Helen G. Carayas, a retired commercial real estate associate with Equitable Life Assurance in New York City, died Thursday, July 21, 2005 at her home in Wurtsboro following a long illness. She was 88. The daughter of the late Egnatz Essman & Helen Serediak Essman, she was born September 10, 1916 in the Bronx. Following retirement, she and her husband moved from the Bronx to Wurtsboro. Until emphysema limited her activities, she was an active volunteer with Horton Memorial Hospital, the Nutrition Council of the Sullivan Co. Office for the Aging and the American Legion Post #1266 Auxiliary. Mrs. Carayas was also a member of the Mamakating Senior Citizens and was named the 1991 Mamakating Senior of the Year. Together with her husband, she was a member of the Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church in Middletown. She was loved by all. She is survived by her loving husband of 56 wonderful years: Stephen; a son: Steve & his wife Noreen; a daughter: Catherine; two grandchildren: Paul & Christopher; and several nieces & nephews. Caren, Ann Louise Ann Louise Caren, a homemaker, seven-year resident of Kelso, died July 19, 2005 at Hospice Care Center in Longview, Wash., with her husband of 47 years at her side. She was 66. The daughter of Eugene and Marion (Motland) Lavarello, she was born January 5, 1939 in Cornwall, N.Y. She graduated from Newburgh Free Academy in Newburgh in 1957 and married Edward Caren of Monroe, N.Y. on June 22, 1958. Together, they raised three sons. She was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church in Longview, Wash. Embler, Lawrence "Doc" Lawrence "Doc" Embler, a retired from Dupont Stauffer and Newburgh School System, entered into rest July 21, 2005 at home. He was 80. The son of the late Wilfred and Jennie Sarvis Embler, he was born December 17, 1924 in Newburgh. He was the widower of Corinne Stevens Embler. He served in the US Navy and was a WW II Veteran and a member of New Windsor American Legion. A family statement reads, "Doc enjoyed bowling, golf and softball." Hathaway, a retired electronics technician for IBM Corp. in Poughkeepsie, and longtime area resident, died Friday, July 22, 2005 at home. He was 62. The son of the late A. Lloyd and Margaret Hotchkiss Hathaway, he was born August 2, 1942 in Downsville, N.Y. John was an avid musician, playing for several area bands including Country Cousins, Starlighters, Slurp Deluxe and Country Express. He also served as a Cub Master for the Plattekill Cub Scouts Troop. John was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was 68. The son of the late John and Ida Mae Jones Jewis, he was born August 18, 1936 in Middletown, N.Y. A Veteran, Mr. Jewis served in the US Marine Corps during the Korean War. Born in Goshen, N.Y. on November 28, 1921, she was the daughter of Robert and Mable Bab Behrent. She was the widow of Reuben Bus Lewis. She retired from the meat department at Lloyds Shopping Center, Middletown and was a member of the Ridgebury Presbyterian Church. She is survived by her son Dick Lewis and his wife Luci of Walton; three daughters Nancy L. Meres, Kathleen Sontag and her husband Duane of Walton, Diane C.
