Friedell, Edgar A. Mr. Edgar A. 'Mr. Ed' Friedell of Matamoras, PA, a retired Matamoras Elementary School Custodian and 36 year resident of the area, died Friday, January 14, 2005 at Bon Secours Community Hospital. He was 88. He was born August 20, 1916, in Queens Village, NY, the youngest son of the late Abram A. and the late Selma M. Mueller Friedell. Born prematurely, Edgar recalled being told, he was placed on the woodpile next to the stove while his mother recovered. Hours later he cried for attention. Throughout his early life he was the caregiver for his parents and the caretaker of the family property, seeing his parents and one brother buried in Lutheran Cemetery in Middle Village, NY before pursuing his own life. Ed then married Jennie from Matamoras and lived on Long Island. The two had beautiful homes, decorated gracefully by Jennie and gardened artistically by Ed. The two traveled extensively throughout the Midwest and Canada, planning on retiring to New Port Richie in Florida. His wife, Jennie E. Shay Friedell, feeling illness coming on, begged to return here, and the two then settled in the home on Avenue L of Matamoras. Mr. Ed then took a job he would remember with great delight, as custodian in the local grade school. Jennie died April 9, 1975. For the remaining thirty years of his life, Mr. Ed lived in the home, relying heavily on good neighbors, especially the Hissam family, formerly of Matamoras, to help him through hard times. Traveling around town with a giant stuffed polar bear in the back seat and chatting with whoever would listen gave him some relief from the loneliness and incentive to eat healthy and remain independent until his death. Though he had no children of his own, he often cared for and entertained his nieces, Elaine and Valerie, giving them memorable toys and trips to the carousel or the skating rink. Having a wonderful sense of fun and imagination, he found the perfect teddy bear for each child, even for his grand-nieces, Marta and Amy. Giving was a great part of his life. Mr. Ed enjoyed entertaining others with stories, both true and embellished, hoping that the listener would laugh or ask more questions and go on with the conversation. He loved telling about the Algonquin princess of Long Island natives who was an ancestor, and he reminisced about strange and peculiar people to whom he delivered mail in Queens and Wantaugh, Long Island. Surviving are two nieces: Valerie Knickrehm of Goshen, IN and Elaine Hill of Cullman, AL; grandnieces & grandnephews: Marta, Amy, James, Laura, Elaine & David.
