita Plotkin and her husband, Daniel, of Middletown, and Jean Albano of Duluth, Ga.; four grandchildren: Beth, Sarena, Shayna, and David Plotkin; two sisters, Mary Delcore and her husband, Pat, of Brooklyn, and Phyllis Roberts of Duluth, Ga.; as well as several nieces, nephews and friends. Bernhardt, Robert Clyde "Poppy" Robert Clyde "Poppy" Bernhardt, a lifetime resident of Sullivan County, died Wednesday August 3, 2005 at his home in Youngsville. "Bob" was well known throughout the area, working 36 years for the New York State Electric and Gas Company. An avid outdoorsman, Bob loved the woods and developed a reputation for his White Tailed Deer and Turkey hunting expertise. The son of Fred and Sylvia Ruff Bernhardt, Bob was born on July 25, 1925 and lived his early years in Kenoza Lake, N.Y. Bob was predeceased by two sisters, Hilda and Marjorie; and by two brothers, Bernard and Irving. After serving a military commitment in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Bob returned to Sullivan County. Bob experienced his life defining moment when he married Regina Menges. Bob and Jean married on Columbus Day, October 12, 1947, and spent 56 years together until Jean passed away in November 2003. Deeply devoted to his "Jeannie," family meant everything to Bob. Survivors include two daughters, Gloria Bryan and her husband Lee of Hancock, N.Y. and Rosemary Fanning and her husband Philip of Youngsville, N.Y. Bob leaves four sons, Robert Bernhardt, Jr. of Youngsville, John Bernhardt and his wife Jo, of Margaretville, N.Y., Ron Bernhardt and his wife Cindy of Youngsville, and Timothy Bernhardt of Youngsville. Bob is further survived by twelve grandchildren: Jody, Mike, and Amber Bryan, Beth, Jon, and Kaitlyn Fanning, Derik, Jenna, Jordan, Jesse, Ross, and Erin Bernhardt. Bob also leaves one great-grandchild, Lexy Walter. Bob was a fifty-eight year member of the Youngsville Fire Department, was a member of the Hill Hunting Club, and a parishioner of St. Francis Church in Youngsville. The daughter of Clyde and Viola Zenininger Wood, she was born June 20, 1951 in Afton, N.Y. She was a clerk at Ultra Power in Liberty. She was the widow of Ronald Coy, who died in 1989. Ettell, Edward H. Edward H. Ettell, the self-employed owner of Edward Ettell Plumbing and Heating, died Wednesday, August 3, 2005 at home. He was 76. The son of Quintin George Ettell and Helen Barnett Ettell, Edward was born on October 31, 1928 in Ridgefield Park, N.J. He was a Veteran of World War II when he proudly served his country in the United States Navy aboard the USS Princeton CV 37. He received the World War II Victory Medal and was Honorably Discharged in 1946. Edward was a member of the V.F.W. and is a past president of the Temple Hill Muzzle Loaders Club. He was also a member of the N.R.A. Survivors include his loving wife, Marjorie Tremper Ettell, his son, Wayne Ettell and his wife Pattie of Plattekill, his daughter Dianne Powers and her husband Daniel of Wallkill, and his daughter Barbara Ambrose and her husband, Jeffery of Wallkill, his five grandchildren, who he loved very dearly, Daniel Powers, Jacqueline Ambrose, Ian Powers, Katelyn Ambrose, and Allyson Powers, his sisters Helen Holmes of Fla., Shirley Felter of Calif., Edna Minutolo of Pa., Glendy Knapp of Wallkill, Patricia Mason of Nev., and Penny Kniffen of N.C. as well as several nieces and nephews. He was 29. The son of Eleanor Amitrano Brady and the late Alan Greenfield, he was born August 23, 1975 in Middletown, N.Y. Published in the Times Herald-Record on 8/5/2005. Herbison, David James Formerly of Cornwall, N.Y. David James Herbison, 53, lost his courageous battle with cancer on July 31, 2005 in Denver, Colo. Dave was born July 25, 1952 in Cornwall, N.Y. David was a Boy Scout, varsity athlete and graduate of Cornwall Central High, class of 1970. He was appointed to the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., where he continued to be active in U.S.M.A. varsity athletics. Dave graduated with an engineering degree in 1974. An Army Ranger, he served in Korea with the 2nd Infantry Division. Upon leaving active duty, he served in the Army Reserves and the Colorado National Guard, retiring as a Major in 2004. His civilian career included 19 years with Storage Tek Corporation and two years with Quantum. In reflection, a close friend said, "Dave lived his life exemplifying West Point's motto of Duty, Honor, Country. His final fight revealed the depth of his character, courage and dignity. He will be sorely missed by those he touched." He was predeceased by his father, James D. Herbison. Survivors include his mother, Marie (Hoffman) Herbison; his loving partner, Diane Pearson of Littleton, Colo.; daughters, Heather and Megan; son, Matthew; daughter-in-law, Laura; grandchildren, Derek and Tyler; and sisters, Diane Martinez and Nora Ann Reilly; and aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Muratore, Sr., a longtime area resident, passed away Wednesday, August 3, 2005 at Orange Regional Medical Center, Horton Campus. He was 81 years old. The son of Thomas and Vita Certa Muratore, he was born January 3, 1924 in Brooklyn, NY. A decorated World War II veteran and a retired member of the New York City Police, he rose through the ranks to become a detective sergeant. His distinguished service in World War II earned him the Bronze Star, the Conspicuous Service Cross, the Combat Medical Badge, the Good Conduct Medal, the American Service Medal, the Asiatic Service Medal, the Philippines Liberation Ribbon, and the World War II Victory Medal. An active contributor to the Orange County Educational and the Middletown communities, Mr. Muratore served on the board of the Human Rights Commission and as a member of the Ethics Board, City of Middletown; he was co-founder and first President of the Orange-Putnam County Mediation Project and served as a consultant with the U.S. Justice Department to improve police relations and race relations in the cities of Middletown and Newburgh. Over the years, he was honored for his voluntary service. He received the Senior Citizen of the Year finalist recognition and the United Court System of the State of New York recognition for dedicated service. A family statement reads: "We will always remember our Dad as a loving and dedicated man who devoted his life to us." Anthony is survived by his wife of 49 years, Marie Adamo Muratore; son, Anthony Muratore of Middletown; two daughters, Elaina M. He married Joyce Ann Giammarco Nenni on April 29, 1962 in Sacred Heart Church, Newburgh, who survives at home. James was the owner of Mr. James Beauty Salon in Highland Falls and J&J Klean in Newburgh. He later worked as a salesman at Hudson Auto and Industrial Fastener in Newburgh. He proudly served in the U.S. Air Force from 1959 to 1962. He was a charter member of the Town of Newburgh Volunteer Ambulance Corp., a life member of the Black Rock Fish & Game Club, a member of the Disabled American Veterans, and a former member of the Town of Newburgh Republican Committee. He was 69. Son of the late Jose Rodriguez and Adelina Sepulveda, and the late Angela Negron, he was born June 13, 1936 in Ponce, Puerto Rico. A family statement reads: "Reinaldo was a loving and generous father who always worked hard for his family. The warmth of his smile and presence was palpable, and his family and friends basked in it. He found deep satisfaction in his work at the Turning Point, especially with his colleagues; and as a leader in the Hispanic program. He knew how to turn a tough situation around with humor and could quickly have us all smiling at life's predicaments. As his children remind us, their dad's comment set this occasion of his passing is, "The beat goes on." We acknowledge him and miss him every day." On July 27, 2005, Anthony Umina, Jr. passed on to God, peacefully and in his home, at the age of 92. Born in Middletown, on July 13, 1913 to Anthony and Mary Umina, Sr., he was employed by the state of New York as a Supervisor with the department of corrections in Otisville, N.Y. Upon retirement, he moved to the state of Florida, enjoying his life there for the next 33 yeras. "Tony" was recently predeceased by his wife of 71 years, Frances. His parents, his five sisters: Mary Fascella, Kathryn Brigante, Susan Fernandez, Josephine Wilhelm, Adeline Uliana and their husbands, his brothers: Mahlan Umina and Chief Petty Officer Benson Umina and his wife, and his nephew Paul Fascella also passed away before him. He leaves behind his daughter, Lorraine Haskin and her husband, Robert, his grandson, Robert Anthony, his wife Donna and great-granddaughter Alyssa, his granddaughter Kelly Tenenini and her husband Richard. Of the nine children of Anthony and Mary Umina Sr., one remains. Tony's brother, Thomas Umina and his wife Julie, of Middletown, survive him as well as nine nieces and nephews. He was cremated as he wished and will be interred in his family plot at St. Joseph's R.C. Church of Middletown. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Naval Station and resident of the area since 1921, died Thursday August 4, 2005 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale, Pa. She was 98. She was born April 29, 1907 in Bristol, R.I., the daughter of the late Raffaele and the late Antonietta Sansone Proto. She was married to the late Harold F. Williams; who died January 14, 1969. She was a member of St. Joseph's R.C. Church, Matamoras, Pa. Surviving are two step-sons, Thomas Somarelli and his wife, Viola of Huguenot, and Frank Somarelli and his wife, Viola, of Huguenot; a step-daughter, Delores Egner of Daytona, Fla., and also several nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the Gary-Parker Funeral Home, 100 East Main St., Port Jervis on Friday August 5, 2005 from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 6 with prayers at 9:15 AM in the funeral home followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM in St. Joseph's R.C. Church with the Rev. August A. Ricciardi officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery, Port Jervis, N.Y. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph's Church, 307 Ave. F, Matamoras, PA 18336.
