Born on February 27, 1913 in Brooklyn to the late Samuel & Fannie Smolowitz Glasstein, Shirley was a member of Temple Beth Jacob in Newburgh for many years, the first and past president of the Winona Lake Fire Company Ladies' Auxiliary, the Town of Newburgh Golden Age Club and the past president of Resident Council at Montgomery Nursing Home. Survivors include her loving daughter, Rhoda, and her husband, Daniel Torelli, of Newburgh; loving sister, Rita Romanick; cherished grandchildren: Linda and her husband, Patrick Valicenti, and Daniel and his wife, Danielle Torelli; loving great-grandchildren: Kaitlyn and Jennifer Valicenti, and Daniel and Mary Torelli; and also several loving nieces and nephews. Carlton of Matamoras, Pa., a retired insurance broker and 12 year resident of the area, died Wednesday January 19, 2005, at Milford Senior Care & Rehabilitation Center in Milford, Pa. She was 82. She was born November 3, 1922 in Chicago, Ill., the daughter of the late Lester and the late Pearl Thompson Anderson. Surviving her is her son, Edmund E. Contarino, of Newburgh, a retired custodian with the Newburgh City School District, entered into rest Thursday January 20, 2005, at Cornwall Hospital. He was 90. Son of the late Alfio and Conchetta DeMarco Contarino, he was born July 29, 1914 in Newburgh. He married Mary Reitano on September 12, 1937 in Sacred Heart Church, Newburgh, who survives at home. Joe was a parishioner of Sacred Heart Church, Newburgh, and a member of Club 60 in Newburgh. In addition to his wife Mary, Joe is survived by his son, Joseph Contarino, of California; his daughter, Conchetta "Connie" Contarino, of Newburgh; his brother, John, and his wife, Mary, of Virginia; his sister, Mary Nucifore and her husband, Joseph, of New Windsor; his sister-in-law, Mary Contarino, of New Windsor; three grandchildren: Christopher and Timothy Contarino, and Frederick Kuhner; three great-grandchildren: Anthony and Kyle Contarino, and Jazmine Kuhner; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Fruchtman, Anna Anna Fruchtman, a retired hotel matron, and homemaker, died at Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris on January 22, 2005. She was 78. Anna was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on July 18, 1926, the daughter of George and Augusta Walker Wurm. She is survived by her sons: Jack, Martin and Lee Fruchtman; her daughters: Phyllis Maybloom, Carol Kinnie, Susan Fruchtman, Audrey Ackerman and Brenda Fruchtman; her three sisters: Dottie Sammrick, Helen DeSalvo and Teresa Pereria; and 28 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Kessel, a resident of the Town of Newburgh, passed away Friday night, January 21, at the Fishkill Health Center. She was 87 years of age. The daughter of the late Hermon H. Bullock and Mildred E. Burdick, Vivian was born at their Walden home on December 23, 1917. Mrs. Kessel was a dedicated member of the Moulton Memorial Baptist Church for seventy-five years. She was a member of the Beta Eta women's class, serving as secretary for several years. In addition, she assisted with Sunday School and Vacation Bible School events, playing piano and filling in whenever needed. Mrs. Kessel also volunteered her time delivering for Meals-On-Wheels and contributed to several Christian and Missionary Organizations. A 1934 graduate of Newburgh Free Academy, Vivian began her musical career at the age of fourteen. While attending NFA, she accompanied several musical organizations and served as church organist in several area churches, among them St. John's, the historic Dutch Reformed Church, the Meadow Hill Dutch Reformed Church and Moulton Memorial Baptist Church. She retired from the later position at the age of seventy-five. Mrs. Kessel attended Lycoming College in PA and had the opportunity to attend a summer piano institute at the Julliard School of Music in NYC. Mrs Kessel also shared her gift of music with many area students providing private music instruction from her home and serving as accompanist at the Avis Adams Lawton Voice Studio on Fullerton Ave. Vivian Bullock married George D. Kessel on April 23, 1939, at the Moulton Memorial Baptist Church. George had a beautiful tenor voice and it might be said "they made beautiful music together." When their daughter, Marilyn arrived in 1947, the duet expanded to a trio and the family spent many musical hours at home, on road trips, with their extended families and at their church. Mrs. Kessel is survived by her daughter Marilyn and son-in-law Thomas Scott, of the Town of Newburgh, her grandson Todd Scott and his wife Kristin and her great-granddaughter Melena of Saratoga Springs, NY, sister-in-law Edith Sambells and her husband Ed of New Windsor and brother-in-law Edmund Simpson and his wife Elaine of the Town of Newburgh. Surviving nieces and nephew and their extended families include, Mrs. William (Lilian) Rogers of New Windsor, Mrs. Edward (Carlene) Schueler of Wytheville, VA, Betty Rossetter of the Town of Newburgh, Ruth Simpson of New London, CT, Paul Simpson and his wife Debbie of Branden, FL, and Mrs. Edward (Merilee) Timberger of the Town of Newburgh. She was a librarian at Monmouth University before working as a Civil Service Library Technician at Ft. Monmouth, and part-time librarian at West Long Branch Public Library. She retired from Ft. Monmouth in 1995 and continued at the West Long Branch Public Library, retiring in 2003. She was a Long Branch High School Graduate, a communicant and member of the Altar Rosary Society, of St. Jerome Roman Catholic Church, West Long Branch. She was a member and past Recording Secretary of the Ft. Monmouth Military Retiree Council; Member of the Army Community Services Volunteer; Military Widows Support Group; Member of Ft. Monmouth Officers Wives Club; Member of Monmouth County Library Association; and a Volunteer at the Ft. Monmouth Library. Born in Poughkeepsie, NY, she had lived in Long Branch, Oceanport, and West Long Branch. She was predeceased by her husband, Louis Kurzejewski in 1980. Mance, Kenneth Palmer Kenneth Palmer Mance, of Ellenville, a lifelong resident, and a retired assistant postmaster for the Ellenville Post Office, died January 23, 2005 in Orange Regional Medical Center, Horton Campus. He was 87. The son of George Willard and Anna Marie Rippert Mance, he was born May 29, 1917 in Ellenville. He was the widower of Adele Sheeley Mance. He was a member of The Christ Lutheran Church, Ellenville, the VFW, and the Philatelic Society. He served in the United States Army during WW II. Survivors include his son, Kenneth Palmer Mance Jr. of Tampa, Fla.; his daughter, Penelope Mance Pratt of Ellenville; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Mildred Mazziotto, a resident of the Town of Poughkeepsie for 13 years, and former longtime resident of Highland, died January 22, 2005, at home. She was 98. A member of St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church, she was born January 16, 1907 in New York City, to Nicola Vertullo and Mary Stabala Vertullo. She married Rocco Mazziotto at the St. James Church, Milton, in 1925. Rocco Mazziotto predeceased her January 4, 1997. She is survived by two daughters: Julia Pezzollo and her husband, Peter, of Long Island, and Marie Matera and her husband, Vincent, of New York City; one son, Nicholas Mazziotto and his fianc‚e, Helen Cushen, of Poughkeepsie; one sister, Frances Nicola of West Park, N.Y.; two grandchildren: Eugene Pezzollo and his wife, Joni, and Rosemarie Matera; four great-grandchildren: William Pezzollo, Ryan Pezzollo, James Pezzollo and Brent Shalin; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Roosa, 95, of Rt. 209, died Sunday, January 23, 2005 at the Kingston Hospital. A lifelong resident, he was born in Stone Ridge on December 18, 1909, a son of the late William D. and Alice Judkins Roosa. Prior to his retirement, he was the Superintendent of Fairview Cemetery in Stone Ridge for many years. He was a life-member of the Marbletown Reformed Church and was a charter member of the Stone Ridge Fire Company and a member of the Marbletown Senior Citizens. He was a US Army veteran of WW II, where he served in the European Theatre of Operations and was a member of the Marbletown American Legion Post # 1512 of Stone Ridge. He was predeceased by four brothers, Lester J., W. Stanley, Elmer H. and Robert V. Roosa. Surviving are a sister, Evelyn Civil of Stone Ridge and several nieces and nephews. Siegel, Isabel Isabel Siegel, the widow of Alan Siegel and beloved mother to her three children: Richard Siegel, Lawrence Siegel and Andrea Rose, passed in her sleep January 21, 2005. She was 69 years old. In addition to her immediate family, she leaves behind a son-in-law, William, and daughter-in-law, Debra, as well as four loving granddaughters: Alyssa, Cindy, Rachel and Abby. A family statement reads: "Isabel bravely fought through several illnesses, including a stroke and a heart attack, before succumbing to an aneurysm. She will be sadly missed by family and friends in New York, California and in her native Scotland. She left Scotland while still a teenager and came to America with her older sister, Mary. They were the last wave of great European immigrants seeking a better life for her self and her children. For the courage it took to make that move alone, we will forever be in her debt. "Frank" Stueber Sr., a retired laborer with Local 17, Newburgh, former laborer with the Maybrook Railroad and lifetime area resident, died Saturday, January 22, 2005 at home with his family by his side. He was 97. The son of Frank Stueber and Mary Trainor Stueber, he was born January 16, 1908 in New York City. Frank was a longtime parishioner of the Church of the Infant Saviour in Pine Bush, former usher of the church and former member of the Holy Name Society of the church; charter member of the Pine Bush Knights of Columbus Council #5329; an exempt member of the Pine Bush Fire Dept.; and past president of the Town of Crawford Democratic Club. A family statement reads, "Frank was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. We will miss him greatly."
