She was 85 years old. Mrs. Abate was born on August 14, 1919 in Sloatsburg, to Antonio and Filomena Sorice. She was raised in Italy and came back to Sloatsburg in 1923 when she was 14 years old. Mary married Andrew Abate in 1940 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Tuxedo, N.Y. She was employed as a seamstress at Rainbow Todd in Suffern for 25 years. She was a member of I.L.G.W.U. (garment workers' union) and she is still a parishioner of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. Mary is survived by her beloved husband of 65 years, Andrew, of Sloatsburg; her two loving children, Carmella (Cookie) Rutella of Sloatsburg, and Andrew and his wife, Silvia, of Connecticut; her dear brothers and sisters: Josephine Caruso and Frank and his wife, Antoinette Sorice, and Anna and Joseph Cantoli, of Middletown; Joseph Sorice and Angelina Vacchiano and her husband, Salvatore, of Sloatsburg; Rose and John Basanno of Goshen, Sam and Nina Sorice of Suffern, and Carmella Tondo of Ramsey; sisters-in-law, Rose Parker and Frances Sorice; her cherished grandchildren: Joseph Rutella, Andrea Diaz, AnneMarie Rutella, and Adam and Steven Abate; and her great-grandsons, Evan Soden and Nathan Diaz. Alexis, a 36-year corrections officer for the New York City Dept. of Corrections, retiring in 1991 from Fishkill Correctional Facility and lifelong area resident, died February 6, 2005 in St. Francis Hospital, Poughkeepsie, after injuries sustained from a car accident. He was 72. The son Joseph Alexis and Helen Utter, he was born March 8, 1932 in New York, N.Y. He married Mary Matthews on May 7, 1957. She passed away September 4, 2001. Robert served in the Navy from 1951-1954 and was of the Roman Catholic faith. Survivors include his sons, William and Richard Alexis and James Maloney; daughter, Linda Sayers; grandchildren, Deborah Wilson, Kathryn McCullouch, Daniel Alexis, Keith Ferris, Michael and Robert Maloney; and great-grandchildren, Joseph Sayers and Zachary and Megan. DeGroat, Jonah "Bop" Jonah "Bop" DeGroat, of Middletown, a retired truck driver and lifelong resident of the area, passed away on Sunday, February 6, 2005 at Orange Regional Medical Center, Horton Campus. He was 80. The son of the late Hanford and Frances Garrison DeGroat Sr., he was born on June 20, 1924 in Sussex, N.J. A veteran, Mr. DeGroat served in the US Army during WW II. A family statement reads, "He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather and was loved by everyone who came in contact with him. He will be sadly missed." He leaves behind his wife, Irene DeGroat at home; his daughter, Joan McElhaney and her companion, Wayne Brown of Middletown; his grandchildren, Traig McElhaney and Jay McElhaney; sisters, Ida Smith, Frances Smart and her husband William "Duke" Smart and Doris Thompson all of Middletown; many nieces and nephews; great-grandchildren; great-great granddaughter; and many friends. Fitzgibbons, a longtime area resident, died Wednesday, February 2, 2005 at his home. He was 62 years old. The son of the late Mary Fitzgibbons, he was born on January 3, 1943 in Bayridge, N.Y. Thomas was a manager of stock transfer for Bank One and formerly Morgan Guarantee, in New York, N.Y. Thomas is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Patricia Rohan Fitzgibbons at home; his family of cats, "the guys and gals"; two sisters, Susan Reed and her husband, John, of Staten Island, Maureen Becker of Staten Island; one sister-in-law, Patricia Fitzgibbons of New Jersey; and several nieces and nephews. Hodge, a retired carpenter of Livingston Manor, died peacefully at home with his family at his side on Tuesday February 8, 2005. He was 83. He was the son of Harold and Mildred Owen Hodge. He was born May 10, 1921 in Grooville. Mr. Hodge was retired from the Concord Hotel. He was a member of Carpenters Local 19 for 48 years, and a member of the Hoos Truck Company for over 50 years. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his duties that did not require him to go forward of the battalion aid station. With complete disregard of his own safety, and while exposed to enemy fire, he moved to the front of the infantry column and evacuated a severely wounded man to the rear, where treatment was given and undoubtedly saved the man's life. Law, Gordon F. Gordon F. Law, 86, of New Brunswick, N.J. and Northport, N.Y., died Saturday February 5, 2005, at the Francis E. Parker Memorial Home in New Brunswick. Dr. Law was born in Landour, India on August 30, 1918, the son of the late Myrtle (Ducret) Law and Henry Gordon Law. Following his graduation from Cornwall High School, Cornwall, N.Y. in 1935, he attended the State Technical Institute at Delhi in Delhi, N.Y., majoring in building construction. During World War II he served in the Army Air Corps with the 8th Air Force as a first lieutenant navigator and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and four Air Medals. Dr. Law received two degrees from Rutgers University; a B.S. in Social Studies in 1948 and his Ed.M. in Supervision and Administration in 1953 from the Graduate School of Education. He earned his doctorate in Vocational Education Administration in 1966 from New York University. Dr. Law spent six years as District Director of Vocational and Practical Arts Education with the Huntington, N.Y. public school system, followed by four years as the first director of the Lewis A. Wilson Technological Center in Dix Hills, N.Y. In 1966 he became director of research and professor of Vocational-Education at SUNY Oswego. In 1968 he was appointed Associate Professor in the Department of Vocational-Technical Education in the Graduate School of Education at Rutgers University. He remained at Rutgers until his retirement in 1988. Dr. Law was a former president of the New York State Association of Vocational Education Administrators and a former coadjutant staff member for ten years with SUNY in Oswego and New York University. His wife of 57 years, Margaret (Moore) Law, died September 29, 2004. Surviving are three sons: Gordon F. Law, Jr., Michael Law of Greenville, and John Law; one daughter, Margaret C. Law; six granddaughters: Joy Blackin, Alexa Law, Michelle Law, Megan Law, Katherine Law, and Rebecca Law; three grandsons: Brendan Callahan, Sean Callahan, and Peter Knudsen; three great-grandchildren: Julia and Daniel Blackin and Joshua Law; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Love, Talbot Alexander "Tally" Talbot "Tally" Alexander Love, 73, a longtime resident of Tuxedo Park, died January 23, 2005, at Roosevelt Hospital in New York City, of complications from a rare blood disease, De Novo Myelodysplastic Syndrome. Mr. Love was born on May 15, 1931, in Brooklyn Heights, N.Y., to Richard Brooks Love and Allegra Uehlinger Love. He grew up on his grandfather's farm in Goshen amidst a loving family of cousins, aunts, uncles, brothers and sisters. His family had many connections to Tuxedo Park and Mr. Love attended numerous Autumn Balls at the Tuxedo Club. Mr. Love attended Kent School in Kent, Conn. and graduated from Yale University in 1953, where he was a member of the Fence Club. He spent four years in R.O.T.C. and became a First Lieutenant in the United States Air Force, serving two years of active duty at Lockbourne Air Force Base in Columbus, Ohio, as Public Information Officer. In the mid-fifties he moved to Tuxedo Park and began working for his family's paint business, Egan & Hausman Co., in Long Island City. In 1956 he married Barbara Babcock and they moved to Tuxedo Park. In 1967, Mr. Love and his brother, Neil, opened The Playhouse-on-the-Hudson, a dinner theater in Cornwall, which ran for four years. In 1975, Mr. Love began his 22 year career with Benjamin Moore & Co. as an architectural consultant in Manhattan. He lectured, even through retirement, on paint technology, at seven New York City design schools. He was president of Construction Specifications Institute for two years. He toured the country lecturing for American Society of Interior Designers for several years as well, and was recognized as an excellent speaker. Tally loved classic cars. A neighbor observed, "(Mr. Love) had too many cars and not enough time...which he never lamented." At one point he owned an English AC Aceca, a forerunner of the Shelby Cobra racing car that he kept in his garage along with many other cars in various states of repair. He loved sailing and vacationing every summer in Kennebunkport, Maine. He enjoyed entertaining, to be the host. A friend commented, "He always had a smile on his face." Another said, "He had a positive attitude towards people and life in general...truly a kind man." In Tuxedo, Mr. Love was a member of and an usher at St. Mary's-in-Tuxedo Church. He was also President of the Tuxedo Historical Society, for which he wrote the book, "From Dawn to Dusk". He was in the process of researching another book on Tuxedo's architectural history. A brother, Richard Brooks Love, Jr., and a sister, Barbara Ann Bartlett, predeceased him. Mr. Love is survived by his wife, Maureen, of Tuxedo Park; his former wife, Barbara Claypool, mother of Andrea and Elisabeth; his sister, Allegra Elizabeth Page, of Arroyo Grandee, Calif.; his brother, Cornelius Ruxton Love, III, of Stevensville, Md.; his daughters: Andrea Love Johnson of Jeffersonville, N.Y., Elisabeth Love Goot of Scarsdale, N.Y. and Victoria Alexis Love of New York, N.Y.; and his son, Talbot Alexander Love, Jr. of Tuxedo Park; as well as three grandchildren and a huge network of beloved family members. McPhillips, a Middletown resident and former ward clerk for Horton Hospital, died Wednesday, February 9, 2005 in Delaware Valley Hospital in Walton, N.Y. surrounded by her family. She was 91 years old. The daughter of the late Charles W. and Mabel Roosa Moore, Barbara was born on March 11, 1913 in Walton. She moved with her family to Middletown in 1917 at the age of four and she married Richard McPhillips in 1933. Barbara was a lifetime member of First Presbyterian Church of Middletown and the Elizabeth Scott Kirkwood Guild. She was involved in the Family Life Group of Middletown, her bridge club for 70 years, the Wednesday Afternoon Bowling League, and a longtime member of the Academy Avenue P.T.A. in Middletown. She was employed as a ward clerk for O.R.M.C., Horton Campus until her retirement and for the last two years spent her time divided between her hometown of Walton and Middletown, always with her family. Barbara was a gentle and loving mother, not only to her own family, but to all the young people who enjoyed her home and hospitality. Barbara is survived by three daughters, Nancy McPhillips-Greene of Walton, N.Y., Barbara McPhillips-Roggeman and her husband Paul of Middletown and Susan McPhillips-Christiano and her husband Jim of Middletown; one daughter-in-law, Mary M. McPhillips of Middletown; 19 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Barbara was predeceased by her son R. Barry McPhillips, and her brother, Max Moore. Pancurak, Mary Catherine Mrs. Mary Catherine Pancurak, of Port Jervis, N.Y., a 5-year resident of Port Jervis, died Wednesday, February 9, 2005 at Morristown Memorial Hospital, Morristown, N.J. She was 91. She was born May 12, 1913 in Yonkers, N.Y., the daughter of the late Stephen and the late Katherine Karczynska Wanko. She was a member of St. Mary's R.C. Church, Port Jervis. Surviving are her husband Paul P. Pancurak at home; son Randolph Karpinski of Sparrowbush, N.Y.; daughter Lorraine Larsen of Sandefjord, Norway; three grandsons Joseph Karpinski of So. Centerville, N.Y., Robert Karpinski W. Henrietta, N.Y., Michael Karpinski of Patchoque, N.Y.; and five great-grandchildren. Peterkin, Geraldine Amelia Hull Geraldine Amelia Hull Peterkin, a longtime resident of Newburgh, died Monday February 7, 2005, at home in Tequesta, Fla. She was 92. The daughter of Isabelle and Silas Todd Hull, she was born August 22, 1912 in Newton, N.J. She was the widow of Roger O. Peterkin Sr. Geraldine was a longtime member of the Garden Club and Ossoli Club of Newburgh. She was educated in Newton, New Jersey schools and studied nursing at St. Luke's Hospital in New York City and in St. Michael's Hospital in Newark. She returned to school in the 1970's to complete her certificate as a Licensed Practical Nurse and then worked for a number of years at Mount Saint Mary's Infirmary. Geraldine, known as Gerry to her friends and Gram to her family and most of their friends, traces her ancestry to the Reverend Joseph Hull of Massachusetts in 1635, one of the original pilgrims. She was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She leaves behind four grandchildren with the most profound memories of caring and love, and a group of great-grandchildren who had the fortune of truly knowing and spending time with their great-grandmother for their entire lives. She will live in all of their hearts forever. Survivors include her son, Roger O. Peterkin Jr., and his wife, Geralyn, of Falmouth, Mass. and Tequesta, Fla., and her four grandchildren: Roger O. Peterkin III and his wife, Susan, of Wellesley, Mass., Leslie Peterkin Crill and her husband, Michael, of Monroe, N.Y., Mark Peterkin and his companion, Brenda Kendrick, of Centerville, Mass., and Kimberly Peterkin Brisky and her husband, Richard, of Hobe Sound, Fla.; her 10 great-grandchildren: Sara, Colin, Andrew, Roger, Chelsea, Allison, Kenneth, Trevor, Tyler, and Emily. Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 PM on Friday, February 11 and 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM on Saturday, February 12, at the Brooks-DiDonato Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave., Newburgh. Rider, Calvin "Pop" Calvin "Pop" Rider of Accord, N.Y., died Tuesday February 8, 2005, at Benedictine Hospital. He was 68. Calvin was born on June 4, 1936 in Kingston, N.Y., the son of Calvin H. and Carolyn (Osterhoudt) Rider. Mr. Rider was a veteran of the United States Army, a lifetime member of the NRA and an avid sportsman. He worked as a custodian at Ulster County Community College and for the Parks Department at Mohonk Mountain House prior to his retirement. Calvin is survived by his mother, Carolyn, of Accord; his former wife and the loving mother of their children, Francine Herrmann, of Rosendale, N.Y., their children: Cal Rider of Rosendale, William Rider of Roanoke, Va., Daniel Rider of Highland, N.Y., James Rider of Half Moon, N.Y., and Lynette Marinello of Palm Harbor, Fla.; his brothers, Norman and George, of Accord; his sister, Carolyn McCombs, of Laguna Beach, Fla.; 14 grandchildren and 11 nieces and nephews. Sholes, "Vicki", a sales associate with the United States Postal Service and lifetime resident of the area, died Wednesday February 9, 2005, at the Orange Regional Medical Center, Horton Campus, Middletown. She was 50. The daughter of Paul Wilk and Lucy Uszenski Wilk, she was born June 5, 1954 in Warwick, N.Y. A member of the Church of the Infant Saviour in Pine Bush, she was a Eucharist Minister and Lector at the church. She was a member and officer in the Pine Bush Lion's Club and an officer in the Pine Bush Aquatic Club. Vicki was a 1972 graduate of the Warwick Valley High School. She is survived by her loving father, Paul, of Pine Island; her beloved husband, Bob, at home; loving sons, Paul, at home, and Brian and his wife, Kristine, of Montgomery; loving daughter, Brenda Zappolo and her husband, Steven, of New Windsor; beloved grandson, Christopher Zappolo of New Windsor; loving sisters, Susan Wilk of Pine Island, and Paulette Rudy and her husband, Jim, of Pine Island; and one brother-in-law, Tom Martin of Longmont, Colo., and his children, Tara and Connor.
