Luzzi, SDB, died Monday night, July 25, 2005, at Horton Hospital in Middletown, N.Y. He had been a member of the Salesians of Don Bosco for almost 68 years, and a priest for more tan 56 years. Father Luzzi was born in Sassano (Salerno) Italy on December 8, 1916. From his earliest years he was attracted to religious activities and expressed the desire to become a priest. After overcoming his father's objections, he entered the Salesian Missionary Institute in Gaeta to do his high school studies (1933-37). Those four years were "the most beautiful of my life," he later recalled, years of "intense studies, deep piety, happiness and a good amount of Salesian spirit." Upon graduation, Anthony and his companions were posted as missionaries to Asia, Africa or Latin America. He and two others were sent to Cuenco, Ecuador, to make their novitiate (1937-38). This was a new and frightening experience: "We felt lost. We did not know their language or customs. It was another world to us." But they acclimated as members of Don Bosco's world-wide family: "We felt at home in the company and love of so many new confreres." As Brother Anthony, he completed his college studies in Cuenca before going to a Salesian parish in the isolated, heavily forested mission territory of eastern Ecuador, among the Jivaro-Shuar tribes, from 1942 to 1945. "What an experience!" he wrote. On pastoral visits, "we used to travel for days and days through mud and rain with a caravan of about ten people." Brother Anthony began his theological studies in Quito, Ecuador, but in 1948 transferred to the United States and completed his studies at the Salesian Theological College in Aptos, Calif. He was ordained with seven confreres in Watsonville, Calif. on June 29, 1949. Father Luzzi spent the rest of his life as a member of the Salesians' New Rochelle, N.Y., Province, primarily in schools and parishes in New York and New Jersey. He became a proud American citizen in 1955, as well as a Knight of Columbus. He began his priestly life as a teacher at St. Michael School in Goshen, N.Y. (1949), while improving his English. He taught math and foreign languages at Salesian High School, New Rochelle (1950-53); was principal at Goshen (1953-56); and was treasurer of Don Bosco Technical High School, Paterson (1956-57); Mary Help of Christians School, Tampa (1957-59); Don Bosco Prep High School, Ramsey (1959-76); and St. Dominic Savio High School, East Boston (1976-77). At Ramsey, he had a large hand in the building of DeSales Hall, providing badly needed classrooms and administrative space and a spacious theater. During three years as assistant pastor at Corpus Christi Parish in Port Chester (1977-80), Father Luzzi was heavily involved in pro-life activity. In 1980, he was appointed pastor of St. Anthony Parish, Paterson, serving there until 1989. His fluency in both Italian and Spanish proved very beneficial to his mostly immigrant congregation. He completed his parochial ministry with six years at Mary Help of Christians Parish in Manhattan (1989-95), caring especially for the hundreds of Spanish-speaking parishioners. Following heart surgery, Father Luzzi moved, at age 78, to the Marian Shrine at Haverstraw-Stony Point in 1995. He offered his priestly ministry to the pilgrims at the shrine and also did chaplaincy work at Helen Hayes Hospital until his health no longer allowed such activity. He spent the last two years of his life at St. Theresa's Nursing Home in Middletown, looking back on a lifetime of joyful priestly ministry, deeply grateful to God for His blessings, and to Mary, the Mother of God, for her help. Father James Heuser, the Salesian provincial, said of Father Luzzi, "He was an extremely zealous and apostolic Salesian, much beloved by his Salesian brothers, the young, and all the people he served." Father Luzzi is survived by two brothers, Giovanni and Michele, of Caracas, Venezuela; a brother, Enzo of Livorno, Italy; a nephew, Joseph; and a niece, Cecilia, of Middletown; and several other nephews and nieces in the U.S. and elsewhere; and by a cousin, John Luzzi of Oak Forest, Ill. Five sisters predeceased him. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Higgins Funeral Home of Stony Point. Father Luzzi's body will be received at the Marian Shrine Chapel on Friday, July 29 at 2:00 PM. He will be waked from 2:00 to 5:00 PM and 7:00 to 9:00 PM. There will be a prayer vigil at 8:00 PM. Viewing will resume on Saturday, July 30 from 9:00 AM until the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM. Burial will be in the Salesian Cemetery in Goshen, N.Y.
