He graduated from New York University with a degree in Business Administration in 1940. Daniel served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a First Lieutenant in the 101st Regiment, 26th infantry division under General Patton's 3rd army. Wounded, he was awarded a Purple Heart. He retired as a Captain. He was a member of Ukrainian Youth Chorus of N.Y. and N.J., financial secretary. He actively led a Ukrainian Folk Dance group in Elizabeth, which performed at the New York World's Fair in 1939 and 1940. He was a member of a 500 member chorus, who sang under Alexander Koshetz, at the 1940 World's Fair. He was elected president of the Ukrainian Youth League of North America after World War II, which began the Ukrainian Arts book. Daniel worked in the UNA office for four years and conducted the search for a resort and senior retirement home for UNA members on the East Coast. Slobodian had been assigned by UNA's president, Dmytro Halychyn, to convert Soyuzivka from a sanitarium to a resort and oversaw Soyuzivka's grand opening in July, 1952. As the community around Soyuzivka grew, Slobodian remained active, helping to establish local branches of the largest organizations such as the Ukrainian Congress Committee. He always introduced political candidates to the Ukrainian community, and often wrote speeches for them to deliver in the N.Y. State Capital and at Ukrainian-related events. In his almost 50 years in Kerhonkson, not a week went by that Dan Slobodian wasn't visited by a local Ukrainian, needing help in translating something, seeking advice on how to get a local permit, or asking his assistance on a community project.
