Published in the Times Herald-Record from 8/23/2005 - 8/24/2005. Kellman, Edward J. Central Valley, N.Y. Although Edward J. Kellman, 82, was known by those new to the area as their Town Justice, when he died on August 20, many others knew him as educator, civic leader, Town of Woodbury Parks Commissioner, World War II veteran, and the title he was most proud of "coach." Judge Kellman was born on January 10, 1923, in Yonkers, NY. He was a graduate of the Riverdale Preparatory School, Bronx, NY. At the outbreak of World War II, he enlisted in the Navy. He served in both the Pacific & Atlantic campaigns and eventually participated in the invasion of Normandy. After the war, he graduated from the State University at Cortland, and later earned a Masters Degree from Columbia University in New York City. In 1949, he joined the faculty at the Union Free School, Central Valley, NY as Coach of All Sports. In 1952, the school centralized with others in the area to form Monroe-Woodbury Central High School. Coach Kellman served as Athletic Director of Monroe-Woodbury, where he led a number of his football, basketball, and baseball teams to championships in the fifties and early sixties. Many of his "boys" went on to distinguish themselves at colleges and universities around the nation. He mentored both male and female students, athletes and non-athletes alike. He is credited with inspiring and assisting many students on to college educations. Besides coaching football, basketball, and directing an intramural program second to none, he made time to aid students in the classroom and assist in the town recreation programs. During his 29 years of devoted service to the school district and its students, he saw it go from tiny Central Valley High to one of the largest and finest academic institutions in the state. Upon Coach Kellman's retirement, one successful former student wrote 'Monroe-Woodbury is at a loss with the retirement of Ed Kellman, people like him kept marginal students like me in school." Even after retiring from teaching in 1978, he maintained his love of sports and the young by officiating in high school and college athletics. He became much in demand as an athletic official. As the Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association (OCIAA) Athletic Coordinator, he was honored for the many "unselfish and dedicated years he served the schools and athletes." It was written at the time that the "true value of his contributions will never be accurately measured. He gave unselfishly his time and dedication for over 23 years to teach, inspire, and lead youngsters for their futures and the betterment of the community." In 1971, Mr. Kellman was elected Town Justice of the Town of Woodbury, NY, where he served for the past 34 years. Again, he did what he loved doing most, serving his friends, neighbors, community and country. Judge Kellman performed well over 400 weddings and administered justice fairly and compassionately. He was a member and former president of Orange County Magistrates Association. Although he was "retired" some may say he worked equally as hard, if not harder in community service. In later years, he exerted a major influence on the quality and scope of the county park system's planning and development. His vision and dedication were major factors in gaining public and elected support for this enviable park system. His exemplary character, keen wit and understanding touched the hearts and minds of all who were privileged to come in contact with him. He was a former member of the Woodbury Planning Board, former chairman of Woodbury Parks & Recreation Committee & former member of Orange County Parks Commission. A long-time member of the Central Valley Golf Club, Ed could be found there several days a week working towards a single digit handicap with his buddies. He was a member of the Woodbury Community Association. He is survived by his loving wife Jean of Central Valley, NY, daughters Susan Maxwell & her husband, Larry, of Davidsonville, Maryland, and Lisa Holton and her husband, Scott of Chester, NY, as well as an extended family of former students, colleagues, and friends. He truly enjoyed life and the people he came in contact with on a daily basis. His presence will be deeply missed by his family, close friends, and acquaintances. He once said that "he was thankful to live in a community where he had a chance to serve and be a contributing citizen and that the people made every moment a new and wonderful experience." Friends may call on Friday, August 26, 2005 at Smith, Seaman & Quackenbush, Inc. Funeral Home, 117 Maple Avenue, Monroe from 2-4 & 7-9 PM. A celebration of Ed's life will be held on Sunday, September 11, 2005 at 10 AM at Earl Reservoir, Highland Mills, NY. The family invites all to join them. Donations may be made to the Edward J. Kellman Scholarship Fund; c/o Ron Montalto, M-W Board of Education Building, Route 32, Central Valley, NY 10917. Funeral arrangements by Smith, Seaman & Quackenbush, Inc. Funeral Home.
